Mach Effects and Rapid Spacetime Transport
Abstract. Over the past several years Mach effects have been explored as a possible source of propellantless propulsion. Until June of 2006 this work was done at CSUF using a Unimeasure U-80 position sensor fitted with a diaphragm spring, making it a thrust sensor. This work suggested that thrusts on the order of 100 | xN could be produced in laboratory conditions with devices employing capacitors enclosed in coils of wire suitably energized -Mach Lorentz thrusters (MLTs). As a check on this work, two devices tested at CSUF were sent to Nembo Buldrini at the Austrian Research Center (ARC) in Seibersdorf for testing using a thrust balance designed and built there to test small thrust devices. Results obtained by Buldrini in tests in December, 2005 and February 2006 suggested that any thrusts that might be present were smaller by a factor of about 0.3 or less than those obtained at CSUF. This suggested that either the thrust signals seen at CSUF were spurious, or that the U-80 was markedly more sensitive to very small thrusts than simple linear scaling from calibration conditions indicated should be the case. To explore these possibilities, Thomas Mahood designed and built an approximate replica of the ARC thrust balance -which he dubbed the "ARC Lite" thrust balanceso that Buldrini's results could be checked at CSUF. Various technical problems with the balance have been addressed since the summer of 2006. Preliminary results obtained with the ARC Lite balance were reported at STAIF2007. Here, the refmed version of the balance is described and results obtained with MLTs optimized for operation in special circumstances are reported. Those results suggest that MLTs may well make viable thrusters for a variety space applications. More importantly, however, if MLTs actually work, that means that the Mach effect mass fluctuation equation is essentially correct. Since that equation contains a term that is always negative -that is, that predicts an inducible transient negative mass -this technology holds out the promise of making sufficient negative mass to create practical wormholes, stargates, and warp drives
ЯЗЫКОВЫЕ ВЕРСИИ (АНГЛИЙСКАЯ И РУССКАЯ) ПОЛИТИЧЕСКОГО НОВОСТНОГО БЛОКА ENGLISH AND RUSSIAN VERSIONS OF A POLITICAL NEWS ITEM
Статья посвящена сопоставительному содержательно-лингвистическому анализу языковых версий политических новостных блоков. Рассмотрен материал телевизионного канала «Euronews» на двух языках (английском и русском) на тему о политическом конфликте в Италии (сопроводительный текст видеоролика продолжительностью 1 мин). Существуют многочисленные методы изучения медиатекстов: методы лингви-стического анализа, метод контент-анализа, или анализа содержания, метод дискурсивного анализа, метод критической лингвистики (или риторической критики), метод когнитивного анализа, метод лингвокультуро-логического анализа. В настоящей статье ставится задача комплексного сопоставительного анализа полити-ческих новостных блоков, составленных на различных языках, с акцентом на структурно-содержательный аспект такого сопоставления. Цель такого анализа состоит в выявлении общности и различий между двумя языковыми версиями новостного блока с точки зрения объема, структуры и характера передаваемого реци-пиенту содержания. There are numerous methods for the study of media texts: methods of linguistic analysis, the method of content analysis, or analysis of the content, the method of discourse analysis, method of critical linguistics (or rhetorical criticism), the method of cognitive analysis, the method of linguistic-cultural analysis. This article seeks comprehensive comparative analysis of a political news blocks, composed in different languages, with an emphasis on structural and content aspect of a such comparison. The purpose of this analysis is to identify the similarities and differences between the two language versions of news block in terms of size, structure and nature of the recipient of the transmitted content. Keywords: news item, comparative analysis С точки зрения лингвистики объек-том теории текста являются все коммуни-кативные единицы, характеризующиеся цельностью, связностью и относительной завершенностью. Трудности, связанные с выработкой определенной методики рабо-ты с текстом, являются, без сомнения, объ-ективными и объясняются многоаспектной природой этого сложного (лингвистическо-го, психологического, социального, культу-рологического) феномена. Поэтому прежде чем говорить о комплексном анализе текста следует определить принципы теоретиче-ского описания отдельных его аспектов. В данной статье мы остановимся на прин-ципах, которые могут быть положены в ос-нову логико-содержательного анализа ме-диатекстов. Тексты массовой информации изуча-ются сегодня с точки зрения самых разных дисциплин -лингвистики, социологии, психологии, стилистики, культурологии, политологии, межкультурной коммуника-ции. Интеграция различных методов ана-лиза текстов массовой информации в рам-ках медиалингвистики позволяет получить объёмное комплексное представление о ре-альных свойствах медиаречи, её стилисти-ке, особенностях воздействия на индиви-дуальное и массовое сознание, о способах взаимодействия вербального и медийного уровней, об идеологической модально-сти, о роли их культурно значимых ком-понентов. Существуют многочисленные методы изучения медиатекстов [1, с. 30]: 1. Методы лингвистического анализа, позволяющие выявить базовые свойства и характеристики текста на различных язы-ковых уровнях: лексико-семантическом, синтагматическом, стилистическом и др. 2. Метод контент-анализа, или анализа содержания, основанный на статистиче-ском подсчёте специально выбранных тек-стовых единиц. 3. Метод дискурсивного анализа, осно-ванный на концепции дискурса и позволя-ющий проследить взаимосвязь между язы-ковой и экстралингвистической стороной текста. 4. CULTURE, MEDIA & FILM | CRITICAL ESSAY The Times and General Motors: What went wrong?
