PHILOSOPHICAL SPECULATIONS ON TWO THERAPEUTIC APPLICATIONS OF BREATH
Life begins and ends with breath. Slight bodily changes are brought about by alteration in the mechanisms of breath. In addition, mental changes are also influenced by breath. Our general condition of well-being is dependent upon the rhythmic of breathing within us. Similarly, emotions change the rhythm of breath and when we become overexcited, then we lose control over the breath. By gaining control of the breath then we mastery of mind and body. Not only that, we also establish a connection with the world around us, of which we are pan, through the breath. Two healing initiatives based upon breath are used as illustration of breath both as a subtle organizing property and as a material manifestation. The first example is the use of breath through singing to intentionally organize the physiological abilities of another person as they recover from coma. Singing is literally the intentional use of breath to heal realized through a particular therapeutic form, which is imptovised music therapy. A fundamental property of breathing is that it has rhythm. In musical terms, rhythm has to have the property of intention otherwise it would be simply repetition or pulse. The second healing initiative is that of Qigong Yangsheng for the treatment of asthma. Breathing is used here also as an intentional activity, this time by the patient to improve his or her own breathing abilities and to heal what is essentially a breathing problem, the material manifestation of air-flow. In this latter example, the healer acts as a teacher and guide for the sufferer to influence her own breathing
THE EFFECT OF "HEALING WITH INTENT" ON PEAK EXPIRATORY FLOW RATES IN ASTHMATICS
This study was conducted in order to determine whether "healing with intent'" (HWI) could be demonstrated to exert a beneficial effect on peak expiratory flow rates (PEFR) in diagnosed asthmatics. In 22 asthmatics who received HWI, for a ten-minute period, their PEFR was found to imptove significantly (p = 0.009), while 18 of these subjects who returned a week after the first session showed still further improvement (p = 0.003). No significant change was observed in the 26 non-asthmatics that received HWI following either the treatment or conttol session. These results suggest that the delivery of HWI, for ten minutes, to people with asthma, ptoduces a significant improvement in breathing efficiency, using peak expiratory flow rate as an indication of lung function
THE INNER ALCHEMY OF BUDDHIST TANTRIC MEDITATION: A QEEG CASE STUDY USING Low RESOLUTION ELECTROMAGNETIC TOMOGRAPHY (LORETA)
Indo-Tibetan Buddhist T~mtric practice employs struClured self-healing meditations aimed at awakening emotional and spitiruai qualities or energies whose seed already resides within us. This profound transfi)rmative pranice. with wrirren records dating back to at least 400 c.E., is investigated from several diverse orienrations: depth psychology. neuropsychology, and neurophysiology. from a Jungian perspecrive. the psychological process of this pracrice involves the re-collection and development of these energies to engender emotional and spirirual growth. Using a phenomenological task analysis. the various nemocognitive processes involved in such practice are identitied. Finally. we analyze the qU3mitative electroencephalographic (QEEG) characreristics of a Buddhisr ex-monk during various aspects of a self-healing meditation practice. The QEEG was recorded with a Lexicor Neuroseatch 24 ,md data analyzed using NeuroRep, NeuroGuidc. LORETA-KEY and EureKa!3 software. EEG rderence database, as well low resolution electromagnetic tomography (LORETA), Staristical comparison of baseline and meditation conditions using LORETA revealed areas of brain activation consistent with those reponed in previolls neuroimaging studies. The QEEG results are discussed in the context of the phenomenological processes involved in the differenr types of meditation as well as with results of previolls srudies
SIMILARITIES AND DISSIMILARITIES OF MERIDIAN FUNCTIONS BETWEEN GENDERS
The Single Square Voltage Pulse (SSVP) method was applied on specific acupuncture points of about 2,500 male and female subjects who live in California. Data was gathered during a period of six years from 1994 to 2000 at the California Institute for Human Science (CIHS). The gathered data were examined to investigate possible gender differences regarding meridian function. From the current curve generated by the application of the SSVP method, only the BP (Before Polarization; the pre-polarization current in the dermis) was used in this study. Analysis of the data showed that male meridian function is more active and has more energy than female meridian function during cold and hot seasons, whereas female subjects have more energy and have more active meridian function during mild seasons. On the contrary the distribution of the most active meridians and the most inactive meridians shows the same pattern between males and females, which indicates that males and females are almost the same in their vital energy system
THE UNITY OF CONSCIOUSNESS EXPERIENCE AND CURRENT PHYSICAL THEORY
We in the western scientific culture have just begun, in mass, to explote our inner cosmos. Inner exploration has been an intellectual activity in the relatively recent past, has been associated with psychotherapy. Now inner exploration is beginning [0 enter the domain of emotional and spiritual development as well. Certainly the nature of our inner being, the nature and structure of our consciousness, shapes and determines our concept of reality. This realization is having a vast impact on the world societies and us, as individuals. One manner in which we internally organize the mental, emotional and spiritual information we receive is by mental system of concepts or categories of information and their causal relations. We address the fundamental nature of conscious perception and how we comprehend existence. Techniques such as yoga, meditation, and processes of spiritual awakening have opened the horizons to the consideration of the attributes of the consciousness. There also appear [0 be clues as [0 the nature of consciousness in the structure of physical theory. In fact, the co-called internal journey and external validation system of science may be leading us onto a similar path of knowing. In this paper, we explore some of the basis of the structure and representations of human thought and thought processes. If we can better understand the relationship between our inner thinking, feeling modes on the external world and our universal connections, we will be able [0 better move [0 world peace, personal peace and freedom in time
GRAVES DISEASE TREATEDWITH CLASSICAL HOMEOPATHY
This is a clincal report of Graves disease treatment. Case repertorization was according to classical homeopathic principles using mental, general and particular symptoms – including symptoms just prior to, during and after the onset of the illness. Some long term “constitutional” symptoms were also considered. Symptom onset occurred in relation to the loss of a relative. NatrumMuriaticum 200C provided immediate but short term symptomatic relief. Through the initial three months of treatment, appropriate potencies were empirically evaluated and thyroid function improved. Free T4 dropped from three times the upper limit of normal to the high normal range, and excess gland reduced. Over the course of a year MM potency was most frequently used. The patient is now using a novel, specially prepared potency. Remedy doses are lasting from two to three days rather than previous periods of 8 to 12 hours
