Surface mass balance and ice flow of the glaciers Austre Lovénbreen and Pedersenbreen, Svalbard, Arctic
The glaciers Austre Lovénbreen and Pedersenbreen are located at Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard. The surface mass balance and ice flow velocity of both glaciers have been determined from the first year of observations(2005/2006), while the front edge of Austre Lovénbreen was also surveyed. The results are as follows: (1)The net mass balances of Austre Lovénbreen and Pedersenbreen are -0.44 and -0.20 m w. e., the annual ablation is -0.99 and -0.94m w. e.,
and the corresponding equilibrium line altitudes are 478.10 and 494.87 m, respectively
(2)Austre Lovénbreen and Pedersenbreen are characterized as ice flow models of surge-type glaciers in Svalbard. The horizontal vectors of the ice flow velocities are parallel or converge to the central lines of both glaciers, with lower velocities in the lower ablation areas and higher velocities in the middle and upper reaches of the glaciers. The vertical vectors of ice flow velocities show that there is a mass loss in the ablation areas, which reduces with increasing altitude, while there is a mass gain near the equilibrium line of Austre Lovénbreen. (3)The front edge of Austre Lovénbreen receded at an average rate of 21.83 m·a-1, with remarkable variability-a maximum rate of 77.30m·a-1 and a minimum rate of 2.76m·a-1

The Law of Maritime Delimitation and the Russian–Norwegian Maritime Boundary Dispute
This report examines the law on maritime delimitation under the Law of the Sea Convention (LOS Convention) and the maritime boundary dispute between Norway and the Russian Federation in the Barents Sea. Norway and the Russian Federation have been negotiating over the boundaries of their maritime zones in the Barents Sea since the early
1970s. They have failed to agree about the delimitation of the area, except for a relatively small area in the southernmost part of the Barents Sea through the Varanger Fjord Agreement of 1957 and the succeeding Varanger Fjord Agreement of 2007. Norway has argued for the application of a median line delimiting the boundaries, whereas the
Russian Federation argues for the application of sector line, leaving a contentious zone between the opposing views of about 175,000 square kilometers. These legal positions
will be investigated in light of the historical development of the law on maritime delimitation, as well as recent judgments from the International Court of Justice and
other arbitrary tribunals since the entering into force of the UNLOS Convention. In addition, the procedural obligations of Norway and the Russian Federation under the UNLOS Convention towards finding a solution to their maritime boundary dispute are examined
Distribution and reproductive behavior of penguins on Ardley Island and their environmental impact factors
During the 2006/07 Antarctic summer, the species population, distribution and reproductive behavior of penguins in areas near the Great Wall Station were investigated. Five species of penguin were recorded: gentoopenguin(Pygoscelis papua), adelie penguin(P. adeliae), chinstrap penguin(P. antarctica), King penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) and Emperor penguin (A. forsteri). The first three species bred locally, while the other two species were observed occasionally. Ardley Island is one of the most important breeding areas for
penguins. After the breeding season of 2006/07, there were a total of about 17234 penguins and the breeding success rate was 0.40—1.41. Comparing with historical data, changes in penguin species populations and distribution were analyzed, and their relationships with the environment, climate change and human activity were investigated
Exploring Polar Science Strengthening future generations of polar researchers
An information flyer to ‘explore’ polar science is now available for students and early career scientists. The flyer is a shared initiative of the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), the University of the Arctic (UArctic), the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), the International Antarctic Institute (IAI) and IASC. With a simple overview it aims to inform about international opportunities to study the richly diverse and challenging world of the polar regions. It contains information on, and links to international organizations that inform and advise early career scientists on: career development, networking, funding opportunities and communication and outreach. The flyer offers a first step in the advancement and support of a strong future of polar researchers and can be downloaded for print here
Toolik-Arctic Geobotanical Atlas (TAGA)
The Toolik-Arctic Geobotanical Atlas (TAGA) is a web-based multi-scale collection of geobotanical maps and related material. It includes maps at seven different scales, from 1-m² plots to the entire Arctic. The TAGA focuses on research sites at the Toolik Field Station and Imnavait Creek, Alaska, but also covers the Kuparuk River Basin, northern Alaska, Arctic Alaska, and the Circumpolar Arctic. Diverse geobotanical themes include geology, topography landforms, surficial geomorphology, soils, and vegetation. The maps and web site were developed at the Alaska Geobotany Center in collaboration with several other groups at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (see About the TAGA). The Toolik-Arctic Geobotanical Atlas is the outreach and education component of the Greening of the Arctic initiative of the International Polar Year. Educational application of the TAGA in the classroom is a major goal of the initiative through linkage of the project to the University of the Arctic and the UNEP Environment Programme / Grid-Arendal and the Arctic Environmental Atlas

CAFF CBMP Report No. 20 - Arctic Species Trend Index 2010: Tracking Trends in Arctic Wildlife.
The contribution of Arctic wildlife to global biodiversity is substantial. The region supports globally significant populations of birds, mammals and fish.In this report, vertebrate population-abundance data were used to produce an indicator of the trends in Arctic biodiversity over the past 34 years (1970 as the baseline1). This index tracks 965 populations of 306 species, representing 35% of all known vertebrate species found in the Arctic. These observed trends are largely consistent with current predictions regarding the response of Arctic wildlife to climate change and expected increases in previously over-harvested species, and suggest that human-induced changes in Arctic ecosystems are already resulting in winners and losers
