    THE REACTUALIZATION OF NATIONALISM AS A STATE DEFENSE STRATEGY IN THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE NUSANTARA INTERPRETATION OF AL-QUR’AN

    Abstract: This study is focused to explain the national issues in the potential for disintegration, and disorientation of the nation’s citizens through a study of interpretation with a starting point towards conceptual terms such as balad, syu‘ûbah, and ummah. This research used the maudhu‘i method with the structural semantic theory approach of Thosohiko Izutsu, and the text, context, contextual theory of Abdullah Saeed. This study aims to explain the values of nationalism in al-Qur’an through terms that are close to the meaning of the state, and nation such as balad, ummah, and syu‘ûbah. The result showed that the maintaining the security and welfare of the country is an important thing that have todo in order to build a peaceful, and prosperous nation’s civilization. Actualizing wasathiyah Islamic values, strengthening unity in diversity, and creating security, and prosperity for a nation is one of the concepts of defending the state to maintain the values of Indonesianalism which has a high level of diversity.Keywords: nationalism, state defense, Nusantara Qur’anic interpretatio

    TOWARDS QUALITY ISLAMIC EDUCATION: Madrasa Teachers’ Views on School Climate in East Java

    Abstract: This research explores teachers’ views on school climate, related to teacher’s age, gender, and teaching experience for Madrasah Tsnawiyah teachers. Research is carried out to realize the quality of Islamic education. The 370 teachers were given a school climate perception scale adapted from the Comprehensive School Climate Inventory (NSCC) developed by Cohen through Google Form. The scale includes four aspects: safety, teaching and learning, relationships, and the environment, with a Cronbach’s Alpha reliability value of 0.700. From the data collection results, it was found that the age and length of the teacher’s teaching were significantly related to the teacher’s view of the school climate. Teachers who have long teaching experience have a more positive perception than teachers who have little teaching experience. Likewise, the teacher’s age shows that older teachers give a better view of the school climate than younger teachers. On the other hand, gender is not significantly related, meaning that male and female teachers have the same view of the school climate.Keywords: school climate, age, gender, teaching experienc

    ULAMA, AL WASHLIYAH AND KNOWLEDGE IN MODERN INDONESIA (1930-1980)

    Abstract: This article examines the role of Al Washliyah ulamas in the development of knowledge in Indonesia. This study is a literature study, by applying Kuntowijoyo’s model, and utilizing historical and philosophical approach. Al-Attas' theory of the classification of knowledge will be used as a tool to analyze the topic of this study. The aim of this study is to find Al Washliyah scholars from 1930 to 1980 who played an important role in developing knowledge in Indonesia. This study argues that Al Washliyah ulamas have taken an important role in developing two types of knowledge, namely religious sciences; as well as the rational, intellectual and philosophical sciences, although their attention is more directed to the former. Their works cover the fields of the Qur’an, sunnah, shariah, theology, Islamic metaphysics (tasawuf), linguistics, comparative religion, philosophy, and history. They wrote using Latin script (Indonesian), Arabic script (Arabic) and Jawi script (Malay Arabic). The works of Al Washliyah ulamas have become a reference for their students and Muslims in East Sumatra and Aceh. Some of their works are still used as textbooks in a number of madrasas. This shows that their works are still in demand as proof that the influence of Al Washliyah scholars left an important mark.Keywords: ulama, Al Washliyah, classification of knowledge, religious sciences, rational science

    Abstrak: Al Jam’iyatul Washliyah merupakan organisasi Islam dengah jumlah pengikut yang signifikan. Studi tentang organisasi ini, terutama fatwa-fatwa keagamaannya, masih jarang dilakukan. Artikel ini mengkaji fatwa-fatwa Al Wasliyah tentang pemimpin non-Muslim, komunisme dan Ahmadiyah. Studi ini merupakan studi kepustakaan dengan pendekatan historis dan legal normatif. Sumber data primer penelitian ini adalah dokumen-dokumen milik Dewan Fatwa Al Washliyah, sedangkan sumber sekundernya adalah hasil-hasil penelitian para ahli tentang topik yang dibahas. Data dianalisis dengan metode analisis isi. Studi ini mengajukan argumen bahwa Al Washliyah yang menganut mazhab Syafi‘i dan Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama‘ah memberikan respons terhadap ragam soal keagamaan kontemporer, terutama terkait hukum memilih pemimpin dari kalangan non-Muslim, kedudukan hukum komunis, dan Ahmadiyah. Pandangan organisasi ini tegas, bahwa haram memilih non-Muslim sebagai pemimpin, komunis adalah kelompok kafir, dan Ahmadiyah adalah aliran sesat. Pandangan keagamaan Al Washliyah ini menegaskan posisi Al Washliyah sebagai kelompok Islam tradisional di Indonesia, dan cenderung menolak pemahaman liberal.Abstract: Al Jam'iyatul Washliyah is an Islamic organization with a significant number of followers. Studies on this organization, especially its religious fatwas, are still very limited. This article examines Al Wasliyah's fatwas on non-Muslim leaders, communism and Ahmadiyah. This study is a literature study with historical and legal normative approaches. The primary data sources of this study are documents belonging to the Fatwa Council of Al Washliyah, while the secondary sources are the results of research by experts on the topics discussed. The data is analyzed using the content analysis method. This study argues that Al Washliyah, which adheres to the Shafi'i school of thought and Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah, responds to a variety of contemporary religious issues, especially related to the law of electing leaders from among non-Muslims, the legal position of communists, and Ahmadiyya. The organization's view is firm, that it is forbidden to elect non-Muslims as leaders, communists are infidels, and Ahmadiyya is a cult. Al Washliyah's religious views emphasize Al Washliyah's position as a traditional Islamic group in Indonesia, and tend to reject liberal understanding.Keywords: Al Washliyah, fatwa, non-Muslim leaders, comunism, Ahmadiyah

