IMPACT OF FOREIGN AID ON ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND POVERTY ALLEVIATION IN SIERRA LEONE
In capital-scarce low-income economies, the lack of attractiveness to private foreign investment implies that the only readily available source of external financing for economic development must come from foreign aid, which normally comes with an altruistic motive. However, despite the long history of aid-giving to low-income countries, especially in West Africa, evidence of donor aid effectiveness and assistance is debatable, particularly with the dominance of cross-country studies in such inquiry. With no existing country study for Sierra Leone, a typical donor aid-dependent country, this research investigates the relationship between donor intervention of the World Bank and IMF in their aid disbursement and the development outcomes of economic growth and poverty reduction in Sierra Leone. In conducting the inquiry, the study proposed three objectives. The first examines the relationship between aid and economic development. The second objective investigates the relationship between aid and poverty reduction, considering two variants of poverty reduction: improvement of pro-poor growth and aggregate human welfare. The final objective assesses the effect of domestic politics on aid’s effectiveness in improving human welfare. Arising from a pluralistic analytical framework involving triangulation of econometric estimation approaches complemented with qualitative inquiry. The study finds that World Bank and IMF aid to Sierra Leone is significant in promoting economic growth in the country. In terms of the impact on poverty, the results show that World Bank and IMF aid to Sierra Leone has significantly improved long-run pro-poor growth in the country, but this impact could not be confirmed in the short run. Concerning the other strand of poverty, the study finds that though World Bank and IMF aid may not have improved human well-being in Africa, it is found to significantly enhance human development in Sierra Leone, though the evidence could not support its reduction of infant mortality rate as a second the indicator of human well-being. Finally, for the investigation of the link between World Bank and IMF aid, politics, and human development in Sierra Leone, the study finds that though aid from these two major donors in Sierra Leone is significant in directly improving human development in the country, yet pro- democratic politics (as against autocratic regimes) can also be a good policy option for aid‘s impact on human development in the country. STATE MANAGEMENT INSTITUTIONS ON MARINE RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT OF SOME COUNTRIES: EXPERIENCE FOR VIETNAM
The state management institution for marine and island resources and environment plays a very important role. It guides, regulates, and protects marine and island resources. This state management institution aims to protect national interests, ensure sustainable economic development activities, and protect the environment and national security. The objective of the study is to find experiences in building state management institutions for marine and island resources and the environment of some countries in the world, including Japan, Korea, China, Philippines, and Australia. The study analyzed the management models, organizational structures, policies, and legal tools that these countries use to sustainably manage marine resources. The study proposed a model for Vietnam. It emphasized the importance of building an effective marine management institution, the need for coordination between state agencies, and the participation of the community and businesses. In addition, the article also recommends that Vietnam needs to improve the legal and policy framework, strengthen the management capacity of state agencies, and promote international cooperation in this field. E-GOVERNANCE IN REVENUE COLLECTION AND CUSTOMS ADMINISTRATION IN SIERRA LEONE – A SURVEY
The willingness of taxpayers to comply with their obligations depends to a large extent upon the perception that the funds collected are put to good use. It also depends on how easy and convenient it is for the taxpayer to comply. Hence getting taxpayers to voluntarily pay their correct taxes at the right time is the dream of every government. The four key research objectives are: to find out whether the implementation of ICT will improve the performance of public enterprises; to investigate whether there is a link between the tax filing system and revenue collection; to determine the significance of tax compliance and performance of the National Revenue Authority (NRA) and to examine the relationship between tax administration and revenue collection. Data was collected through questionnaires from selected tax administrators and taxpayers in Freetown and two provincial locations, Bo and Makeni, using convenience sampling. Descriptive statistical analysis techniques were employed for data analysis. Findings from the study revealed that a vast majority of the respondents believe that the implementation of ICT results in better performance of public enterprises; and that there is a link between the tax filing system and revenue collection which allows refunds to be deposited directly into taxpayers' bank accounts; the level of tax compliance is significant to the performance of the National Revenue Authority; and adoption of ICT has positive impact on a country’s tax collection rate. The paper recommends that the Government of Sierra Leone should embark on public sensitisation on the benefits of the adoption and use of ICT infrastructure that aids easy tax administration and collection in the other rural regions of the country. ESTIMATING EXCHANGE RATE PASS-THROUGH TO DOMESTIC PRICES; SIERRA LEONE EXPERIENCE
