    Harold Stannet Williams and Nagasaki--from the viewpoint of philosophical anthropology

    From the viewpoint of philosophical anthropology, this paper will consider the true character of Harold Stannet Williams. In his book, The Story of HOLME RINGER and CO., LTD. IN WESTERN JAPAN 1868-1968, H.S. Williams indicates that he felt a great interest in Nagasaki. Williams rates Frederick Ringer's work highly. As a historian, Williams attached importance to a search for historical facts. At the same time, however, Williams emphasized the importance of 'soul’ in his writings. This paper will explore the potentially contradictory standpoints, one, being faithful to facts and, the other, paying respect to the soul. In my opinion, these different qualities form the attractive personality of H.S. Williams who remained an outsider in Japan for over 60years.departmental bulletin pape

    Since olive cultivation in the northern part of Nagasaki Prefecture promises to contribute to the activation of the region, we examined the land suitable for olive cultivation. The precipitation and wind velocity are larger than that of Shodoshima island, but temperature and duration of sunshine as weather factors have a value similar to Shodoshima island.     Development of the environment management system in a local community using "education for sustainable development"

    Due to increasing environmental awareness in recent years,the implementation of an environment management system has become indispensable not only in corporate organizations but also in govern­ment bodies,schools and other settings. However,the gravity of environmental problems and the need for sustainability in society demands environmental conservation activities at a more general grassroots level.  The Nagasaki Institute of Applied Science Human Environment Faculty established an environment management system (EMS) and received ISO 14001 certification in March 2007.     Control of industrial robot systems using a Petri net simulator

    This paper deals with the development of a simulator and a controller for discrete event system control of robotic manufacturing systems using Petri nets. The simulator executes the Petri net model representing the given robotic task on the color display for visual examination of the system's behavior. The simulator is applied to the analysis and synthesis of discrete event system control and the simulation results can be used for the control algorithm of the developed controller. The controller is programmable by Petri nets directly, and its processing speed is higher than that of usual programmable logic controllers programmed by relay diagrams or logic diagrams. Consequently, the consistent process of system synthesis, analysis and control by Petri net technique can be realized by combining the simulator and the controller.departmental bulletin pape
