THE FUTURE OF PERSONALISED CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE IN E-COMMERCE: DECODING THE POWER OF AI IN BUILDING TRUST, ENHANCING CONVENIENCE, AND ELEVATING SERVICE QUALITY FOR MALAYSIAN CONSUMERS
This study examines the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on personalizing customer experiences on Shopee, a major e-commerce platform in Malaysia. Recognizing the increasing role of AI in enhancing trust, convenience, and service quality, this research aims to investigate these factors’ effects on personalised customer experience. The study employed a cross-sectional survey with a sample of 384 Shopee users, analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). Results reveal that trust in AI, convenience, and service quality all significantly contribute to customer satisfaction and personalised experiences. Trust fosters confidence in AI-driven features, convenience enhances customer ease and interaction efficiency, and high service quality positively impacts the perceived value of AI personalisation. These findings highlight the practical implications of AI for e-commerce, underscoring the need for secure, efficient, and high-quality AI implementations. Future research should explore the longitudinal impacts of AI-driven personalisation across different platforms and cultural contexts to better understand long-term customer loyalty and satisfaction. THE LENDER OF LAST RESORT: UNDERSTANDING THE DEBT DEPENDENCY OF HAGONOY RICE FARMERS ON LOAN SHARKS FOR CAPITALIZATION
In the agricultural sector, rice farmers face financial distress due to volatile market conditions and high operational costs, leading them to borrow from high-interest sources like loan sharks frequently. This study aimed to explore the pivotal moment that led to their dependence on loan sharks, their struggles, and coping mechanisms and to attain a thorough understanding of their lived experiences. This study used a phenomenological approach to assess the perceptions and experiences of an individual. The 12 participants are selected using snowball sampling and undergo an in-depth individual interview. Moreover, the thematic analysis was utilized to identify participant similarities and differences. This study determines that rice farmers in Hagonoy, Davao del Sur, have financial difficulties due to the lack of cash, prompting them to resort to loan sharks for unsecured loans since they are easy to access, emphasizing their financial exclusion. The rice farmers face high interest rates, financial struggles, debt burdens, constant debt cycles, dependency, limited options, emotional stress, and uncertainty. Gradually, they established coping techniques based on resilience and hard work, persistence and determination, financial management and planning, and community and government support. Hence, this study implies that the government may establish accessible financing organizations with obtainable terms to support farmers while also ensuring the transparent distribution of financial assistance, fair pricing, and fostering of agriculture's role in economic development.JEL: Q14, Q15, D14, G51, G23, O17 Article visualizations
The exposure of children to different types of violence in the family environment has harmful consequences for their development. It is essential to analyze the consequences of interparental violence on children who are exposed to it. The objective of this study, initially, is to analyze the life stories of adolescents exposed to interparental violence, as well as the characteristics of the domestic violence to which they were exposed, more specifically, the participants, the context, types, and their frequency. Secondly, we intend to analyze the reactions of these adolescents to this violence, such as emotional, behavioral, attribution of blame, coping strategies, consequences, and future perspectives. We opted for the qualitative methodology, the case study, with multiple cases (three), using the semi-structured interview as the evaluation instrument. The sample is non-probabilistic and by convenience, consisting of three adolescents aged between 13 and 15 exposed to domestic violence between their parents. In the present study, the direct victims are women, and there appears to be a tendency for adolescents to intervene in attacks to defend their mothers. The space where the attacks occur is domestic, and the violence is continuous over time. We found that adolescents exposed to domestic violence between their parents are deeply affected on a psychological level but also other levels, such as social or academic. They show a negative impact, very similar to that of directly victimized children, as we can see not only through the emotional and behavioral consequences but also through the fears, insecurity, anxiety, self-responsibility, and coping strategies used. THE POLITICS OF RESPECTABILITY AND CULTURE
Studying a phenomenon that has been used to defend social and economic injustices, this abstract looks at the politics of respectability and culture. In order to uphold dominant ideas and silence marginalized voices, respectability politics asserts that some attitudes, behaviors, and lifestyles are morally better to others. This abstract examines respectability via a critical lens, showing how it creates shame and guilt, suppresses disadvantaged voices, and upholds societal structures. The abstract posits that the politics of respectability serve as a social control mechanism to uphold power imbalances and enforce prevailing norms, drawing on feminist, critical race, and queer theories. Our goal should be to create a society that is more equal and inclusive by opposing and subverting respectability politics. Article visualizations
TEACHER’S VIEWS ON THE RELEVANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL ENGLISH CURRICULUM: IMPLICATIONS FOR POLICY, PRACTICE AND THEORY
