2010. A study of Lantana camara linn aromatic oil as an antibacterial agent

    No full text
ABSTRACT The essential oil of Lantana camara Linn. (Verbenaceae) a common weed in Western region of Orissa was tested against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus sp the strains were procured from Deptt. Of Microbiology, Burla, Sambalpur. Attempts have been made to quantitate the antibacterial activity by determining the MIC. Efforts were made to study the activity of essential oil on bacterial cells. In addition to this a in-vivo study was done on guinea pigs regarding wound healing activity of Lantana oil

Benefits of Rainwater Utilization-The Applications on Flood Mitigation, Water Harvesting and Gutter Snipe Design

Abstract In order to achieve the purposes of environ mental protection, such as flood control, sustainable development on water utilizat ion and increasing of water demand with the decreasing of conservative water resources, to find new supplementary water resources and effective utilization those resource becomes a very significant topic. Rainwater, which is caught by reservoir at upstream while flowing down into sea through the middle or downstream, a best blessed gift and it has no water right problem without falling down the ground. Considering fro m the view point of environ mental, econo mic, and social impacts, the utilization on water harvesting and flood mit igation with the benefit-cost ratio analysis and the effective function of gutter snipe design keeping water clean evoke us to study in paying much attention. In this study, high B/C ratio and wide application are presented

Towards an Integrated Multimodal Transportation Dashboard

    No full text
Abstract-Many sophisticated Information Systems (IS) focusing on management and supervision problems in the transportation arena exist in the contemporary world. Road traffic management systems, rail traffic management systems and many more are here to face everyday challenges. However, in spite of a huge progress in this area, systems that combine multiple transport modes for management purposes are a very few. This article proposes a solution for the monitoring of the operational state of multimodal transportation systems in a single dashboard. The experimental solution is applied to the transport network of the city of Porto, Portugal, as a case study. The problem includes such major components as (1) input information and its sources, (2) model (metrics, calculation algorithms) and (3) visualization metaphors. A proposed solution is a dashboard that provides a comprehensive view on the operational state, or Level of Service (LOS), of transportation systems of different types. Such a system is expected to become an essential tool for transport system monitoring and management, supplying the necessary information for strategic and emergency planning to the authorities and other decision makers in the sector

Interplay of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov and Vortex states in two-dimensional Superconductors

Abstract Clean superconductors with weakly coupled conducting planes have been suggested as promising candidates for observing the Fulde-FerrellLarkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. We consider here a layered superconductor in a magnetic field of arbitrary orientation with respect to the conducting plane. In this case there is competition of Pauli spin-pair-breaking effects, favoring the FFLO state, and orbital-pairbreaking effects, favouring the Abrikosov vortex state. In previous work, phase transitions to phases with pairing in Landau levels with quantum numbers n > 0 have been predicted. Here, we calculate the actual structure of the stable states below H c2 by minimizing the free energy. We find new order parameter structures differing from both the traditional Abrikosov and FFLO solutions. These include two-dimensional periodic structures with several zeros of the order parameter, as well as quasi-one-dimensional structures consisting of vortex chains separated by FFLO domains. We discuss the limit of high n, where some interesting but yet unsolved questions appear

On the variational principle for generalized Gibbs measures Citation for published version (APA): ON THE VARIATIONAL PRINCIPLE FOR GENERALIZED GIBBS MEASURES

    No full text
Abstract. We present a novel approach to establishing the variational principle for Gibbs and generalized (weak and almost) Gibbs states. Limitations of a thermodynamic formalism for generalized Gibbs states will be discussed. A new class of intuitively Gibbs measures is introduced, and a typical example is studied. Finally, we present a new example of a non-Gibbsian measure arising from an industrial application

137-141 Intravenous Sufentanil and Morphine for Post-Cardiac Surgery Pain Relief Using Patient-Controlled Analgesia (Pca) Device: A Randomized Double-Blind Clinical Trial

ABSTRACT Background: Selection of the best analgesic technique in patients undergoing major surgeries can result in lower morbidity and satisfactory postoperative pain relief. In the present study, we tried to compare the effect of morphine and sufentanil on postoperative pain severity and hemodynamic changes by using patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) device in patients who were candidate for coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG). Methodology: It was a randomized double-blinded clinical trial in which 120 patients aged 30-65 years, ASA physical status I-III, candidate for CABG in Shahid Rajaee hospital in Tehran were included. Before anesthesia, patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups to receive sufentanil (n=40), morphine (n=40) or normal saline (n=40). After tracheal extubation at intensive care unit, PCA was started by, sufentanil 4mg for the first group, morphine 2mg for the second group and normal saline, at same volume for the third group, intravenously with 10 minute lockout interval. Postoperative pain was evaluated by VAS scale, 1, 6, 12, 18 and 24 hours after extubation and systolic blood pressure, arterial oxygen saturation, PCO 2 and PO 2 were recorded 24 hours after extubation. Results: VAS scores at rest revealed significantly less pain for patients in sufentanil and morphine groups than normal saline group, throughout the twenty-four hours after operation (P<0.001). However, there were no significant differences in the means of VAS scores between sufentanil and morphine groups. Among studied hemodynamic parameters, only systolic blood pressure was reduced more in morphine than sufentanil group (P<0.001). Conclusion: After CABG surgery, administration of intravenous sufentanil and morphine using PCA can lead to similar reduction of postoperative pain severity

An iPadä-based picture and video activity schedule increases community shopping skills of a young adult with autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the iPad 2ä with Book Creatorä software to provide visual cues and video prompting to teach shopping skills in the community to a young adult with an autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability. Methods: A multiple probe across settings design was used to assess effects of the intervention on the participant's independence with following a shopping list in a grocery store across three community locations. Results: Visual cues and video prompting substantially increased the participant's shopping skills within two of the three community locations, skill increases maintained after the intervention was withdrawn, and shopping skills generalized to two untaught shopping items. Social validity surveys suggested that the participant's parent and staff favorably viewed the goals, procedures, and outcomes of intervention. Conclusions: The iPad 2ä with Book Creatorä software may be an effective way to teach independent shopping skills in the community; additional replications are needed