The study conducts an investigation that seeks to evaluate the nature of exchange rate pass-through on consumer prices in Sierra Leone. As a small, open economy, the country is susceptible to exogenous shocks. The exchange rate acts as a medium through which external shocks get transmitted to the real economy. Therefore, the general objective of the study is to assess the effect of the fluctuation of the exchange rate on domestic prices in Sierra Leone. More specifically, it sought to determine which type of exchange rate pass-through exists for Sierra Leone, using annual time series data between 1992 and 2022. The empirical analysis was based on a VECM model. The coefficient of the exchange rate (.5365) which is also significant at the 5% level of significance (p-value = 0.002), indicates that the exchange rate pass-through is incomplete in Sierra Leone. This means that a 1-unit depreciation of the Leone (increase in nominal exchange rate), leads to an increase in Sierra Leone consumer price by .5365 units or approximately 53.65%. This is an indication of indirect pass-through, where importers increase the price of imported goods to maintain their markup in the event of a nominal exchange rate depreciation. The recommendation to the finding is that since it was revealed that Sierra Leone has relatively high exchange rate shocks means that monetary authorities in Sierra Leone should pay more attention to the effects of EXR fluctuation on consumer prices. Measures such as the promotion of local production to substitute imported goods are key to addressing the effects of exchange rate variations. JEL: F31, E31, C32, O24 Article visualizations
THE ROLE OF HEALTH BENEFITS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF EMPLOYEES IN KENYA SCHOOL OF LAW
Without a doubt, the most significant valuable asset for every company is its workforce. Retaining and satisfying staff is the hardest thing a business can do in today's cutthroat economy. Being a business owner means you have to find ways to cut expenses without sacrificing the quality of your net outcome. Therefore, although employers want more from their staff, employees also want more from them. Rewarding workers for putting out their best effort to come up with innovative ideas that improve company efficiency and further enhance both the financial and non-financial performance of the firm is one of the most effective ways to inspire employees. Kenya School of Law faces challenges pertaining to rewards strategies due to inadequate budgetary allocation and prolonged policy development processes that have affected employee performance. Recently, the Kenya School of Law reported reduced staff and staff dissatisfaction as among the reasons for not meeting its objectives. This thus justified the need as to why this study was carried out, with the aim to examine reward strategies and the performance of employees in Kenya School of Law. The specific objective of the study was: to analyze the effect of healthcare benefits on the performance of employees in Kenya School of Law. The study utilized a descriptive research design. The study targeted 155 respondents who are employees of the Kenya School of Law. The census approach was adopted as a result of the limited size of the research population. Both open and closed-ended questions in the questionnaire tool were employed to collect primary data from the respondents. Quantitative data was analyzed through descriptive statistics using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 22 and Microsoft Excel and through inferential statistics mainly through multiple regression analysis. The study concludes that healthcare benefits should be taken into consideration since they had a positive and significant effect on the performance of employees at the Kenya School of Law. STRATEGIC ALLIANCE AND PROCUREMENT PERFORMANCE OF PRIVATE SUGAR PROCESSING FIRMS IN KENYA
In today’s world, procurement performance in private sugar firms is one of the emerging issues of concern. Sugar firms are still hurtling down on cost even when the effects are detrimental to the product’s quality. In some scenarios, the quality dimension gets altered to save cost, and the management holds high optimism hoping the quality risk does not get discovered. The main objective of the study was to establish the effect of information sharing on the procurement performance of private sugar firms in Kenya. The study was guided by: Information Theory, Principal Agent Theory, and Stakeholders’ Theory. Positivism research philosophy was used. The study adopted a descriptive research design. The target population of the study was 50 respondents from ten private sugar manufacturing firms in Kenya. The study employed census sampling. Questionnaires were used to collect primary data. Data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics that involved multiple linear regressions showed that information sharing, supplier training, contract management and strategic alliance explained 62.9% of variations in the procurement performance of private sugar firms in Kenya. Regression coefficients of 0.354 for strategic alliance indicated that embracing supplier management practices improved procurement performance. JEL: L10; L11; L60; L66 Article visualizations
DEMYSTIFYING AGRICULTURAL POPULISM IN MAASAI RANGELANDS IN THE SOUTHWESTERN KENYA
