Conflicted Memory, Irreversible Loss: Dissociative Projection in Kazuo Ishiguro’s A Pale View of Hills and Yasunari Kawabata’s The Sound of the Mountain
The task of identifying main hallmarks of Ishiguro’s and Kawabata’s oeuvres is but of double-edged nature – one may be unconsciously driven to seemingly obvious and unequivocal categorisations, naming attempts at selfunderstanding and self-interpretation as the core of their narratives. Both writers are associated with highly poeticised, sensual, and atmospheric explorations of the past long gone. They thoroughly investigate and comment upon one’s personal loss, alienation, displacement, or falling into obsolescence. They depict the worlds that perished once and for all, simultaneously making them a mythologised locus of ultimate contentment, plenitude, and fulfilment. In this sense, the past is superimposable onto the present – it develops into a safe haven formed out of one’s innermost feelings and memories, a place where one takes refuge in one’s reminiscences. This paper surveys the role of memory, nostalgia, and loss in Ishiguro’s first novel, A Pale View of Hills, and Kawabata’s work from his mature period, The Sound of the Mountain. The former, a veritable attempt at recreating and re-orientalising the Orient, is subjected to a comparative analysis with the publication often assessed as the pinnacle of post-war Japanese literature. Characterial disintegration, dissociative symptoms, and affectivity that are present in both novels are analysed as determinants of their fragmentary narrative structure

Práve z tohto dôvodu sa každá krajina snaží o vlastnú ropnú bezpečnosť budovaním núdzových zásob a systému riadenia ropnej bezpečnosti štátu. Horoscopes Prepared by Master Astrologers from Krakow at the Turn of the 15th and 16th Century (according to the BJ 3225 and 3227 manuscripts)
The article presents the output of Polish historiography concerning the research on Cracow horoscopes created before the year 1550, that is, in the period of the most active development of astrology as an academic science at the University of Krakow. At that time, astrology was a subject of enormous interest, which was reflected by the fact that horoscopes were ordered from professional astrologers (because of the price of the service, this was done mostly by wealthy people). These horoscopes were supposed to, according to popular views at that time, show the future. This, particularly with regard to the royal family, affected the policies of the ruler, and often the fate of the whole country. The article presents the output of Polish historiography concerning the research on Cracow horoscopes created before the year 1550, that is, in the period of the most active development of astrology as an academic science at the University of Krakow. Accipite disciplinam et servate illam. The Study Rules of the Episcopal Seminary in Hradec Králové Issued by the Bishops Blümegen and Trautmannsdorf between 1766 and 1802 as a Source of Knowledge of the Formation of the Diocesan Clergy
The present paper presents two documents controlling the course of the Bishopric Seminary and the Institute of Theology in Hradec Králové. The documents in question are Institutio seminarii episcopalis Reginae-Hradecensis, the statutes of the seminary issued by bishop Hermann Hannibal Blümegen in 1766, and Institutum seminarii episcopalis Reginæ-hradecii, the statutes created by bishop Tadeas M. Trautmannsdorf in 1802. Studying these normative sources can be a good starting point for our knowledge of the character and the life of the institution. Information on the clerical formation is extremely important for the period of Josephinism when the way and quality of the human life were significantly influenced by the clergy. The present paper presents two documents controlling the course of the Bishopric Seminary and the Institute of Theology in Hradec Králové. On the Difficulty of Refuting or Confirming the Arguments about the Caste System
Any attempt to understand Indian society through the scholarship on caste confronts us with a large number of problems. Scholars of the last 150 years have routinely observed and even criticised writings on caste for these problems. Such criticisms, however, have neither led us towards a confirmation nor the abandonment of the so-called caste theories. How do we explain this curious fact? Caste scholars hold the complexity of the issue as responsible for the lack of a robust theory of the caste system. Hence, they set out to collect more facts in order to buttress the theory. More facts, however, create more problems. It is not only the quest for more data, which is expected to save the ‘theories’ of the caste system, but also a struggle to match the thus collected field data with the claims about the caste system that unites the colonial and modern writers on the caste system. This paper suggests that the failure of caste scholars to account for field data is not a result of the complexity of the field, but rather an outcome of the kind of entity that the ‘caste system’ is. The so-called caste system is an experiential entity of the West, which can neither be confirmed nor refuted by using empirical facts from India. Any attempt to do so will only generate unproductive debates.Any attempt to understand Indian society through the scholarship on caste confronts us with a large number of problems.
