Effect of Polarization Fatigue on Harvesting Energy Using Pyroelectric Materials
The phenomenon of polarization fatigue in ferroelectric materials is defined and the effect of this phenomenon on harvested energy using these materials has been studied. In order to illustrate this effect, the harvested energy using PZN-4.5PT single crystal was compared in two cases of fatigued and nonfatigued samples. CSEQ-SIMULATOR: A DATA SIMULATOR FOR CLIP-SEQ EXPERIMENTS
CLIP-Seq protocols such as PAR-CLIP, HITS-CLIP or iCLIP allow a genome-wide analysis of protein-RNA interactions. For the processing of the resulting short read data, various tools are utilized. Some of these tools were specifically developed for CLIP-Seq data, whereas others were designed for the analysis of RNA-Seq data. To this date, however, it has not been assessed which of the available tools are most appropriate for the analysis of CLIP-Seq data. This is because an experimental gold standard dataset on which methods can be accessed and compared, is still not available. To address this lack of a gold-standard dataset, we here present Cseq-Simulator, a simulator for PAR-CLIP, HITS-CLIP and iCLIP-data. This simulator can be applied to generate realistic datasets that can serve as surrogates for experimental gold standard dataset. In this work, we also show how Cseq-Simulator can be used to perform a comparison of steps of typical CLIP-Seq analysis pipelines, such as the read alignment or the peak calling. These comparisons show which tools are useful in different settings and also allow identifying pitfalls in the data analysis

earthquake in Haiti, Project Medishare and the University of Miami organized, built, and staffed a 200-bed field hospital (the University of Miami Hospital in Haiti [UMHH]) on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince. We describe the operational challenges of providing a safe environment at the UMHH. Furthermore, we compared how these issues were addressed at this ad hoc hospital with how they were addressed at the field hospital of the Israel Defense Force, a fully deployable hospital with an organization fine-tuned as a result of prior disaster situations, also in Haiti. On January 12, 2010, a series of earthquakes struck Haiti around the capital city of Port-au-Prince, with the strongest tremor reported at 7 on the Richter scale. It was estimated that 220,000 persons died, more than 300,000 were wounded, and more than half a million lost their homes. 1 Haiti is considered to be the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. 2 Before the earthquake, less than half of the 9.7 million Haitian population had clean water, and 83% did not have access to adequate sanitation facilities. The damage and loss of life had a catastrophic impact on the function of the government, healthcare facilities, and rudimentary utilities in Haiti. 2 Within a week of the earthquake, Project Medishare (a nongovernmental organization active in Port-au-Prince before the earthquake) and the University of Miami organized and erected a 200-bed field hospital (the University of Miami Hospital in Haiti [UMHH]), on the grounds of the Port-auPrince airport. The UMHH replaced the provisional hospital that was erected immediately after the earthquake and that was recently described elsewhere. 3 All healthcare workers were volunteer personnel who faced diverse infectious diseasesrelated issues, including the management of wounds from initial trauma, the diagnosis of infectious diseases without laboratory resources, and the development of strategies for the early control and prevention of the spread of infectious diseases in a poor sanitary environment. field hospitals Field hospitals in Haiti varied in size and design. Some of them consisted of a series of small tents, each one providing a specific type of care. Others were either structured as large tents or organized within buildings that previously functioned as hospitals, churches, or schools. Air-conditioning units constituted luxury items to which only a few had access. In additional, the lack of running water was a common problem in most of these makeshift healthcare centers. The UMHH consisted of 4 large tents: 2 tents were patientcare wards, 1 tent served as lodging for healthcare workers
The Economic Content of Interest Rates, Monetary Policy and Time-Varying Risk Premia
Abstract The term structure of interest rates is a rich source of economic information and thus can be a powerful tool for policy making. However, this information is difficult to extract given its dependence on the actual policy regime and the existence of time-varying term premia. This paper provides an analysis of the economic content of interest rates when term premia vary over time and monetary policy is optimal. The analysis is complemented with a potentially welfare-improving application for policy making: the formulation of optimal policy rules based on term-structure information. The analysis is conducted for policies with high or low weights on inflation stabilization. It shows that a high inflation weight increases the compensation for real risks in the term structure. As a result, forward rates are less informative about expected future monetary policy, and the term spreads and short-term rate predict better real economic activity and inflation, respectively. In addition, the optimal responses in an interest-rate rule to the lagged short-rate and term spreads decline

Subsequently, immobilization/encapsulation applications in the food industry aiming at the prolongation of cell viability are described together with an evaluation of their potential future impact, which is also highlighted and assessed

Design considerations when adopting the OpenEdx MOOC 1 platform in campus--based courses: A comparative case study
Abstract 20 Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are an innovation in higher education 21 (Grajek, 2014). Faculty has challenges in designing MOOCs since most have mainly 22 experience in developing campus-based courses. As MOOC platform are introduced 23 in campus-based courses, it is important to investigate how this learning environment 24 impacts on the design of MOOCs in relation to online environments. The aim of this 25 study was therefore to investigate the influence of variations in the learning 26 environment on the design of MOOCs. 27 A comparative case study approach was chosen to investigate two types of learning 28 environments. The focus was on the similarities, differences and trends. The data 29 collection was performed using semi-structured interviews. The answers were 30 analyzed using a qualitative content analysis. 31 The pedagogical approach and learning content were the components that were 32 mostly influenced. The targeted learners and the assessment of the learning activities 33 were partly influenced. The learning environment didn't impact on the course 34 description, intended learning outcomes and aimed competencies. 35 The study contributed to knowledge on the influence of the learning environment on 36 the design of MOOCs. Increasing understanding of the learning environment among 37 faculty will contribute to a better design, implementation and evaluation of MOOCs 38 and ultimately for the students' benefit. 39 4

Abstract: Drawing on the distinction between envy and signaling effects in income comparison, this paper uses 307,465 observations for subjective well-being and its covariates from Germany, 1990Germany, -2009, to study whether the nature of income comparison has changed in the process of economic development, and how such changes are related to changes in the nature of income formation. By conceptualizing a person's comparison income as the income predicted by an earnings equation, we find that, while in 1990-1999 envy has been the dominant concern in West Germany and signaling the dominant factor in East Germany, income comparison was non-existing in 2000-2009. We also find that the earnings equation reflects people's ability more accurately in the second than in the first period. Together, these findings suggest that comparing one's income with people of the same ability is important only when ability is insufficiently reflected in own income. Terms of use: Documents i
