Microscopic derivation of hydrodynamic transport across various systems
Applications of hydrodynamics can be found in virtually all branches of modern physics. While the name of the field betrays that its origins lie in the study of water motion, over time, hydrodynamics – also known as fluid mechanics – has come to be understood as something much broader: a universal framework for studying transport in many-body systems near equilibrium. Indeed, developing a hydrodynamic description usually requires only knowledge of the equilibrium thermodynamic properties of a system, along with the symmetries it obeys. The validity of this approach is restricted solely by the condition that out-of-equilibrium perturbations must occur over length scales significantly larger than the microscopic scales of the system.
Hydrodynamic equations necessarily contain several transport coefficients with unknown magnitudes, which usually need to be determined experimentally. However, when both hydrodynamics and some form of kinetic theory can be applied to a system, these transport coefficients can be computed (or, more commonly, estimated) based on the underlying microscopic physics. This productive overlap between hydrodynamics and kinetic theory forms the central theme of this thesis.
The thesis presents several ways in which the existing methods for obtaining hydrodynamic transport properties from microscopic models can be generalized.
First, the long-standing challenge of determining transport coefficients for a non-relativistic ideal gas is addressed using a fully covariant framework. This approach extends the standard derivation of transport equations to curved non-relativistic spacetimes and non-inertial reference frames. This result makes significant strides toward resolving a fifty-year-old debate over the significance of the principle of frame invariance in kinetic theory.
Second, kinetic theory is used to investigate nonlocal conductivity in Weyl semimetals, providing a microscopic derivation of transport properties in a newly identified transport regime dubbed the anomaly-induced nonlocal regime. A hydrodynamic description of this regime is presented, revealing an intimate connection between its distinctive transport characteristics and the chiral anomaly. This analysis is complemented by identification of potential signatures of this novel regime in skin-effect experiments.
Finally, a microscopic model is proposed that, as demonstrated through a coarse-graining analysis, offers a potential realization of the recently hypothesized odd viscoelastic fluids: materials that exhibit fluid-like behavior at low frequencies and solid-like behavior at high frequencies, while simultaneously displaying chiral response to deformations
Phosphorus Dynamics in Preferential Flow of Forest Soils
Preferential flow pathways (PFPs) are an export pathway for phosphorus (P) from forest soils. Within the scope of this work, the translocation of P into the subsoil with the potential of P export was investigated. For this purpose, experiments were conducted at three beech sites with different levels of soil P stock in Germany. Mitterfels (MIT) is a hillslope site in the Bavarian Forest (Southeast Germany). The predominant soil type is a Cambisol, which has developed on paragneiss. The P stocks here are comparatively high. Buchhübel (BUH) is located in the Tharandt Forest (Eastern Germany). The site is characterized by fluvially deposited sands, loess loam and basalt. From these, Cambisols have developed. Sandy deposits dominate the profiles investigated at the site, which is why the phosphorus supply here is low. Lüss (LUE) is located in the Lüneburg Heath (North German Lowlands). The parent material is a sandy till, from which Cambisols have developed. The site is characterized by low P stocks. In addition to the initial experiments, a nutrient manipulation experiment was conducted at two of those sites, MIT and LUE. Here, nitrogen (N), P and N+P were each applied to an experimental plot. The experimental setup is the same on all plots: To collect preferential flow (PF), zero-tension lysimeters were installed at different soil depths (below the mineral topsoil and at two positions in the subsoil). Before the experiments, an extended dry period was simulated by covering the area above the instruments. Following the drying of the soil, a heavy rainfall event was simulated by spreading artificial rainwater evenly over the test area. Preferential flow water was sampled and subsequently analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively in the laboratory. The focus of the analyses was on P and its fractions. Total P (TP) as well as dissolved inorganic P (DIP), dissolved organic P (DOP) and particle-associated P (PP) were analyzed. The P loads were calculated from the concentrations and the sample volumes.