Agricultural expansion in Kenya’s Amboseli region has resulted in proven negative effects both on native megafauna that use the ecosystem as a dispersal area, as well as on grazing and water resources utilized by local livestock herds. While community conservancy programs supported by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) provide an ecologically sustainable alternative to farming’s increasing popularity, the claim that agriculture is the most profitable land-use option for the region remains dominant –– even as increasingly frequent droughts interrupt agricultural processes. This study presents a comparative analysis of the overall benefit of land-use– agriculture and conservancies– in the Amboseli region. We draw on fieldwork conducted between March - May 2023, in the former Kimana Group Ranch in the Amboseli region of southwestern Kenya. Data was collected through household surveys with 150 landowners, and key informant interviews with leaders and officers of various conservancies and NGOs in the area. We conducted approximate analyses of the annual cash flow reported by each household to compare the profitability of different land-use options. The results of the study show that, while agriculture is by far the most popular land-use option in Amboseli, the region’s traditional pastoralist practices remain the most financially stable and lucrative land-use option. Leasing land for conservation through community conservancies was the second most profitable. Irrigated agriculture, mostly practiced by non-Maasai people, showed relatively short-lived financial returns. We argue that increased farming in Maasai rangelands is fueled primarily by land privatization and the promise of immediate profits –– promises whose benefits are far outweighed by long-term economic and socio-ecological consequences. Considering that indigenous Maasai pastoralism is most sustainable for the semiarid rangeland and that our research indicated agriculture is practiced most by non-Maasai, we argue for an examination of how traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) competes with non-indigenous practices, especially considering that rangelands in East Africa are increasingly becoming fragile due to climate change. REPRESENTATIONS OF PRESCHOOL TEACHERS ON CHILDREN'S GENDER AS A FACTOR IN DIFFERENTIATING THEIR FREE PLAY IN THE SCHOOLYARD
Gendered subjectivities are shaped within social structures, such as education, where gender inequalities intersect with other forms of social disparity. The individuals who operate within these structures play a role in both reproducing and maintaining ine-qualities, as well as in actively challenging them. However, as active agents, they can challenge gender order and inequalities, but their capacity to do so is subject to the constraints imposed by the framework in which they operate. The interaction between teachers and children in the schoolyard is a given, with the schoolyard serving as a space of socialization and interaction, thus becoming a field for the formation and nego-tiation of children's subjectivities. Teachers, through their presence in the schoolyard and their representations of children's gender characteristics, are expected to influence the formation of gendered subjectivities. The representations of preschool teachers re-garding children's gender as a factor in differentiating their free play in the schoolyard were the subject of this qualitative study, conducted through interviews. Twelve kin-dergarten teachers working in public and private schools in the Thessaloniki area par-ticipated. The thematic analysis of the data revealed that while the sample of teachers expressed opposition to gender segregation and inequalities, they adopted a neutral stance toward what occurs in the schoolyard. Moreover, many justified the differences they observed in boys' and girls' play in biological terms, among other reasons. Article visualizations
FROM SERVICE TO SUPERIORITY: UNVEILING THE IMPACT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ON CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE IN THE RETAIL INDUSTRY, KLANG VALLEY, MALAYSIA
The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in retail has redefined customer experience, offering new opportunities for personalisation, service quality enhancement, and continuous service delivery. For confidentiality, the name of the retailer is withheld. This study investigates the impact of AI on customers’ experience at XYZ Hypermarkets in Klang Valley, Malaysia, focusing on four key areas: personalisation, service quality, hassle-free service, and customer service. Using quantitative methods, data were gathered from 365 respondents to assess the influence of AI-driven services on customer experience. The findings reveal that hassle-free service significantly enhances customer experience, while personalisation, service quality, and customer service show no significant impact. These results suggest that while AI is effective in streamlining operations and reducing customer effort, it may fall short in providing the emotional engagement needed to enhance the overall customer experience. This study highlights the importance of balancing AI efficiency with human interaction, particularly in relational services. This research offers valuable insights for retailers, academics, and small business owners, emphasizing the need to adopt AI technologies that focus on customer convenience and experience while maintaining a personal touch. This study clearly highlights the implications for the retail industry, demonstrating that AI can significantly enhance customer experience, but its strategic integration is crucial to address both operational efficiency and emotional engagement.
