Three Dilemmas

Each has a simplistic opening that, when delved into deeper, reveals itself to be three sets of the same problem. Each problem gaining complexity as the reader progresses. In this paper, we use Bayes’ Theorem to help explain how each answer is possible, as well as how they are alike in their math and structures
CRISPR-Cas9: Will it Revolutionize the Landscape of Human Health?
Get PDFClustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) based gene editing has emerged as an invaluable tool for advances in human health. Through the simple design of single-guide RNAs (sgRNAs), CRISPR-associated proteins (Cas) are guided to make edits within genomes with relative ease compared to previous gene editing techniques. The development of this technology has allowed for improved treatment of diseases such as Sickle Cell Anemia and Leber Congenital Amaurosis. Its usage extends further than just disease treatments, as seen by the ability to decrease malaria transmission rates and increase nutritional value in food. Despite justifiable concerns with the possibility of CRISPR making unwanted gene edits, issues of delivery to cells, and ethical implications, the benefits of CRISPR cannot be ignored. With future work being completed in conjunction with the already known feats of the technology, CRISPR gene editing will ultimately revolutionize the landscape of human health
Fairy Tales & Foundations: Exploring Student Growth Through Story Analysis in Third Grade
No full textThis project shares my experience teaching a three-day fairy tale lesson during my student teaching in a third-grade classroom. The lessons focused on helping students understand key story elements, like the main character, setting, and message. Students were grouped by reading ability, using data from the DIBELS assessment, and received texts that matched their skill levels. I used modeling, read alouds, and graphic organizers to support learning. Student work was scored using a rubric, and the data showed growth from Day 1 to Day 3, especially in identifying a story’s message. This experience showed me the importance of scaffolding, differentiation, and using data to guide instruction
Brain Transcriptomics of a Social Challenge and Maternal Aggression In Incubating Female Tree Swallows
Get PDFAggressive behavior is ubiquitous across many contexts, including defense of territories, mates, and offspring. For decades, researchers have detailed the effect of aggressive behavior on physiology, but our understanding of these mechanisms in females lags behind that of males, despite the fact that female aggression is widespread, particularly in the context of maternal defense of eggs or offspring (i.e., maternal aggression). Here, we measured effects of a social challenge on brain gene expression in free-living incubating females. We hypothesized that the social challenge would generate at least one of three transcriptomic effects: (1) sensitizing the brain to otherwise low levels of sex steroids, (2) changing other neuroendocrine signaling pathways associated with social behavior (e.g., dopamine), or (3) broad shifts related to metabolism or immune function. We tested these hypotheses in incubating female tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor), exposing 10 females to a 30-min simulated territorial intrusion, which elicited maternal aggression. After this challenge, we measured neural gene expression via RNA-seq and compared gene expression to 10 unchallenged controls. We saw no global treatment effect on gene expression. However, within the experimental group, more maternal aggression was correlated with upregulation of genes associated with immune activation and downregulation of genes associated with synaptic plasticity. Though more research is needed to understand the downstream effects of these transcriptional differences, our findings generate key questions about how the brain responds to social challenges across different contexts

No full textPostpartum mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) are distressing feelings that occur throughout the first year of pregnancy. These emotions can significantly disrupt the postpartum period, often interfering with maternal-infant bonding. Despite being the most common postpartum complication, PMADs remain widely underdiagnosed due to inadequate screening tools and a lack of awareness among nurses. Leaving PMADs untreated can have detrimental consequences, including a heightened risk of maternal and infant mortality. With this in mind, healthcare professionals must take proactive steps to implement a more holistic approach to postpartum care that prioritizes both physical and mental health. Ensuring access to comprehensive mental healthcare on postpartum units is essential to improving patient outcomes