The English curriculum in schools in Kenya is prepared by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD). This institute mainly relies on input from curriculum experts at the national level, denying classroom teachers the opportunity to express their views in developing a quality education system for its learners. This results in misinterpretations of curriculum intentions consequently impacting on learner achievement in annual English national examinations. The curriculum in use for teaching English in Kenya was last reviewed in 2002. Given the educational changes that have taken place over the years, the curriculum may have become obsolete. The purpose of this study was to assess teachers’ views on the relevance of the English curriculum. The study was guided by three objectives: establish relevance objectives of the English curriculum, determine the relevance of the content of the English curriculum and determine the relevance of suggested resources of the English curriculum. This study was carried out among teachers of English in secondary schools using a descriptive research design. A sample of 180 teachers of English was used. The study used a questionnaire with Likert-type questions as the main instrument for data collection. Qualitative data analysis established that the objectives on reading and listening and speaking skills, content on reading and writing skills, and nine of the suggested resources scored low means when compared to the composite mean. This was an indication that the objectives, content and suggested resources of the English curriculum had discrepancies which ought to be addressed in order to align and make the curriculum relevant to the current needs of learners. EFFECT OF FOREIGN DEBT ON LITERACY RATE IN KENYA
This paper investigated the effect of foreign debt on literacy rate in Kenya. In the fiscal year 2021/2022, public debt as a percentage of gross domestic product was 67 per cent, which was higher than the debt ceiling of 55 per cent of gross domestic product. External debt accounted for 52% of this total debt as of 2022, exhibiting a consistent increase since 2013, surpassing domestic debt. The burden of servicing foreign debt may subsequently pose a challenge to the government in fulfilling its commitments in the education sector. Consequently, lower literacy rates impede a nation's socio-economic progress as literacy is critical for promoting peace and adopting new technologies, both of which drive development. This study used the primary school completion rate as a proxy for literacy. Secondary data published in international and national organizations from 1990 to 2021 was employed for analysis. The study’s theoretical framework was pegged on a consumer utility maximization of a merit-good education constrained by the government's financing. The relevant time series and diagnostic tests were performed on the data series and models. Auto Regressive Distributed Lag model was used for estimation using ordinary least squares. The findings were that foreign debt hurt literacy rate in the long run and had a positive effect in the short run. The study recommends prudent management of foreign debt, so that it can facilitate improvements in the education sector.JEL: I25; H63; O55; C22 Article visualizations
AN ASSESSMENT OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE INTERNAL AUDIT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SIERRA LEONE
Internal auditing is crucial for evaluating and improving internal control processes within government entities. Its primary objective is to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of internal controls, risk management, and governance processes. By identifying weaknesses and suggesting improvements, internal auditors contribute to better resource utilization and accountability. Internal audits can be conducted at various levels within the government, including central agencies, ministries, departments, or individual entities. This allows for a comprehensive examination of different aspects of government operations. Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) are independent governmental bodies responsible for conducting external audits of public sector entities. They assess the effectiveness and efficiency of financial management, compliance with laws and regulations, and the overall stewardship of public resources. While internal auditors focus on assessing internal controls and ensuring the reliability of financial information, SAIs provide an external perspective on the quality and impact of internal auditing within government entities. This collaboration helps promote good governance, transparency, and accountability in the use of public resources. A robust control system, which includes internal control, risk management, and audit functions, is essential for good governance. It helps safeguard public funds and maintain public trust. Adopting a risk-based approach to integrity and implementing targeted controls can enhance efficiency and effectiveness in resource utilization. Collaboration with citizens, the media, and non-governmental organizations further strengthens the functioning of the control system. This engagement enhances transparency and accountability and ensures that the government is responsive to the needs and concerns of the public. Internal and external auditing by SAIs are vital components of the public financial management system. They work together to assess and improve government operations, enhance accountability, and ensure the efficient use of public resources, ultimately contributing to good governance. In Sierra Leone, SAIs is likened to Audit Service Sierra Leone (ASSL). The concurrent triangulation approach is a specific mixed methods model used in this study. The research findings reveal that the internal audit department of the University of Sierra Leone is not adequately resourced to perform its functions effectively. However, segregation of duties and access to information is maintained but requires a functional audit committee, an increased number of competent auditors, and auditing software.JEL: H83, M42, H11, H72, H76, K42, O17 Article visualizations
CREDIT CREATION BY COMMERCIAL BANKS AND ECONOMIC GROWTH IN SIERRA LEONE (1992-2022) AN AUTOREGRESSIVE DISTRIBUTED LAG TECHNIQUE
The study examined the nexus between credit creation and economic growth by commercial banks in Sierra Leone's for the period 1992 to 2022. Specifically, it focused on the influence of commercial bank lending on private sector growth and development. Variables such as interest rate, real exchange rate and inflation are used as independent variables. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was the chosen metric to represent economic growth, serving as the dependent variable. To ensure uniformity in data analysis, all variables were logged. The study employed the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) technique as the primary analytical model. The findings of the regression analysis revealed a direct and positive impact of commercial bank lending on Sierra Leone's economic growth. However, it is noteworthy that the study identified inflation and interest rates as factors exerting negative effects on economic growth.JEL: E44, E51, G21, O16, O40 Article visualizations
