The determination of lineage (nasab) in Islamic law is a crucial issue, especially in cases where the paternity of a child is in question. The advancement of science, particularly through DNA testing, has provided a new method for determining lineage. However, this method raises questions regarding its compatibility with Islamic law. This research examines the decisions of the 31st Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Congress and the fatwa from Darul Ifta Egypt regarding the use of DNA testing for determining lineage. The study aims to analyze the legal basis and implications of these decisions and fatwas in the context of Islamic jurisprudence. The research is normative juridical in nature, using a library research approach. Data sources include primary legal materials, secondary legal materials, and tertiary legal materials. The data analysis technique uses qualitative descriptive analysis with deductive conclusions. The findings indicate that both NU and Darul Ifta Egypt recognize the importance of DNA testing in determining lineage, but with certain conditions and limitations to ensure compliance with Islamic law. The study concludes that DNA testing can be used as a supplementary tool in determining lineage, provided it does not contradict the principles of Islamic jurisprudence. Keywords: DNA Testing, Lineage, Nahdlatul Ulama, Darul Ifta Egypt

Despite the growing recognition of multicultural values in education, Arabic reading materials that explicitly incorporate multicultural themes remain limited, especially within Islamic higher education. This study aims to fill this gap by: (1) designing a multicultural-based reading syllabus, (2) developing appropriate reading materials, (3) assessing the feasibility of both, and (4) evaluating their effectiveness in improving students’ reading skills. Employing a mixed-methods approach with field research, the development follows Borg and Gall’s ten-step model. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, questionnaires, and reading tests, involving second-semester students from classes A7 and A8 of the Islamic Education Program at FTIK, IAIN Jember. Results show that the syllabus aligns with subject-centered design and KKNI standards, while the developed materials reflect multicultural values such as tolerance, justice, equality, and humanity. Statistical analysis confirms a significant improvement in students’ reading abilities after using the materials. The study concludes that integrating multicultural themes into Arabic reading instruction not only enhances language proficiency but also cultivates inclusive and culturally responsive learning. These findings suggest the potential for broader implementation of multicultural approaches in Arabic language curricula across Islamic higher education institutions

The integration of technology into education continues to evolve, with Android-based game media offering new opportunities for more engaging learning experiences. However, there is still a lack of research that specifically focuses on developing Android-based game media to improve Arabic grammar skills at the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah level. This study aims to develop Android-based game media to enhance students’ Arabic grammar skills in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah. Utilizing a Research and Development (R&D) approach with the Alessi & Trollip development model, the research involved media experts, subject matter experts, practitioners, and 40 students. Data were collected through observation and questionnaires, then analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative methods. During alpha testing, the media received an average feasibility score of 91.17% from experts and practitioners, categorized as "very strong." In the beta testing phase, 40 students participated, and the media achieved an average score of 88.00%, also rated as "very strong." These results indicate that the Android-based game media is highly feasible and effective for supporting Arabic grammar instruction. The study concludes that this media can serve as a valuable supplementary tool to improve grammar proficiency and increase student engagement in Arabic language learning at the elementary level

Proficiency in speaking skills (maharah kalām) is crucial for Arabic language acquisition, yet conventional, teacher-centered approaches often provide limited opportunities for contextual communication. This study develops and evaluates an immersive Virtual Reality (VR) learning medium using the Delightex platform to enhance students’ Arabic speaking performance. Employing an R&D design with the ADDIE model, participants were 30 seventh-grade female students at a modern Islamic boarding school. Data were collected via observations and semi-structured interviews, speaking tests (pre–post), and questionnaires, and analyzed using mixed methods. Results indicate substantial improvement: the average score increased from 66.1 (pre-test) to 85.5 (post-test), with 28 of 30 students (98%) meeting the minimum mastery criterion KKM. The normalized gain (N-Gain) attained a value of 0.57, classified as medium-high. Qualitative findings show higher engagement, reduced speaking anxiety, better contextual vocabulary use, and increased confidence during avatar-based dialogues in a virtual library scenario. The findings indicated that Delightex-VR media is highly efficient in enhancing maharah kalām and aids in the advancement of technology-driven Arabic language learning methods in Islamic boarding schools

Incorporating cooperative learning into the Emancipated Curriculum in Indonesia: The English teachers’ perspectives

    No full text
Diminished academic performance and an uptick in bullying necessitate heightened attention to fostering positive student interactions and skills. To address these issues, educators can effectively employ cooperative learning (CL) methods within their classes. This gap in the research underscores the need for a deeper investigation into the teachers’ implementations and weaknesses in CL practices. This research delved into the teachers’ understanding, implementations, and problems with CL in implementing Kurikulum Merdeka or Emancipated Curriculum (EC). It also examines how a professional development program influences teachers’ ability to integrate CL effectively. The twelve participants were English teachers from different places in Indonesia with diverse teaching career stages. A mixed-method approach was employed, involving questionnaires with statistical analysis using SPSS 30 and interviews through thematic analysis. Quantitative findings show that teachers’ activities align with the CL framework, while qualitative data reveal inconsistencies in actual practice. This contrast suggests a gap between perception and implementation, highlighting the need for targeted support to ensure meaningful CL application in classrooms

Gender stereotypes in visual and verbal texts from government-distributed EFL textbook: Critical discourse analysis

    No full text
Research on gender stereotypes in educational materials has been documented. However, research exploring gender stereotype constructions within visual and verbal materials of English as a foreign language (EFL) textbooks remains limited. This study investigates gender stereotype constructions within visual and verbal materials of the Indonesian government-distributed EFL textbook to shape learners\u27 perceptions of gender roles. This study employed critical discourse analysis (CDA) to explore how textbooks construct stereotypical roles through visual depictions, dialogue patterns (verbal), and linguistic characteristics as data sources and verbal ones. The visual and verbal texts were documented in dialogues and analyzed considering theories of gender stereotypes using CDA. The results reveal that males are assigned lucrative and out-of-the-home jobs, like farmers (Beni\u27s father) and teachers (Dayu\u27s dad). In contrast, women are tied to household responsibilities, such as Lisa\u27s mom being a housewife, which confirms the notion that women play a primary role in providing care. This study highlights the significance of employing gender-sensitive teaching strategies to enable EFL students to critically analyze stereotypes and form more expansive understandings of gender roles

Constructing professional identity through self-reflection: A case study of Pattani pre-service teachers in Indonesia

    No full text
Pre-service teachers’ (PSTs) reflective teaching practice has been seen as early professional growth. However, it has not delved yet into how Pattani PSTs as international students construct their professional identity through self-reflection. The study aims to investigate the Pattani PSTs constructing their professional identity through self-reflection, the role of self-reflection in shaping their professional identity, and the process of self-reflection impacting their identity as future teachers during the teaching practice program in Indonesia. This qualitative case study involved three PSTs from Pattani in Southern Thailand as research participants. The data were garnered from reflective journals, dialogic reflection, and teaching practice artefacts. The data from self-reflections were cross-checked and validated using interviews with three teacher mentors and one teacher educator, as well as their lesson plans. Data from reflective journals and interviews were analyzed thematically, while dialogic reflections were examined using appraisal analysis. The findings revealed three emerging themes: (1) retrospection and collaboration; (2) inner, outer, and interactive contemplations; and (3) envisioning teacher as a future career. The study suggests that for international PSTs, targeted pre-practicum training in intercultural communicative competence and local pedagogical knowledge is crucial to facilitate positive self-reflection and professional identity construction.
