This paper investigates the crack driving force in the wheel-rail contact using a finite element model. The presented work determines significant model variables such as an effect of the loading type, friction coefficients, cyclic plasticity and the number of the integration contour on the crack driving force and lays the foundation for the further development of the model and computational schemes

Emotional pressure and violence in the milieu of the nobility in the Saxon era of the Polish-Lithuaninan Commonwealth

    No full text
The main goal of the study is to describe the phenomena of violence of emotional nature, both in parallel and subordinate relations, in the Saxon times. Various structures of dependencies affected all areas of social life in the First Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Saxon times, coming under the reign of two Saxon electors chosen for the kings of Poland ‒ Augustus II (died 1733) and his son Fryderyk August III (died 1763), is an interesting period of decline of baroque customs and culture that began to transform under the influence of the Enlightenment ideas of the mid-18th century. From the perspective of emotions, analysis of correspondence of this period brings interesting information about social structures, dependencies and forms of psychological violence arising at this level. In the article, the phenomena of emotional violence is put under analysis to find out whether and how the used means of emotional pressure influenced the form of social relations and political life. The main goal of the study is to describe the phenomena of violence of emotional nature, both in parallel and subordinate relations, in the Saxon times. Virgin or Wife? St Dorothy’s Legend on the Late Restoration Stage

    No full text
Although the early modern and the Restoration periods in England mark two distinct theatrical traditions, theproduction of English Restoration playwrights was to a great extent characterized by a conscious reliance on the legacy of their early modern precursors, which resulted in the high number of adaptations of old plays written and staged well into the 18th century. The canons of the two dramatic traditions are, thus, intertwined, and their parallel study provides valuable insight into the then dramatic conventions and the development of English drama in general. The present paper analyses the late Restoration adaptation Injured Virtue, or The Virgin Martyr (1714) by Benjamin Griffin and compares it with its early modern source, the tragedy The Virgin Martyr (1620) by Philip Massinger and Thomas Dekker. After addressing Griffin’s motives for choosing this particular Jacobean play, the paper discusses the most significant differences between the two texts and argues that Griffin’s alterations in the list of dramatis personae and his rhetorical transformation of the play’s main protagonists (especially that of the story’s heroine, St Dorothy) lead to the inevitable conclusion that, with the two periods in questions and their dramatic conventions being so different, not every Restoration adaptation managed to translate the early modern material successfully

“Self-Wrought Homemaking”: Revisiting the Concept of the “Home” in the Poetry of Naomi Shihab Nye and Lisa Suhair Majaj

    No full text
The study aims to investigate the changing perception of what constitutes the home in a number of selected poems by the Palestinian-American poets Naomi Shihab Nye and Lisa Suhair Majaj. As the home is constructed as a literary space rather than a physical place in their poetry, the traditionally established notion of the home as a “‘safe place’ that can exist unchanged by shifts of time or space” is refuted and is constructed as a “fertile site of contradictions demanding constant renegotiation and reconstruction.” The fixed perception of the home as a lost object in some of their poems, as well as the more realistic perception of the home as a substitute for the lost object in other poems are eventually replaced with a self-motivated realization of the need to free their perception from the essentialist categories of old and new, lost and retrieved through language. This realization on the part of the two poets is clarified by tracing, comparing and contrasting the change in the two poets’ perception of the home in a selection of their poems

From Murder to Miscegenation: Mark Twain’s Nevada Newspaper Hoaxes

    No full text
Mark Twain’s 21 months as a reporter for the Virginia City, Nevada Territorial-Enterprise (1862-64) were marked by a series of hoaxes that tested even Nevada frontier journalism’s loose standards for accuracy. Close study of these hoaxes in their progression reveals Twain at work on multiple narrative frames, twinned voices, and meta-plots — the stuff of his later fiction

Towards a Definition of the Victorian Ghost

    No full text
The aim of this paper is to contribute to the definition of the Victorian ghost story by defining the specific kind of ghost that is typical for the genre. It is not enough to define a ghost story through the mere presence of a ghost or a supernatural event, since that would also include other genres such as fairy tales, legends, folklore and mystery stories. Furthermore, the entities that appear in stories up to the eighteenth century are significantly different from the new kind of ghost that emerges only in the nineteenth century. In order to define the Victorian ghost, I turn to Jacques Derrida’s theory of the spectre as articulated in Spectres of Marx. I argue that the specific characteristics he considers to be key to the spectre, most importantly its ability to destabilize both ontology and semantics, may be used to set apart the Victorian ghost from other kinds of ghosts. Furthermore, such a definition also means that events or entities which are not supernatural in nature but fulfil the same role as the Derridean spectre may be included within the definition of the Victorian ghost story, which would significantly redraw the boundaries of the genre

    EVALUATION OF TIMETABLE PERFORMANCE

    No full text
Tento článek pojednává o možnosti zhodnocení výkonnosti jízdního řádu prostřednictvím jediného ukazatele. Tento ukazatel, nazvaný výkonnost jízdního řádu (VJŘ), je počítán na základě 3 parametrů – jednoho kvalitativního parametru (např. průměrný přírůstek zpoždění), jednoho kvantitativního parametru (např. počet vlaků) a jednoho doplňkového parametru (např. periodicita jízdního řádu). This article discusses the possibility of evaluating of timetable performace through a single indicator. This indicator, possibility of evaluating of timetable, is calculated on the basis of 3 parameters - one qualitative parameter (eg average delay increment), one quantitative parameter (eg number of trains) and one additional parameter (eg timetable frequency)

SUPPORT OF POTENTIAL OF INLAND WATERWAY TRANSPORT

    No full text
Potenciál európskych riek sa v súčasnosti využíva nedostatočne. Kompetentné orgány EÚ si kladú za cieľ zvyšovať potenciál vodných ciest a podporovať vnútrozemskú plavbu ako ekologický druh dopravy. Podporné programy EÚ zvyšujú povedomie o vodnej doprave, jej využitie a príspevok k dopravnej politike EÚ. Zaistením transparentnosti pri rozdeľovaní kompetencií na medzinárodnej úrovni a zavedením účinných finančných stimulov je možné zlepšiť celkové riadenie a podporiť rozvoj vnútrozemskej vodnej dopravy v rámci EÚ.The potential of European rivers is currently under-utilized. The EU competent authorities aim to increase the potential of waterways and promote inland navigation as an environmentally friendly mode of transport. EU support programs raise awareness of water use, its use and contribution to EU transport policy. By ensuring transparency in the allocation of competences at international level and by introducing effective financial incentives, it is possible to improve overall governance and support the development of inland waterway transport within the EU

    CAPACITY RANGE CALCULATION

    No full text
The aim of this paper is to use a new capacity parameter called capacity range for evaluation of individual operational concept on the same line before and after planned modernization. The paper uses a new capacity parameter called capacity range. The methodology of capacity range counting is based on one main number, but it takes more aspects. It deals with the operational facility occupancy rate, with the identifying of the bottleneck, with the simulation problems solved in the simulation program SimuT and with the quality aspect of capacity. It creates the link between capacity quality and quantity, between the displayed Ishikawa diagram and the possibility of the wrong operational concept selection. The definition is explained and then the parameter is calculated for a selected section of Týniště nad Orlicí – Choceň. The capacity range is counted for current conditions (single track line, old equipment) and then for comparison for future conditions (double track line, new safety equipment). Capacity range, expressed as dependence of the number of trains on average delay increment, is a useful capacity parameter particularly for coherent railway sections with remote traffic control
