ADVANCING FROM THE MODERN QUEST FOR MIRACLES TO A POST MODERN SCIENCE OF THE MIRACULOUS

    Get PDF
The mechanical model of the Universe that so dominated the modern era effectively banished the deep wondrous and miraculous to a distant realm outside daily existence and experience of psyche and creation. Modern religion responded by defining miracles as essentially "divine interventions contradicting nature's laws." Bur what if existence itself is miraculous and wondrous and our capacity for awe, reverence, gratitude and "isness" itself were the true meaning of the miraculous? Is this not what the mystics teach and what post-modern science is destined (0 teach us as well?Approached with an appropriate sense of wonder, we can see the depth of the miraculous within nature and within human nature in particular. Modern science removed the fantasy that we and our earth occupy the physical center of the universe, but post-modern science has demonstrated that we do live right in the middle of the scale of things, and we have the creative powers (0 discover our place in the scheme of things. Reawakening awareness of the sacredness of being, the sacredness of existence, enlivens our sciences to recognize the light of the multitude of divine sparks. Awakening wonder empowers compassion, and sparks our creativity (0 heal the damage we have done by believing we were masters of the world, when we are actually embedded in the web of creation. We will explore these and other questions about the miraculous within nature In general and within human nature in particular

THE EFFECT OF EARTHING ON HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY

    Get PDF
The human hody evolved while living in direct electrical contact (electricallv grounded) with the earth. The question that arises is: Does loss of electrical contact with the earth affect human physiology? This douhk-hlind swdy was designed to address this question hy measuring several electrophysiological parameters of the hody. Suhjects were assigned [0 an experimental group that was grounded to the earth after a 28-minure haseline recording. Grounding the hody (earthing) was achieved hy placing electrode patches on the soles of the feet and connecting them to a conductive cahle that was attached to a metal rod planted in the earth. The total recording time was ')6 minutes. The control group was not grounded hur "sham grounded." Part 1 of this stud~· presented results from measurements taken with clinical hiofeedhack equipment. This paper pf(:sents results ohtained on Jing-Well points using the SSVP (Single Square Voltage Pulse) method. With the SSVP method we were able to corroborate results presented in our first paper with the biofeedback system. The SSVP method results are that grounding the body produces a reduction in tension (relaxation) of the internal organs and a reduction in inflammation. \X'e also postulated that the body was developed to take advanrage of (he contact with the eanh through the feet hy developing a system of distribution of electrons through the kidney meridian at K11. The presenr finding, are consistent with the results of our previous study which concluded that grounded subjects experienced a reduction in stress and a normalization of the functioning of the auronomic nervous system after eanhing.

Creating Wormholes: A Journey in Consciousness

    Get PDF
Some of the most thrilling advances of the last decade are reflected in the way in which those involved in consciousness and science are gaining respect for each other with many cutting edge ideas incorporating aspects of both. We are in truth creating wormholes or passages of light between different states of awareness and different dimensional perspectives, breaking down old paradigms which maintain separation. Steps we can take to ease our passageway through this stage of transformation will be explored

Psychophysiological Assessment of Buddhist Taiwanese Chanting

    Get PDF
The psychophysiological responses and subjective experience correlates of Buddhist chanting were recorded from a 54 year-old female Buddhist monk who performed chanting for approximately 30 to 60 minutes twice daily for 25 years. The measutes included respiration rate from upper thorax, blood volume pulse (BVP) from left middle finger with heart rate derived from BVP, finger temperature from right index finger, skin conductance (SC) from the left index finger and the ring finger and sutface electromyographic (sEMG) from right trapezius and left sternocleidomastoid muscles (SCM) and were recorded during normal chanting sequence which included reading sutra aloud with her eyes open (chanting "The Samanta-Mukha") and silent mental repetition of sutra with the eyes closed (chanting "The Heart Sutra" inside her mind). After chanting she reported feeling peaceful, more relaxation with a total focus of attention and "consciousness"-an experience that was similar to when she chanted in the temple with other monks. The most significant finding was that respiration rate changed from 7.2 br/min during pre-baseline, to 12.1 brlmin during reading sutra aloud, 5.7 brlmin during silent mental repetition of sutra and 7.5 brl/min during post-baseline. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) was significantly higher during post-baseline than reading chanting and silent mental repetition of sutra. All physiological measures were significantly different for each condition. This study suggests that the subjective experience associated with chanting can not be attributed to increased RSA and slower breathing as it depends upon the style of chanting. The spiritual experience associated with chanting appears to be evoked through the focused attention on the sutra

MYSTICAL EXPERIENCES AND SELF-ESTEEM: A Study of the Correlation Between Personal Mystical Experiences and the Demonstration of Positive Levels of Self-Esteem in an Agricultural Population Over the Age of Sixty

    Get PDF
Throughout time, individuals have described experiencing states of consciousness that extend far beyond their ordinary perceptual consciousness. Such experiences can change the individual's view of the world forever. These experiences tend to be ineffable, intense, and deeply moving. This study was designed to examine whether individuals over the age of sixty, who have been involved in farming or agriculture, have experienced a significant mystical event and whether this event is correlated with positive self-esteem. The sixty subjects included in this study were drawn from a population in rural Kansas. The Rosenberg Scale was administered to establish levels of self-esteem. Questions used to ascertain the occurrence of a significant mystical experience were taken from the 1974 National Opinion Research Center (NORC) survey of 1,500 American adults. In addition to completing the Rosenberg Scale and the mysticism scale from the NORC, participants were given the opportunity to talk about a mystical or significant experience in their lives. These interviews served as anecdotal evidence of the way participants are interpreting a mystical event and the type of mystical events experienced. Results indicate that 43% of the participants in this study experienced a mystical event as defined by the NORC question. There was no significant correlation between reporting a mystical experience and having positive self-esteem. However, there were several significant correlations between reporting a mystical experience and experiencing descriptor items related to classical descriptions of mystical experience

NEUROPHYSIOLOGICAL INDICATORS OF EFT TREATMENT OF POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS

    Get PDF
Clients previously involved in a motor vehicle accident who reported traumatic stress associated with the accident received two sessions of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) treatments. All dients reported improvement immediately following treatment. Brainwave assessments before and after EFT treatment indicated that dients who sustained the benefit of the EFT treatments had increased 13-15 Hz amplitude over the sensory motor cortex, decreased right frontal cortex arousal and an increased 3-7 Hz / 16-25 Hz ratio in the occiput. The benefits of psychoneurological research to reveal the processes of subtle energy healing are discussed