The highest concentrations of P in preferential flow water were found in the upper lysimeters below the mineral topsoil. With increasing sampling depth, the collected P concentrations decreased. In the upper samplers, mainly high concentrations of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) were measured, while in the middle samplers particle-associated phosphorus (PP) dominates. In the lower position samplers (lower subsoil), only little PF could be sampled. In line with the high concentrations in the topsoil, the highest loads of P, especially DIP, were also found there. In the middle samplers, high loads of PP were observed. In the examined fractions, dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) played only a minor role. In the course of the nutrient manipulation experiment, the observed P dynamics in the PF were related to the initial P contents of the soils of each site. Both the concentrations and the loads differ more clearly between the sites than by the respective nutrient manipulations. This is also confirmed by the statistical analysis. However, at all sites the standard deviations of the results were very high due to the strong heterogeneity of preferential flow in forest soils.
In this work, it is shown that zero-tension lysimeters are suitable for sampling PF in forest soils and to assess concentrations as well as loads of different P fractions in PF. Especially the possibility to sample PP is relevant for P budgets in forest ecosystems. In addition, first data on P fraction loads in PF in forest soil could be obtained. It has been shown that at low P sites, P losses from the topsoil are prevented despite large mobilization in the topsoil. At the same time, the potential for P translocation by PFP, especially in the fraction PP, could be detected. This potential should be further explored. From the manipulation experiments there was no indication of an influence of changing nutrient conditions on P in PF. However, the number of samples was very limited, so further studies would be necessary to generalize this statement.
How do bipolar disease states affect positive and negative emotion processing? Insights from a meta-analysis on the neural fingerprints of emotional processing
Background:
Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies on emotion processing in patients with bipolar disorder (BD) show hyperactivity of limbic-striatal brain areas and hypoactivity in inferior frontal areas compared to healthy participants. However, heterogeneous results in patients with different disease states and different valences of emotional stimuli have been identified.
Methods:
To integrate previous results and elucidate the impact of disease state and stimulus valence, we conducted a systematic literature search for journal articles in the Web of Science Core Collection including MEDLINE databases and employed a coordinate-based-meta-analysis of functional-MRI studies comparing emotion processing in BD-patients with healthy participants using seed-based d mapping (SDM) to test for between-subjects-effects. We included 31 studies published before 11/2022 with a total of N = 766 BD-patients and N = 836 controls.
Results:
Patients with BD showed hyperactivated regions involved in salience processing of emotional stimuli (e.g., the bilateral insula) and hypoactivation of regions associated with emotion regulation (e.g., inferior frontal gyrus) during emotion processing, compared to healthy participants. A more detailed descriptive analysis revealed a hypoactive (anterior) insula in manic BD-patients specifically for negative in comparison to positive emotion processing.
Discussion:
This meta-analysis corroborates the overall tenor of existing literature that patients with BD show an increased emotional reactivity (hyperactivity of salience-processing regions) together with a lower (cognitive) control (hypoactivity of brain areas associated with emotion regulation) over emotional states. Our analysis suggests reduced interoceptive processing of negative stimuli in mania, pointing out the need for longitudinal within-subject analyses of emotion processing
Saxony has repeatedly been in the public eye in recent years. Marches by neo-Nazis and “angry citizens,” electoral successes of far-right parties like the National Democratic Party (NPD) and Alternative for Germany (AfD), as well as ongoing protest events in the streets, have created the image of a stronghold of resentment, populism, and disillusionment with democracy. However, studies indicate that the state’s political culture is not fundamentally unique compared to other parts of Eastern Germany and Europe but is instead shaped by internal regional differences. Against this backdrop, the paper analyzes political attitudes in Saxony, focusing on satisfaction with democracy, trust in its institutions, as well as related sentiments and opinions. Drawing on recent data obtained from the ‘Saxony Monitor’ in 2021/22 and the Mercator Forum Migration and Democracy (MIDEM) at TU Dresden the paper also identifies key factors to explain these characteristics of the state’s local political culture. We find that negative attitudes towards democracy in Saxony strongly depend on subjective experiences of deprivation—feelings of lacking political efficacy, facing potential social decline, and experiencing cultural domination. These sentiments are partly rooted in biographical experiences during the period of transformation after 1989. The widespread desire for an alternative form of democracy, based on ‘direct democratic’ instruments of participation, is also driven by dissatisfaction with current representative decision-making processes. Strong forms of ethnocentric self-reference, extremist orientations, as well as regional characteristics, reinforce existing tendencies of criticism toward democracy. Interestingly, it is not urban areas with their social hotspots, nor rural regions with their stronger influence of religious communities, that exhibit the most noticeable trends towards mistrust and democratic disenchantment in Saxony, but rather medium-sized towns and smaller cities
Active learning for extracting surgomic features in robot-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy: A prospective annotation study
Background:
With Surgomics, we aim for personalized prediction of the patient's surgical outcome using machine-learning (ML) on multimodal intraoperative data to extract surgomic features as surgical process characteristics. As high-quality annotations by medical experts are crucial, but still a bottleneck, we prospectively investigate active learning (AL) to reduce annotation effort and present automatic recognition of surgomic features.