Abstract: In 2014 General Motors Company (GM) recalled more than 2.6 million automobiles to replace a defective ignition switch that had been implicated in more than a dozen deaths. Despite early problems with the switch, it took GM almost 11 years to initiate the recall. The recall announcement led to a firestorm of media criticism. Much of that criticism, however, was badly distorted. I concentrate on The New York Times' coverage because it is a trusted news source, and because it devoted substantial resources to the story. Problems with The Times' coverage were likely magnified in less reliable media outlets. I describe what we know about the switch problem and General Motors' attempts to solve it, and try to explain the forces-mainly psychological-that warped The Times reporting. These forces-love of a story with heroes, villains, and a moral dimension; willingness to view group human activity on the model of individual human activity; overly simple theories of human motivation; a tendency to attribute beliefs and desires to organizations-are not unique to The Times or this particular story, and can thus be expected to affect media reports of other corporate decision-making
Behavior of simetryn and thiobencarb in rice paddy lysimeters and the effect of excess water storage depth in controlling herbicide run-off
Eight small-scale lysimeters with different excess water storage depths (EWSDs) were used to investigate the behavior of two herbicides, simetryn and thiobencarb, under paddy conditions. The concentration of simetryn dissipated similarly in all the lysimeters, while the thiobencarb concentration varied significantly because thiobencarb can adsorb onto the dissolved organic matter in a manure slurry, which was applied to six of the lysimeters.The herbicide losses (the percentage of the applied mass) from the lysimeters were reversely proportional with the EWSD.The correlation was stronger for simetryn than for thiobencarb.An appropriate EWSD is required to effectively prevent herbicide run-off from the paddy field, especially when a rainfall event occurs soon after herbicide application

Huang et al.: Force-Equilibrium-Based Finite Displacement Methods Using Circular Failure Surfaces SLOPE DISPLACEMENT ANALYSES USING FORCE EQUILIBRI- UM-BASED FINITE DISPLACEMENT METHOD AND CIRCULAR FAILURE SURFACE
ABSTRACT Conventional methods of slope stability provide a constant value for the safety factor of the slope, without information of slope displacements and possible variations of safety margins along the potential failure surface. To overcome this shortcoming, a force-equilibrium-based finite displacement method (FFDM) is proposed. Two well known slice methods for circular failure surfaces, namely, the simplified Bishop's and Fellenius' methods are considered in the proposed procedure. The FFDM takes into account all limit equilibrium requirements originally adopted in the slice method with additional displacement compatibility functions and hyperbolic shear stress-displacement relationships. The FFDM provides incremental slope displacements induced by internal or external stress (or safety status) variations. The FFDM also provides local stress-based and displacement-based safety factors as parts of analytical outputs. A monitored highway slope during a rainstorm is used in a preliminary verification of FFDM. Results of the comparative study shows that the slope displacements computed using Fellenius' approach tend to be overconservative, regardless of different considerations on the influence of groundwater pressures, due partially to its less realistic assumption on the inter-slice forces. The simplified Bishop's method provides acceptable analytical slope displacement results comparable with that measured for the studied slope caused by an elevated groundwater, and is recommended for further applications
ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to evaluate that approach of Karamanoglu Mehmet Bey University Physical Education Sports High school and Nursing students to anatomy lesson. Study which is descriptive is carried out in Karamanoglu Mehmet Bey University 2008-09 academic year during fall. The type of descriptive study was made in Karamanoglu University Education Mehmetbey in the fall semester in the 2008-2009 school year. Totally 272 students studying in the first, second, third and fourth classes in nursing and physical education and sports have constituted the universe of research. While the datum's were being collected, age and sex from sociademographic datum's were put into practice for students, for measurement devotion to anatomy lesson, negative and positive behaviors which are performed during anatomy lessons, prejudice for anatomy lesson and the equal periodic liker anatomy attitude criterion in which the belief for necessity of anatomy lesson is discussed were put into practice. While analyzing the datum's number percent distribution and T test were used. Students whose branches is nursing (X= 78.94) are more positive than the students whose branch is physical education and sport teaching (X=67.35) in the view of attitude to anatomy lesson. Students' attitude to anatomy lesson has a difference according to students' different branch. In this research, nursing students have higher attitude to anatomy lesson than Physical Education Sports High school students. This difference may be derived from requirement to anatomy lesson of two distinct professions
