A Positive Light on COVID-19
Get PDFBelieve it or not, COVID was a breath of fresh air for me. Before the outbreak, I attended a large, public high school and was struggling to find my path. Though I had made efforts to widen my social networks by playing sports and joining clubs, I was not finding my people. Right before quarantine began, I had been struggling through a nasty breakup. Every day I feared coming to school, worrying about rumors going around or who I would see in the hallways. In a time when I was struggling to find my place in a toxic environment, being quarantined at home gave me the chance to take time for myself and heal as an individual
Remembering Covid-19

During this extended period of time when I was at home doing school online, and not able to attend my extracurricular activities, I found out who I really was as a person. The whole quarantine time was like one long therapy session where you could sit and reflect about your past and future, and what you wanted to make of it. Restricted Dispersal and Phenotypic Response to Water Depth in a Foundation Seagrass
Get PDFSpecies conservation and management benefit from precise understanding of natural patterns of dispersal and genetic variation. Using recent advances in indirect genetic methods applied to both adult plants and dispersed seeds, we find that the mean seed dispersal in a threatened marine foundation plant (the eelgrass Zostera marina) is approximately 100-200 m. This distance is surprisingly more similar to that of wind-dispersed terrestrial seeds (~10s to 100s of meters) than the passive dispersal of marine propagules via currents (~10s to 100s of kilometres). Because nearshore marine plants like Zostera are commonly distributed across strong selective gradients driven by bathymetry (depth) even within these restricted spatial scales, seeds are capable of dispersing to novel water depths and experiencing profound shifts in light availability, temperature and wave exposure. We documented strong phenotypic variation and genome-wide differentiation among plants separated by approximately the spatial scale of mean realised dispersal. This result suggests genetic isolation by environment in response to depth-related environmental gradients as one plausible explanation for this pattern. The ratio of effective to census size (or Ne/Nc) approximated 0.1%, indicating that a fraction of existing plants provides the genetic variation to allow adaptation to environmental change. Our results suggest that successful conservation of seagrass meadows that can adapt to microspatial and temporal variation in environmental conditions will be low without direct and persistent intervention using large numbers of individuals or a targeted selection of genotypes

An Improvement Science Dissertation In Practice: Examining The Use Of Professional Learning To Build Capacity For Teachers To Use Practices That Support SEL
Get PDFThis mixed-methods study examined the impact of professional learning on the effectiveness of integrating Second Step®, an evidenced-based social and emotional learning (SEL) program that focuses on school climate by promoting bullying prevention and social-emotional skills. Teacher efficacy and classroom culture at a prekindergarten through fifth-grade Interdistrict magnet school in the Northeastern Region of the United States was also explored. Improvement Science, a theory developed by the Carnegie Foundation that focuses on a user and problem-centered approach to improving learning outcomes and teaching, guided this study. Defined outcome measures, including study participants’ completion of surveys, participation in professional learning, classroom observations, and an interview to determine the impacts of implementing the Second Step® curriculum on teaching practices, helped determine if the selected change idea improved the problem of practice. Additional steps for this Improvement Science Dissertation in Practice (ISDiP) included the implementation of the intervention, gathering and analyzing data, and reflecting upon the process. This ISDiP focused on using professional learning to build the capacity for teachers to use practices that support SEL. The study\u27s findings shed light on classroom teacher\u27s perceived change in SEL practices and the potential impact of promoting SEL at schools. This study contributes to the literature and reinforces the need for professional learning for teachers to use practices that support SEL
Reliability and Validity of the Medial Standing Overhead Arm Reach (SOAR) Test as a Measure of Functional Hip Adduction Motion

The Posterior Standing Overhead Arm Reach (SOAR) test has been previously reported as a reliable clinical measure of closed chain hip extension motion. The proposed Medial SOAR test expands on that testing approach to provide a similar measure of functional hip adduction motion. This was a preliminary intrarater and interrater reliability and validity study of the Medial SOAR test as a measure of functional hip adduction. Design

Fifty hips were assessed in 25 (22 female) asymptomatic participants (mean age = 23.4 years, SD = 0.8). Main measures
Maximum hip adduction during the Medial SOAR test was measured with a standard goniometer independently by two examiners. The test was also performed using three-dimensional motion capture. The intrarater and interrater reliability of the goniometric measure was determined using intraclass correlation coefficients, and the relationship between measures obtained via goniometry and three-dimensional motion capture was assessed with Pearson correlations and Bland–Altman analysis. Results
Intrarater reliability (ICC2,3) was 0.88 (95% CI = 0.80–0.92) for Examiner 1 and 0.87 (95% CI = 0.79–0.92) for Examiner 2. The standard error of measurement and minimal detectable change were less than 3.0°. Interrater reliability demonstrated an intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.62 (95% CI = 0.28–0.79). Pearson correlations were significant with low-to-moderate associations (r = 0.49, P \u3c 0.001; r = 0.24, P = 0.045). Conclusions
Similar to the previously reported Posterior SOAR test, the Medial SOAR test demonstrated acceptable intrarater and interrater reliability, along with low-to-moderate associations with three-dimensional motion capture. The Medial SOAR test has the potential to provide a reliable and accurate assessment of closed chain hip adduction
ChatGPT for Marketers: Limitations and Mitigations
No full textAs artificial intelligence (AI) technologies continue to revolutionise various industries, marketers have eagerly embraced AI-powered tools to enhance their strategies and reach their target audiences more effectively. This paper provides a critical examination of the limitations and failures of ChatGPT — the widely-used language model based on GPT architecture, which has gained significant attention as a potential asset for marketers in assisting marketers. Through a comprehensive analysis, the paper explores how ChatGPT falls short in understanding consumer needs and preferences, its potential to generate misleading or inaccurate information, implications for branding and communication strategies and lack of marketing expertise. Moreover, ethical concerns and risks associated with ChatGPT’s deployment in marketing are discussed, highlighting issues such as deceptive practices and data security. Case studies exemplify instances where ChatGPT has fallen short, while offering insights into successful strategies adopted by companies to address its limitations. The paper concludes with a call for responsible implementation through domain-specific fine-tuning, prompt-engineering and general human oversight and ongoing evaluation of AI technologies to enhance their utility and mitigate their failures within marketing