Methods:
To establish a process for development of surgomic features, ten video-based features related to bleeding, as highly relevant intraoperative complication, were chosen. They comprise the amount of blood and smoke in the surgical field, six instruments, and two anatomic structures. Annotation of selected frames from robot-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomies was performed by at least three independent medical experts. To test whether AL reduces annotation effort, we performed a prospective annotation study comparing AL with equidistant sampling (EQS) for frame selection. Multiple Bayesian ResNet18 architectures were trained on a multicentric dataset, consisting of 22 videos from two centers.
Results:
In total, 14,004 frames were tag annotated. A mean F1-score of 0.75 ± 0.16 was achieved for all features. The highest F1-score was achieved for the instruments (mean 0.80 ± 0.17). This result is also reflected in the inter-rater-agreement (1-rater-kappa > 0.82). Compared to EQS, AL showed better recognition results for the instruments with a significant difference in the McNemar test comparing correctness of predictions. Moreover, in contrast to EQS, AL selected more frames of the four less common instruments (1512 vs. 607 frames) and achieved higher F1-scores for common instruments while requiring less training frames.
Conclusion:
We presented ten surgomic features relevant for bleeding events in esophageal surgery automatically extracted from surgical video using ML. AL showed the potential to reduce annotation effort while keeping ML performance high for selected features. The source code and the trained models are published open source
Development of multi-material hybrid yarns consisting of steel, glass and polypropylene filaments for fiber hybrid composites
With the increased use of fiber-reinforced composites (FRPs), the design of a new generation of composite structures with high stiffness and a ductile material behavior is required to cope with complex load scenarios and high damage tolerances. This can be achieved, in particular, by a combination of conventional FRPs, which possess high stiffness and strength, with metallic materials characterized by their high ductility and associated higher energy absorption capacity. Currently, there are no solutions for the hybridization of high-performance filament yarns, metal filament yarns or thermoplastic filament yarns at the micro level. Therefore, the aim of this paper is the hybridization of multi-fiber components intermixed at the micro scale. For this purpose, three hybridization processes were investigated. They are conventional air-jet technology, air-jet technology based on a modified air nozzle and an additional pre-spreading device and a process based on a newly developed multi-level-intermixing device. The effect of different processing parameters, such as air pressure, air nozzle and type of manufacturing, on the tensile properties, appearance and damage of multi-material hybrid yarn was analyzed. The results show that the developed multi-material hybrid yarns have high potential for use in composites with high requirements for crash and impact properties
Anatomical and Biomechanical Properties of the Junction between Stem and Aerial Roots of Selenicereus undatus
Cacti have a distinct adaptation to arid conditions with a massive water storing tissue surrounding a weak central woody cylinder. However, they have not been studied as extensively as other plants have been. Selenicereus undatus is a hemi-epiphytic root climber that attaches itself to supporting plants or rocks with adventitious roots. The anatomy and biomechanics of the adventitious roots were studied using light microscopy, X-ray tomography and pullout and uniaxial tensile tests. The central cylinder of the roots is highly lignified and is connected to the vascular system of the shoot in a peculiar way. Xylem elements of the root turn 90 degrees towards the base of the shoot and merge laterally and below the junction with those from the shoot. Tensile and pull-out tests showed that failure occurs either at the root or junction, with the fracture surface mainly comprising the area where xylem elements from the root merge with those from the shoot. However, damage to the cortical tissue was minimal, and the measured forces showed that adventitious roots have a high safety factor. Even a complete failure of the junction after pullout does not result in severe injury to the cortex, which could lead to water loss or the entry of pathogens
