OPPORTUNITIES AND BARRIERS TO LEADERSHIP FOR FEMALE FINANCE LEADERS IN THE UK

    Get PDF
Despite legal and societal advancements that have increased the presence of women in the finance sector, the representation of women in finance director roles remains limited. In FTSE 100 companies, men still hold finance director positions at a rate seven times higher than women, a trend reflective of the broader industry. This qualitative inquiry delves into the factors contributing to the success factors and obstacles to leadership faced by female finance directors in the United Kingdom. By conducting interviews with accomplished female finance directors, the study aims to identify the factors that prevent and enable females to become leaders in the finance industry. Notably, this research identifies enduring social and cultural hurdles obstructing female progress, and how they can be supported as they progress their career. A significant finding emerges: many interviewed women endorse individuals who align with their assertive work values, which often align with masculine traits. Females have to conform to a working environment and practices, and this impacts negatively on their social life, job satisfaction and identity. Given the target-driven nature of finance, the prospect of a radical top-down transformation is generally seen as unlikely. Consequently, female leaders face limitations in their capacity to serve as "gatekeepers" for advancing the careers of fellow women. Recommendations include a departure from the performance-centric approach entrenched in finance.  Article visualizations

In the framework of human capital development, this thesis proposal seeks to investigate the effects of curricular relevance, financial resource allocation, and government involvement on student learning outcomes. The goal of the study is to comprehend how financial resources allocated to education systems, curriculum design, and government regulations relate to one another and how these elements affect student learning outcomes. This study uses a mixed-methods approach to combine document analysis, qualitative interviews, and quantitative data analysis in order to provide a thorough grasp of the subject. It is impossible to exaggerate the role that high-quality education plays in developing human capital. When it comes to developing educational policy and putting measures into place that improve educational results, governments are essential. Analyzing how government involvement affects student learning outcomes in human capital development is the primary goal of this research. This research aims to investigate the impact of different intervention tactics on student performance and their success by looking at the policies, programs, and initiatives put in place by governments. Another important component of education that has a direct impact on student learning results is the relevancy of the curriculum. Investigating how curriculum relevance can improve student learning outcomes is the study's second goal. In order to determine how well-designed and pertinent curricula contribute to the development of human capital, this research will look at how the curriculum aligns with the demands of society and the labor market. This study will also look into the variables that affect curriculum design and the difficulties in maintaining curriculum relevance. The distribution of financial resources has a significant impact on the effectiveness and quality of educational systems. Examining how financial resources are distributed in education and how it affects student learning results is the third goal of this research project. This study aims to evaluate the efficiency and equity of resource allocation by examining the allocation of financial resources among various schools and areas. Additionally, taking into account elements like infrastructure, instructional materials, and teacher-student ratios, it will investigate the connection between the distribution of financial resources and student performance. By tackling these goals, the study hopes to offer insightful analysis and suggestions for sensible government action, curriculum creation, and financial resource distribution that will enhance student learning outcomes and promote the growth of human capital. The results of this study will add to the body of knowledge by improving our comprehension of the intricate interactions that occur between educational systems' financial resource distribution, curriculum relevance, and governmental regulations.  Article visualizations

    Get PDF
This study addressed the fragmentation of AI governance approaches across Africa and examined the African Union's (AU) potential role in unifying these efforts. Using qualitative document analysis of AU publications and academic literature, the research explored the AU's continental AI governance approach, key initiatives, challenges, and future directions. Findings revealed that the AU made significant progress through initiatives such as the Continental AI Strategy (2024), the African Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (ARCAI), the African Digital Compact, and the AU Data Policy Framework. However, challenges persisted, including regulatory fragmentation among member states and infrastructure disparities. The study discussed the AU's proposed governance mechanisms, including a high-level coordination mechanism on AI and adaptable regulation models, while noting threats from rapid global AI development and widening digital divides. It concluded that the AU's success in AI governance hinged on balancing innovation with ethics, addressing Africa-specific challenges, and fostering collaboration. Key recommendations included accelerating model AI regulation development, prioritizing digital infrastructure initiatives, enhancing ARCAI's role in building local expertise, and strengthening Africa's voice in global AI governance. This research contributes to the literature on AI governance in Africa, offering insights for policymakers on developing uniquely African approaches to inform global discussions.  Article visualizations

