The Impact of Year-Round Strength and Speed Training on Performance in Elite Baseball Players
This project examines the impact of year-round strength and speed training on athletic performance in elite high school baseball players at Grind Athlete Performance in Orange, CT. Six athletes consistently participated in off-season and in-season training phases, attending five weekly sessions focused on strength, speed, and agility. Over one year, athletes achieved notable gains in key performance indicators (KPIs), with average gains of 183 lbs. in the deadlift, 104 lbs. in the squat, and 70 lbs. in the bench press. The off-season training phase emphasized building foundational strength and power, leading to enhanced performance during competition. The in-season phase focused on maintaining these improvements while mitigating injury risk through strategic load management and programming. Findings support the importance of structured, year-round training to optimize athletic development and keep athletes performing safely at a high level throughout the season
How does the CPA exam format influence candidate performance?
Abstract
For prospective accountants, passing the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) exam is a crucial step in the certification process, but the format of the test can have a big effect on how well candidates perform. This paper dives into the changes and evolution of the CPA Exam and the ripple effects it has on how candidates exhibit their knowledge and abilities. It dissects all three core exams that are required. Additionally, the newly introduced specific discipline exams are examined and discussed in depth. The formats of the different exams are explored in relation to candidate performance and difficulty. In the end, the analysis sheds light on how the structure of the CPA exam affects applicant performance as well as the broader implications for professional growth and accounting education
The Influence of TikTok and Twitter on Voter Turnout: Social Media’s Role in Political Engagement
TikTok and Twitter are two of the most influential social media platforms, particularly among young adults. This research explores how TikTok and Twitter impact youth voter turnout and investigates how targeted strategies on these platforms could enhance or damage political engagement, especially in the electoral process. Using quantitative data from the 2020 American National Election Studies (ANES) survey, I compare how the usage of different social media platforms, namely Tiktok and Twitter, affects voting behaviors in the United Stateswhile controlling for a list of variables such as region, income, and education. The findings reveal that both TikTok and Twitter are frequently used. This widespread use presents an opportunity to use their influence to encourage or discourage greater political participation, particularly in elections. By designing targeted strategies that promote voter education and engagement, TikTok and Twitter could play a key role in increasing political involvement in elections. This research highlights the significant role social media platforms can play in shaping political behaviors and how it can increase voter turnout in the United States
Rescuing behavioral development after prenatal alcohol exposure in mice
Due to the difficulty of detecting a pregnancy, prior to 6 weeks of gestation, ~30% of pregnant women report drinking alcohol during the first trimester. Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) can be extremely dangerous for the development of a child, often leading to an increased risk of developing fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs), which can affect a child’s ability to learn, control behavior, or regulate emotions. Alcohol initially stimulates an inflammatory cells in the central nervous system, known as microglia, causing a fetal anti- inflammatory response which alters the vascular and neurological in the fetal brain. Repeated or chronic alcohol exposure forces the microglia to remain in an inflammatory state that leads to the development of FASDs. Here, we present our preliminary investigation into the behavioral effects of PAE on mice exposed to ethanol during the first trimester of pregnancy. The behavioral impact of the PAE is evaluated using a series of three tests including: open field tests used to measure the activity levels; object recognition tests used to assess memory and recall; and social interaction tests to investigate preference of a differing social stimuli. This is the first step in the projects overall aim to use in-utero pharmacotherapy to inhibit the post-PAE chronically active microglia to prevent the development of FASDs
Slow and Steady: A Pilot Study of Preschoolers\u27 Reaction Time and Executive Functions
DNA Extractions and PCR Amplification to Identify Meiofauna in Sediment from a Disturbed Shoreline
Meiofauna are a diverse group of benthic invertebrates that range between 0.04 mm and 1mm in size. They represent 24 of the 35 animal phyla and are ideal for biomonitoring. Their fast population turnover means that community composition can indicate anthropogenic influence and environmental health. The long-term goal of this project is to determine if visual identification of meiofauna at the level of phyla is sufficient to investigate community changes along a disturbed shoreline (Seaside Park; Bridgeport, CT); or if it is necessary to identify lower taxonomic levels via DNA metabarcoding. The latter would allow for the identification of taxa at genus or species levels based on a short variable region in the DNA. We previously optimized a protocol to extract DNA from the sediment samples using the Qiagen DNeasy PowerSoil Pro Kit. Currently, we have generated DNA extractions from sediment samples that range across time and space and conducted PCR on these extractions to amplify a variable region of the 18S rRNA gene. We will be sequencing these amplicons to identify taxa within the sediment samples
The Role of the SLP in Promoting Feeding Efficiency in the NICU
This literature review explores the crucial role of Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) in promoting feeding efficiency among high-risk infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). With ongoing advancements in medical care leading to higher survival rates among preterm and medically fragile infants, there has been a corresponding increase in the identification of feeding and swallowing disorders. Over half a million children in the U.S. are diagnosed with dysphagia annually, highlighting the necessity for early intervention by SLPs, particularly in the NICU, where nearly 40% of affected children have a history of preterm birth. SLPs are essential in conducting thorough assessments and implementing strategies to enhance feeding efficiency. These strategies include nonnutritive sucking practices aimed at stimulating feeding reflexes, careful clinical evaluations, and interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure comprehensive care. Techniques such as Video Fluoroscopic Swallow Studies (VFSS) and Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) are also employed to accurately diagnose and manage dysphagia amongst infants. Furthermore, collaboration within interdisciplinary teams is vital, considering factors such as medical stability, nutrition, and behavioral aspects that impact swallowing safety. The paper emphasizes the need for SLPs to work closely with other specialists to facilitate optimal feeding outcomes while minimizing risks associated with oral feeding, ultimately promoting better health and development for vulnerable infants. Overall, this study underscores the vital contributions of SLPs in NICU settings, advocating for multifaceted approaches and early intervention to enhance feeding and swallowing capabilities in high-risk populations
