    The Economic Significance of Bovine Gastrointestinal Nematode Parasitism in North Queensland

    Summary The effect of nematode parasitism was assessed by comparing weight gains of levamisole-treated and nontreated weaners on thirteen beef and dairy properties chosen to represent the major environments in north Queensland. In dry coastal and inland areas (with a mean annual rainfall less than 1000 mm and a dry autumn, winter and spring) there were no differences in weight gain between treated and nontreated animals. Such areas carry more than 90 per cent of cattle reared in north Queensland. In wetter coastal areas, on the Eungella and the Atherton Tablelands and on irrigated swampy pastures, however, there were mean differences of up to 50 kg in favour of animals treated each three weeks for the first five to eight months after weaning, over untreated animals. It was also estimated that, on the wet coast, up to 6.5 per cent of untreated steers would die or become chronically emaciated from nematode parasitism. Estimates of likely death losses of untreated weaner bulls on irrigated pasture were 50 per cent. Weaner bulls were more severely affected than steers which in turn were generally more severely affected than heifers. A recommendation for control using three or four doses of anthelmintic at intervals of two months, the first being administered two months after weaning, was discussed

    In this paper, we study how mines change local societies in the Nordic countries with a particular focus on the Arctic region. Our study is based on register data at the municipality level from Norway, Sweden, and Finland for the period 1986 to 2013. The applied econometric model allows for identification of the total socioeconomic effects that occur throughout the mine's life cycle. We find positive effects on local employment and reductions in unemployment and the number of people outside the labor force when a mine is opening up. We also detect significant shifts in the industry structure in the period around a mine opening and we find that mines attract young people and reduce crime rates. We do not find any effects on the local population size, the gender or education compositions, or fertility rates. JEL Classification: J2, J15, O1

    The Why and How of Firm-NGO Collaborations Working Papers in Information Systems and Business Administration

    Abstract This paper studies the motivation, success factors and threats of collaborations between NGOs and firms. It builds up on existing literature on collaborations between firms and examines whether collaboration between NGOs and privateowned companies are different from collaborations between firms. Although there are many similar aspects, some differences can be made up. First, firms collaborate with NGOs mainly to get access to the reputation and legitimacy of an NGO. In contrast, NGOs enter a collaboration with a corporate partner to advance its managerial skills and receive financial resources. Second, firms and NGOs measure the performance and success of a firm-NGO relationship differently. While firms primarily seek financial success, NGOs pursue more ideological goals and offer intangible assets such as reputation and authenticity that are hard to quantify. Third, an NGO suffers stronger if a partner does not behave in a way that fits to the partnership and damages the reputation and legitimacy of the NGO. This is problematic for NGOs, as reputation and legitimacy are their key resources.

    In this paper, by using the integral bifurcation method, we studied the Kudryashov-Sinelshchikov equation. In the special parametric conditions, some singular and nonsingular exact traveling wave solutions, such as periodic cusp-wave solutions, periodic loop-wave solutions, smooth loop-soliton solutions, smooth solitary wave solutions, periodic double wave solutions, periodic compacton solutions, and nonsmooth peakon solutions are obtained. Further more, the dynamic behaviors of these exact traveling wave solutions are investigated. It is found that the waveforms of some traveling wave solutions vary with the changes of parameters

    Shock Absorbing Function Study on Denucleated Intervertebral Disc with or without Hydrogel Injection through Static and Dynamic Biomechanical Tests In Vitro

    Hydrogel injection has been recently proposed as a novel therapy for disc degenerative diseases, with the potential to restore the spine motion and the intervertebral disc height. However, it remains unknown whether the new technique could also maintain the shock absorbing property of the treated intervertebral disc. In this study, 18 porcine lumbar bone-disc-bone specimens were collected and randomly divided into three groups: the normal with intact intervertebral discs, the mimic for the injection of disulfide cross-linked hyaluronan hydrogels following discectomy, and the control disc with discectomy only. In the static compression test, specimens in the mimic group exhibited displacements similar to those in the normal discs, whereas the control group showed a significantly larger displacement range in the first two steps ( < 0.05). With the frequency increasing, all specimens generally displayed an increasing storage modulus, decreasing loss modulus, and tan . At any frequency point, the control group exhibited the largest value in all the three parameters among three groups while the normal group was the lowest, with the mimic group being mostly close to the normal group. Therefore, the hydrogel injection into the intervertebral discs greatly restored their shock absorbing function, suggesting that the technique could serve as an effective approach to maintaining biomechanical properties of the degenerative intervertebral disc

    Correlation of anisotropic cell behaviors with topographic aspect ratio

    a b s t r a c t In this study, we have used nanoimprinting to create a range of micro-and nanoscale gratings, or their combination, in bulk polystyrene plates to investigate anisotropic cell behaviors of human dermal fibroblasts with respect to the aspect ratio (depth/width) of gratings. The depth and width of the polystyrene gratings both show strong effects individually on cell alignment and elongation that are qualitatively similar to the results of other studies. However, consistent quantitative comparison of these individual parameters with different studies is complicated by the diversity of combinations of width and depth that have been tested. Instead, the aspect ratio of the gratings as a unified description of grating topography is a more consistent parameter to interpret topographic dependence of cell morphology. Both cell alignment and elongation increase with increasing aspect ratio, and even a shallow grating (aspect ratio of w0.05) is sufficient to induce 80% cell alignment. Re-plotting data recently published by other groups vs. aspect ratio shows a similar dependence, despite differences in cell types and surface structures. This consistency indicates that aspect ratio is a general factor to characterize cell behaviors. The relationship of cell elongation and alignment with topographic aspect ratio is interpreted in terms of the theory of contact guidance. This model provides simplicity and flexibility in geometry design for devices and materials that interface with cells. Published by Elsevier Ltd

    ABSTRACT National maize productivity is very low in Nepal. Increase of the productivity is only possible through growing high grain yielding single cross hybrid maize cultivar. So, development and evaluation of maize hybrids are principal steps to select high grain yielding and superior hybrid for cultivar. For it, fifteen newly bred single cross hybrids of yellow maize were examined from the standpoint of chlorophyll (chl) dynamics and their effects on grain yield. the kernels more efficiently from the e3 leaf. It is not necessary that maize hybrids must constantly maintain soluble proteins and chl conc during most of early to mid-grain filling duration for high grain yield. Instead, diagnostic decline of the soluble protein and chl conc during early to mid-grain filling also accelerate grain filling phenomena
