Pippi Longstocking and the father of enjoyment
No full textIn his essay, “Interpretation and the apparent sameness of children’s novels”, Perry Nodelman comes to a conclusion that seems to distress him. He asserts that interpretation should allow literary critics to figure out what makes good books better than not-so-good books, that it should bring to light those qualities that make a book unique or especially deserving of our esteem. Unfortunately, he finds that this is not the case with children’s literature. Indeed what one uncovers when one interprets high quality, beloved children’s books is not their thematic distinctiveness or originality, but their correspondences and similarities. Specifically, he says that children’s novels “all balance the same set of opposites: home and exile, escape and security, the familiar and the foreign, the strange and the comfortable, fear and acceptance, isolation and togetherness, the disorderly and the patterned” and that “all in some way combine what one wishes for with what one must accept…and all create balances between these extremes” (Nodelman 1985, 18, 20). He concludes that we must find “other means of interpretation” if we wish to understand excellence in children’s fiction (Nodelman 1985, 20)

No full textAstrid Lindgren’s archives in the National Library of Sweden, Manuscript Dept (L 230), are probably the most extensive any individual Swede has left behind. After some ten years of cataloguing, the archives are now open for research. The archives consist of some 75 000 letters to the author from readers, colleagues, publishers, translators, film and theatre producers, children and many others all over the world; a thousand copies of letters written by her; 600 manuscripts to books, plays, films and essays; 100 000 newspaper; clippings; royalties; photos; shorthand notes etc. , in all more than 140 shelf metres of documents (see www.ediffah.org and search ”Astrid Lindgrens arkiv” for a list of contents). Short hand notes and correspondence require special permission from Astrid Lindgren’s estate, www.saltkrakan.se; [email protected]. The material in the archives should be of interest not only for researches of juvenile literature but also research into art and language education, film and drama, sociology, economics, translation and many other subjects and open up new fields of research on the author’s work. The archives also mirror the fact that Lindgren played an important role in public debate on different subjects such as child care and child abuse, nuclear power and the treatment of farm animals. The archives were included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register in 2005

No full textAt the age of 78 Lindgren began her campaign of writing to the newspapers, her correspondence subsequently being collected in a book called Min ko vill ha roligt (“My Cow Wants to Have Fun”) (1990) – the original letter being about a lovesick cow that goes in search of a bull, rather than suffer artificial insemination. This led Lindgren to look at other farming methods, and to the eventual passing in 1988 of the “Lex Lindgren”, for the more humane treatment of animals

No full textKära läsare av Barnboken! Som Du säkert känner till har Sonja Svensson, efter 22 år, lämnat sitt uppdrag som chef för Svenska barnboksinstitutet. Alldeles oavsett vem som utsetts att efterträda Sonja hade ett stort tomrum uppstått. Hennes insatser för SBI och barnlitteraturen kan inte överskattas. Få kan tävla med Sonja vad gäller beläsenhet, forskarerfarenhet, engagemang, analys- och formuleringsförmåga. Jag är glad för att hon ändå finns kvar i SBI:s organisation och att hon får ägna sig åt sitt pionjärarbete; kartläggningen av de svenska barntidningarnas tidiga historia