    Get PDF
The issue of employers often failing to provide the required training and support to meet employees’ expectations is crucial, especially if the organization wants to remain competitive and prioritise employees' career growth and development.  This study's overarching aim is to empirically examine how training and development impact employee performance in selected manufacturing enterprises (MMEs). An unrestricted Probability sampling strategy was deployed with a mixed approach on a total of 155 respondents from various level positions collected through a self-administered questionnaire, and direct interviews were also conducted with respondents from selected manufacturing enterprises.   The collected data was analyzed using statistical tools (SPSS version 21). Descriptive and inferential statistics were used as a measure of the strength and direction of the impact relationship. This study seeks to establish how the independence variables, i.e. training and development, impact employee performance. The results revealed that training and development were critical and had a strong, significant relationship with employee performance. The significant regression equation was found p< .05, with an R² = .461. The R² value of .461 indicates that 46.1% of the variation in employee performance is significantly explained by the model containing independent variables. Therefore, the study contributes to the development of training and development literature by providing a reasonable explanation of its effects on employee performance. Moreover, analysis of unstandardized coefficients shows that the beta value of 0.700 was supported by stronger predictors affecting employee performance in manufacturing enterprises

ESTIMATING THE EFFECT OF TAXATION ON THE ECONOMIC GROWTH OF SIERRA LEONE USING A TIME SERIES ANALYSIS

    Get PDF
This study delves into the impact of taxation on the economic growth of Sierra Leone, aiming to establish a comprehensive understanding of the intricate relationship between taxation and the country's economic trajectory. Employing time series data spanning from 1995 to 2022, the study utilizes the Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) framework for analysis. Unit root analysis reveals that certain variables remain stable at levels, while others achieve stability at their first difference. The bound test cointegration results affirm the presence of cointegration, indicating a long-term relationship between taxation and economic growth in Sierra Leone. The study highlights the overall significance of explanatory variables in explaining Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The coefficient of determination indicates that 77.37 percent of GDP variation is explained by indirect taxes, other taxes, interest rates, and foreign direct investment. Notably, the coefficient of indirect taxes demonstrates a negative and statistically significant influence on short-term economic growth in Sierra Leone. In contrast, interest rates exhibit positive and individually significant effects on short-term economic growth. The findings suggest that indirect taxes in Sierra Leone stimulate consumption but reduce savings. Consequently, policymakers are urged to prioritize enhancing international relations to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and promote export activities, thereby bolstering export revenue and fostering economic growth. JEL: O11, O23, H20, H22, C22, F21, E62  Article visualizations

    Get PDF
This paper examined the effect of money market instruments on economic growth in Nigeria from 1980 to 2020. To achieve the above objective, secondary data on real gross domestic product, treasury bills, commercial papers, bankers’ acceptances and monetary policy rate were sourced from the statistical bulletin of Nigeria’s apex bank. The Error Correction Mechanism (ECM) was used as the main analytical tool. The result revealed that all the instruments of money market – treasury bills, commercial papers and bankers’ acceptances have positive effect on economic growth in Nigeria during the period of study. This means that money market instruments – treasury bills, commercial papers and bankers acceptances enhanced economic growth in Nigeria during the period of study. However, only bankers’ acceptances significantly (meaningfully) influenced economic growth in Nigeria during the period of study. What this suggests is that though treasury bills and commercial papers have contributed to economic growth in Nigeria from 1980 to 2020, but their contribution is very low to trigger a meaningful increase in economic growth. At the same time, Monetary Policy Rate has negative and insignificant relationship with economic growth in Nigeria during the period considered in this study. The study concluded that money market instruments - treasury bills, commercial papers and bankers’ acceptances have impacted on economic growth in Nigeria. Therefore, recommended that government should put in place policies that will increase the operations of money market in Nigeria in order to make short-term securities and loans available for investment. Deposit money banks and other operators in the money market should be encouraged to possess sufficient approved securities for trading in the money market. Government should ensure easy and effective communication between the operators in the money market. At the same time, there should be a downward review of the cost of raising funds in the Nigerian money market so as to enhance competitiveness and improve the attractiveness of the market as one of the major sources of raising funds for investment which in turn will increase economic growth in Nigeria.JEL: E44; G14  Article visualizations
