Alkaline phosphatase activity in ornithogenic soils in polar tundra
Phosphatase plays an important role in the microbial liberation of phosphorus in soil systems. In this study, alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) was investigated from tundra ornithogenic soil profiles in Antarctica and Arctic. The organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and phosphorus fractions and pH were also analyzed in these soils. The correlation between APA and soil chemical properties is discussed. In almost all the soil profiles, APA showed the same variation patterns. The maximum APA appeared in the surface layers, and decreased with soil depth. The APA ranged from 1.00 ppm to 1 403.5 ppm with an average of approximately 408.3 ppm. The APA showed a significant positive correlation with TOC (r =0.70, p <0.001), TN (r =0.43, p =0.002), total phosphorus (r =0.39, p <0.05)and inorganic phosphorus (r =0.40, p =0.037), indicating that they were predominant factors affecting APA in the polar tundra soils. In addition, APA showed a significant negative correlation with Cu and Zn concentrations in the soils, indicating that Cu and Zn may inhibit APA. Our results showed that APA could be used as an important indicator for soil fertility in polar tundra ecosystems
Elevation determination of nunataks in the Grove Mountains
A majority of the exposed nunataks located in the Grove Mountains of the Antarctic interior have yet to have had their elevations measured. The elevations of Mason Peak and Wilson Ridge were precisely determined by the Grove Team of the 26th CHINARE in 2010, with Mason Peak turning out to be the highest of the Grove Mountains. Considering that both Mason Peak and Wilson Ridge are difficult to climb because of their cragginess, we first selected three control points on the ice surface near Mason Peak and positioned them with GPS. Thus, accurate elevations of Mason Peak and Wilson Ridge could be calculated from three directions using forward intersection and trigonometric leveling of a high-precision theodolite at the chosen control points. The results provide basic geodetic information that can be referred to as high-precision control points for surveying and mapping in this part of Antarctica. This paper elaborates on the process of measurement and computation of the mountains summit elevations, and also analyzes the details of the principal elements influencing the accuracy of trigonometric leveling, the determination of refraction coefficients k, and observations of structure and distance
Late Quaternary terrigenous sedimentation in the Western Arctic Ocean as exemplified by a sedimentary record from the Alpha Ridge
Terrigenous components in sediment core B84A from the Alpha Ridge, Western Arctic Ocean, have been investigated to reconstruct Mid to Late Quaternary variations in sedimentation, provenance, and related climate changes. The core stratigraphy, evaluated by a combination of variations in Mn content, color cycles, foraminiferal abundance, and lithological correlation, extends back to estimated Marine Isotope Stage 12. Twelve Ice Rafted Detritus (IRD, >250 ¹m) events were identified and interpreted to mostly occur during deglaciation. The Canadian Arctic, which was covered by ice sheets during glacial periods, is suggested to be the major source region. The IRD events likely indicate the collapses of ice sheets, possibly in response to abrupt climate changes. Grain size analysis of B84A indicates sedimentologically sensitive components in core B84A in the 4{9 ¹m and 19{53 ¹m silt subfractions, which are inferred to be mainly transported by currents and sea ice, respectively. Down core variability of these two fractions may indicate changes in ice drift and current strength. In accordance with previous studies in the central Arctic Ocean, the average sedimentation rate in core B84A is about 0.4 cm*ka(-1). Compared with the relatively high sedimentation rates on the margins, sedimentation in the central Arctic Ocean is limited by sea ice cover and the correspondingly low bioproductivity, as well as the long distance from source regions of terrigenous sediment
