    Embodying Narrative Through Mobile Play

    Abstract This case study outlines a methodology for adapting digital games from literature. The process maps key narrative events to human computer interactions via game verbs. Game verbs are distinct player actions that help the player accomplish their in-game goal. Through the use of tightly coupled narrative events and game verbs, the game engenders the spirit of Edgar Allen Poe's short story The Tell Tale Heart. Like the story's protagonist, players move from controlled actions to erratic behavior as they manipulate their device. Players are required to propel the narrative through accelerometer and touch-based actions. The resulting game's physicality is designed to match the narrative's drive toward madness

    Bladder cancer has increased incidence during last decades. For those patients with nonmuscle involved tumors, noninvasive diagnosis test and surveillance methods must be designed to avoid current cystoscopies that nowadays are done regularly in a lot of patients. Novel urine biomarkers have been developed during last years. Telomerase is important in cancer biology, improving the division capacity of cancer cells. Even urinary telomerase could be a potentially useful urinary tumor marker; its use for diagnosis of asymptomatic and symptomatic patients or its impact during surveillance is still unknown. Moreover, there will need to be uniformity and standardization in the assays before it can become useful in clinical practice. It does not seem to exist a real difference between the most classical assays for the detection of urine telomerase (TRAP and hTERT). However, the new detection methods with modified TeloTAGGG telomerase or with gold nanoparticles must also be taken into consideration for the correct development of this diagnosis method. Maybe the target population would be the high-risk groups within screening programs. To date there is no enough evidence to use it alone and to eliminate cystoscopies from the diagnosis and surveillance of these patients. The combination with cytology or FISH is still preferred

    SUMMARY Since the early 1980s land administration system projects have revolved around delivering and formalizing "old type" tenures derived from stable legal orders and institutional recognition. Land administration designs and conventional tenure typologies are often engineered to suit assimilation of land arrangements into formal property markets. However, in developing countries in Southeast Asia the majority of the rural poor rely on systems of access to land sourced in social practice not law or government. Formalising these socially derived access modes by using familiar land administration tools of security of tenure, land rights, spatial identification and institutionalisation of credit systems is now seen as problematic, especially in the context of deeply entrenched poverty. Innovations in project designs are slowly responding to research results emerging from sustainable development objectives and changes to land policy. The first section of this paper reviews land policy and land administration theories in the context of providing a primary poverty reduction strategy over the past three decades. It is then argued that land administration reform for the rural poor must be designed in the context of the totality of arrangements and social practices relating to local land, labour and product markets. To redress the narrow focus on 'titling' conventional tenure typologies, land administration, management or reform project designs should include: − reappraisal of rural tenures to focus on local tenure practices relating to use of resources (not merely land), and − a methodology for integrating accepted and useful tenure practices into formal structures, principally by cataloguing and understanding the existing systems, creating formal systems with inherent flexibility, and allowing access to formalisation according to local demands through staged processes

    ABSTRACT The main objectives of a handoff procedure are, first, to minimize the number of link handoff processing delay by correct choice of target BS/AP with speedy execution. This minimizes the probability of connection interruptions and reduces the switching load. If the handoff is not fast enough, the qualit experiences degradations. A handoff should be evaluated as to its impact on the mobile to network connection. In this paper we have discussed the simulation outline and designed simulation model for the research undertaken. The flow chart indicated is generic one. We have added only case specific condition for the performance evaluation for the algorithm in consideration

    ,K +1 Ca +2 , Mg +2 have been studied for their concentration in the ground water Samples. Statistical study has been carried out by calculating the correlation coefficient between different parameters and applied for checking their significance. The observed values of physico-chemical parameters of water samples were compared with standard values recommended by WHO. The study revealed that all the physico-chemical parameters are well above the permissible limits suggested by WHO and USEPA for drinking water. Proper treatment methods are suggested for these ground water samples to be used for the drinking purpose; however they can be used for irrigation purpose

    Abstract In the wake of the art exhibition associated to the Banff 2009 Bridges conference where I showed my 'Chartres Laborange', Eva Knoll suggested I try making other spheres sporting labyrinth designs of hers such as those I referenced in my paper 'Amazing Labyrinths, Further Developments', at the same conference. A first result was shown off-exhibit at Pécs 2010, and I give an account on how it was reached, along with another development with new 'evident' insight (fun red Ariadne thread in this paper , when read on the CD !) But before that, I present new results involuntarily induced by Carlo Séquin, based on the St. Omer labyrinth; also, as my Banff Paper lacked images, I show two kinds of Saffron Walden grapefruit labyrinths inspired by discussions with John Sharp

    Introduction. This article reviews current management strategies for DCIS in the context of recent randomised trials, including the role of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB), adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) and endocrine treatment. Methods. Literature review facilitated by Medline, PubMed, Embase and Cochrane databases. Results. DCIS should be managed in the context of a multidisciplinary team. Local control depends upon clear surgical margins (at least 2 mm is generally acceptable). SLNB is not routine, but can be considered in patients undergoing mastectomy (Mx) with risk factors for occult invasion. RT following BCS significantly reduces local recurrence (LR), particularly in those at high-risk. There remains a lack of level-1 evidence supporting omission of adjuvant RT in selected low-risk cases. Large, multi-centric or recurrent lesions should be treated by Mx and immediate reconstruction should be discussed. Adjuvant hormonal treatment may reduce the risk of LR in selected cases with hormone sensitive disease. Conclusion. Further research is required to determine the role of new RT regimes and endocrine therapies. Biological profiling and molecular analysis represent an opportunity to improve our understanding of tumour biology in DCIS to rationalise treatment. Reliable identification of low-risk lesions could allow treatment to be less radical

    Abstract: This paper analyses the Ford Foundation's 1957 to 1961 intellectual exchange program in Poland. Emerging in the novel context of Washington's emphasis on cultural diplomacy and Warsaw's exceptional position in the East Bloc following October 1956, the Foundation's program was the earliest complex scholarly initiative by a US organization aimed at Europeans under Communist rule. Consequently, for a brief window of time, the Foundation was able to operate an unprecedentedly open exchange under uniquely liberal terms. The program's genesis and operations will be explained, as well as the reasons for its abrupt suspension and its long-term implications. In particular, I will argue that through the program, the Foundation played a significant role in rebuilding and shaping the social sciences in post-Stalinist Poland

    ABSTRACT. We rigorously derive multi-pulse interaction laws for the semi-strong interactions in a family of singularly-perturbed and weaklydamped reaction-diffusion systems in one space dimension. Most significantly, we show the existence of a manifold of quasi-steady N-pulse solutions and identify a "normal-hyperbolicity" condition which balances the asymptotic weakness of the linear damping against the algebraic evolution rate of the multi-pulses. Our main result is the adiabatic stability of the manifolds subject to this normal hyperbolicity condition. More specifically, the spectrum of the linearization about a fixed N-pulse configuration contains an essential spectrum that is asymptotically close to the origin, as well as semi-strong eigenvalues which move at leading order as the pulse positions evolve. We characterize the semistrong eigenvalues in terms of the spectrum of an explicit N ×N matrix, and rigorously bound the error between the N-pulse manifold and the evolution of the full system, in a polynomially weighted space, so long as the semi-strong spectrum remains strictly in the left-half complex plane, and the essential spectrum is not too close to the origin
