Prevalence and Antibiotic Sensitivity of Motile Aeromonas in Dogs
Abstract The present study was carried out to assess the prevalence of motile Aeromonas sp. in the faeces of healthy dogs and to evaluate its susceptibility to some anti-microbial agents. Rectal swabs from 55 domestic dogs were examined for Aeromonas species using alkaline peptone water (pH 8.4) as the enrichment medium and Aeromonas Selective Agar containing 5 mg/l ampicillin as the plating medium. Identification and antibiotic resistance of motile Aeromonas strains was performed using Gram Negative Breakpoint ID panel. After examining these samples, aeromonads were isolated from three (5.45%) dogs. Of those, one was A. sobria, and two were A. caviae. While all isolated strains were sensitive to amikacin, cefoperazone, cefotaxime, cefotetan, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, cefuroxime, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, imipenem, piperacillin, tetracycline, ticarcillin, ticarcillin/clavulanate, tobramycin, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, they were resistant to ampicillin, and ampicillin/sulbactam. In addition, a strain of A. caviae was also resistant to aztreonam. As a result, in the present study, information about the prevalence of Aeromonas in dogs, susceptibility to antibiotics of these microorganisms and its importance for both animal and public health were discussed
McVey M (2010) Synthesis-dependent microhomology-mediated end joining accounts for multiple types of repair junctions
ABSTRACT Ku or DNA ligase 4-independent alternative end joining (alt-EJ) repair of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) frequently correlates with increased junctional microhomology. However, alt-EJ also produces junctions without microhomology (apparent blunt joins), and the exact role of microhomology in both alt-EJ and classical nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ) remains unclear. To better understand the degree to which alt-EJ depends on annealing at pre-existing micro homologies, we examined inaccurate repair of an I-SceI DSB lacking nearby microhomologies of greater than four nucleotides in Drosophila. Lig4 deficiency affected neither frequency nor length of junctional microhomology, but significantly increased insertion frequency. Many insertions appeared to be templated. Based on sequence analysis of repair junctions, we propose a model of synthesis-dependent microhomology-mediated end joining (SD-MMEJ), in which de novo synthesis by an accurate non-processive DNA polymerase creates microhomology. Repair junctions with apparent blunt joins, junctional microhomologies and short indels (deletion with insertion) are often considered to reflect different repair mechanisms. However, a majority of each type had structures consistent with the predictions of our SD-MMEJ model. This suggests that a single underlying mechanism could be responsible for all three repair product types. Genetic analysis indicates that SD-MMEJ is Ku70, Lig4 and Rad51-independent but impaired in mus308 (POLQ) mutants
FROM THE DALTONIST UTILITARIANISM TO THE ETHICS OF RESENTMENT SPEECH ON MORAL CONSCIOUSNESS
Abstract Starting from the vision of F. Nietzsche on the utilitarian man suffering from daltonism and trying to shape the causes of modern moral crisis with some resentful aspects (Max Scheler), we believe that a common constant, subsidiary to all ethical guidelines is the most important component of the self, namely -the moral conscience (J. Piaget, K. Jung). The critique brought to pragmatism promoted by the utilitarian approach (J. Bentham, J. Stuart Mill) in contrast with that typology of resentment (Max Scheler) highlights the relative interpretations and the lack of a device of ethical knowledge. In our view, relativism of these ethical interpretations is that, the three dimensions of analysis are disregarded: the concepts of equality, inequality and otherness. (N. Trade and frictional unemployment in the global economy *
Abstract We develop a multi-country, multi-sector trade model with labor market frictions and equilibrium unemployment. Trade opening leads to a reduction in unemployment if it raises real wages and reallocates labor towards sectors with lower-than-average labor market frictions. We estimate sector-specific labor market frictions from 25 oecd countries and the trade parameters of the model using worldwide trade data. We then quantify the potential unemployment and real wage effects of implementing the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (ttip) or the TransPacific Partnership (tpp), and of eliminating trade imbalances worldwide. The unemployment and real wage effects sometimes work in opposite directions for some countries, such as the us under ttip. We introduce a welfare criterion that accounts for both effects and splits such ties. Accordingly, us welfare is predicted to decrease under ttip
Quality Control Assessment of Conventional Radiology Devices in Iran
Abstract Introduction Quality control (QC) techniques are used in monitoring and maintenance of the components of an x-ray system. QC of radiology devices plays a significant role in reduction of medication dose and optimization of image quality. This study aimed to conduct QC tests on randomly selected radiology devices, installed in diagnostic imaging departments of Iran. Materials and Methods In total, quality control tests were conducted on 51 conventional radiology devices installed in 20 cities of Iran in order to assess the accuracy of peak kilovoltage (kVp), exposure time, exposure linearity and reciprocity, reproducibility of exposure and determination of half-value layer (HVL) using a calibrated Mult-O-Meter. Results In this study, 38.6% of devices had intolerable variance of kVp accuracy. The results of 34.5% of devices were out of the acceptable limits in exposure time accuracy test. In 46.7% and 53.1% of devices, variance was greater than the acceptable range for exposure linearity and exposure reciprocity, respectively. In terms of reproducibility of exposure test, the reproducibility variance and percentage of tube output variations in 19.4% of devices exceeded the limits. Moreover, the thickness of first HVL was lower than the acceptable limit in 14.7% of devices. Conclusion According to the results of this study, there were wide variations in QC test results, perhaps mainly due to the fact that it is not an obligation to implement QC programs in Iran. The most important problems were non-reciprocity of exposure, nonlinearity of exposure with milliampere-second (mAs), kVp and timer inaccuracy. Involvement of medical physicists, radiologists and radiographers in the implementation of QC programs at various stages of development, installation and use of equipment should enable the gradual improvement in equipment performance
Phosphorus Management and Water Quality Problems in Grazingland Ecosystems
Phosphorus management in grazingland ecosystems represents a major challenge of agronomic and environmental importance. Because of the extensive acreage occupied by grazinglands, decisions concerning pasture fertilization and nutrient management in forage-based livestock systems are crucial to both farmers and regulatory agencies. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the literature relevant to pasture P fertilization and the potential impacts on water quality. There continue to be uncertainties regarding interrelationships between pasture management and water quality issues. Despite the extensive body of literature on nutrient transport from grazinglands, limited information is available on the relationships between land use, transport potential, water management, and climatic conditions affecting nutrient losses at a watershed scale. As agriculture continues to modernize and intensify, public concerns about the impacts of plant nutrients on environmental quality will likely increase. Managing water quality protection and profitable agriculture will be a major challenge for the next generations
Real-time traveler information for optimal adaptive routing in stochastic time-dependent networks
Abstract Real-time information can enable travelers to adapt to changing traffic conditions and make better routing decisions in uncertain networks. In this paper, a generic description of realtime online information is provided based on three schemes using partial online information and one scheme with no online information. A theoretical analysis shows that more error-free information is always better than (or at least as good as) less information for optimal adaptive routing in flow-independent networks. A heuristic algorithm is designed for the optimal adaptive routing problem for all the four information schemes, based on a set of necessary conditions for optimality. The effectiveness of the heuristic algorithm is shown to be satisfactory over the tested random networks. This study is of interest for traveler information system evaluation and design