    AN INQUIRY OF THE PRINCIPLES OF ISLAMIC EDUCATION MANAGEMENT IN THE QUR’AN

    Abstract: This article analyzes several well-known interpretations of the principles of Islamic education management in the Qur’an, Surah al-Taubah verse 60. This analysis examines the implied meaning so that it is very relevant to current conditions regarding the principles of Islamic education management in socializing, collecting and sharing zakat to those who are entitled to receive it. This study is enriched with a particular tahlilî interpretation approach to the terminology of zakat contained in the Qur’an Surah al-Taubah verse 60. The results of the zakat distribution education management, constitutional education management principles of zakat management, education management principles for asset cleaning, ideological, doctrinal education management principles, undergraduate education management, and human resource education management.Keywords: Islamic education, management, aims giving, Qur’anic exegesi

    THE IMPACT OF ‘SELFIE’ PHENOMENON AMONG THE MILLENNIAL GENERATION

    Abstract: The phenomenon of selfie among the millennial generation has become a very common thing to do. In the study of contemporary Islamic law, the approach of maqâshid syarî‘ah that seeks to gain mashlahât (benefits) and avoids mafsadât (harms) in human life may be used as a special consideration for dealing with the said phenomenon. This literature-based study was aimed to uncover the said phenomenon by reviewing it using mashlahât and mafsadât approaches. The results of the study indicate that the said approaches have urgency as a means of control against the selfie phenomenon practiced by the current millennial generation. Selfie should only be done if it brings benefits and goodness (mashlahât), otherwise, it must be avoided.Keywords: selfie, millennial generation, Islamic law, mashlahât, mafsadâ

    THE METHOD OF COUNTERACTING RADICALISM IN SCHOOLS: Tracing the Role of Islamic Religious Education Teachers in Learning

    Abstract: The Researches of radicalism have been widely studied, but the methods to counteract in school have not yet been found. This study aims to explore the methods of Islamic religious education teachers in counteracting radical understanding of students in learning. This research used a case study approach that was carried out for two years in high school in Pekanbaru which conducting interviews with teachers, principals, and students. This research produced a method which the teacher counteracts radicalism in learning are dissemination of understanding and the dangers of radicalism. The examples of them are tolerance and living in harmony, oversee Islamic spiritual activities, companion to religious activities, instilling moderate Islamic teachings, transmitter of Islâm kâffah teachings and dialogue about similarity in learning.     CHARACTER EDUCATION IN ISLAMIC EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS: A Study on the Impact of Lecturer Competence at IAIN Lhokseumawe

    Abstract: This study aims to determine the effect of lecturer competence on the character of students at IAIN Lhokseumawe. The research method used is quantitative with a path analysis model. The research subjects were students of IAIN Lhokseumawe. With a total sample of 351 people. Sampling was done using the proportional random sampling technique. Based on the research findings, professional competence has the strongest and most significant impact on character development followed by pedagogical, social, and personality competencies.     THE DISPUTES OF RATÉB SIRIBÈE IN ACEH

    Abstract: This study discusses the foundation of Sufi tenet developed by Shaykh Amran Waly and the communities’ response to the integration of the tenet – the Study Council of Sufism Tawhîd (MPTT) and ratéb siribèe (one-thousand dzikr)–within the northern and eastern Aceh, Indonesia. Qualitative approach was implemented as the observation, in-depth interviews and documentation studies were due to collect the data. MPTT and ratéb siribèe as its integration aim to restore the grandeur of Acehnese people in the past. However, the tenet was responded in many ways by the communities. Some considered that MPTT and ratéb siribèe could act as a means of practicing Sufism, while the others assumed that the teachings developed were deviant since those contain the style of Ibn al-‘Arabî and al-Jîlî Sufism– once considered heretical with the concept of wahdah al-wujûd (unity of existence), which is dissimilar with the Sufism concept–wahdah al-syuhûd (unity of appearance).  Keywords: Amran Waly, MPTT, ratéb siribèe, sufism, tawhî

    RETHINKING THE ROLE OF KIAI LEADERSHIP IN MODERNIZING PESANTREN IN CIANJUR, WEST JAVA

    Abstract: This article seeks the role of the Kiai in the modernization of pesantren in Cianjur, West Java. Taking the cases of Pesantren al-Musyarrofah, Pesantren Darul Falah, Pesantren as-Syuja’i, and Pesantren Darussuada al-Amin, this research uses qualitative methods. The study found that although these Pesantrens played a significant role in da’wah, education, and the development of socio-religious institutions in Cianjur, their existence of experienced ups and downs due to the management system practiced by the pesantren leadership. In addition, it was also implied that modern management combined with the Kiai charisma has become a success factor in the modernization of the pesantren.Keywords: Islamic education, pesantren, kiai, management, leadershi
