A New Way to Play Hockey in Canada: Parents’ and Coaches’ Beliefs Regarding the Half-Ice Gameplay Model for Novice Hockey
Youth sport provides the opportunity for children to develop skills, motivation, and interests towards an active lifestyle. In Canada, more than 75% of young people (6-12 years old) are engaged in organized sport; more specifically, over 300 000 children participate in organized hockey. Hockey Canada recently decided to propose a new way to introduce young people to hockey by implementing the half-ice game play model for novice players (7-8 years old). Based on other similar contexts, changes in the culture of a sport tend to cause a divergence in public opinion, which makes them controversial, thus making implementation more difficult at the grassroots level. This paper studies the parents and coaches of young hockey players by measuring their beliefs regarding the half-ice game play model for novice hockey, in the preceding year to official implementation. More specifically, the objective is threefold: 1) to describe and verify parents’ and coaches’ beliefs regarding the half-ice game play model, 2) to examine their preferences regarding the format of play they believe is best for their children (or players), and 3) to verify if their beliefs differ based on their province or association. The sample consisted of 6,892 participants (81% parents, 19% coaches) from across Canada (8 provinces/regions). Questionnaires measuring socio-demographic factors, beliefs, and preferences regarding the play model were completed and group comparisons were conducted. Results indicate that mothers’ beliefs differ significantly from those of fathers and coaches. The second part of the analysis also reveals important differences, in terms of territorial predispositions towards the preferred format for novice ice hockey. To facilitate implementation of a new ice hockey program, the results of this study suggest there are crucial aspects to consider with respect to the education of parents and coaches. Further research perspectives based on a long-term approach are also discussed
A Lot of People Did Not Want This to Happen: Analyzing the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Brand Identity During COVID
Using three highly visible promotional videos from the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), we perform a critical examination of the UFC’s branding during the COVID-19 pandemic. The first is a recorded endorsement from President Donald Trump, the second introduces the origin of an international pay-per-view series called “Fight Island” and the third is an end of year retrospective of the UFC’s performance in 2020. Employing content analysis grounded in brand psychology and narrative persuasion, we deconstruct the visual communication and story-based elements within this advertising to reveal how the company has adopted an identity of heroic dominance and defiance. This persona is built from a cognitively biased and framed suggestive notion which the UFC uses to market themselves as the lone organization fearless enough to “conquer” COVID-19 through the continuation of live events and overcoming obstacles posed by government regulation and media criticism. Ultimately, we find three dominant narratives actively established from this identity and heavily employed in their subsequent branded content: “Sport Must Go On,” “Unstoppable Force,” and “World Gone Crazy.” We conclude by arguing that the UFC’s branding reifies the tenuous social and political position the young sport occupies by marketing the combat sports company as different than other mainstream sport leagues, through repeated celebration of the Dana White (President of the UFC) as a heroic figure, by their disavowal of caution in the face of a pandemic, and in portrayal of the mainstream media as a jealous enemy
Theaters of Competition: Modernization and the Survival of the National Hockey League’s Original Six
For more than two decades after its inception, the National Hockey League (NHL) experienced the contraction and expansion of franchises as the league extended its control over the major professional hockey market in both the United States and Canada. From its initial membership of four teams in 1917, the NHL increased to as many as 10 teams and extended as far south and west as St. Louis, Missouri before contracting back to the Original Six franchises in 1942. Interestingly, the Original Six played in modern multipurpose arenas constructed in the 1920s and 1930s. The present study seeks to understand the historical factors that influenced the design and construction of those multipurpose arenas and the role of those venues in the persistence of the Original Six. The historical methodology for sport management was applied to study the design and construction of multipurpose arenas between 1924 and 1931. Furthermore, modernization theory was employed to understand and rationalize the intentional actions of sport managers within a burgeoning capitalist socioeconomic setting. Findings suggest that sport managers responded to an expanding economy, emerging middle-manager class, and consumer culture by designing facilities capable of maximizing profits and attracting broad demographic and economic segments, thus assuring the Original Six’s survival
Entrega do curso HyFlex: abordando a mudança na Modalidade de curso trazida pela pandemia
Teacher preparation programs need quality training courses that offer flexible, interactive alternatives to isolating online courses and classroom-based programs that limit students to a specific place and time. The HyFlex course design provides a solution by combining internet video instruction (such as Zoom), regular online learning, and face-to-face classroom experiences into one course where students can choose the method that best meets their individual learning needs and even alternate between methods throughout the course session. HyFlex aligns with learner centered instruction and offers a unique opportunity for educators to receive quality licensure courses. This article explores existing literature on the HyFlex course delivery method and discusses a case study done to examine student outcomes resulting from its use in a post-baccalaureate special education teacher licensure program.Los programas de formación docente necesitan cursos de formación de calidad que ofrezcan servicios flexibles e interactivos.alternativas al aislamiento de cursos en línea y programas presenciales que limitan a los estudiantes a unlugar y tiempo específico. Inviting Autonomy: Common Roots and Beliefs of Self-determination Theory and Invitational Education Theory
Often, educational and psychological theories stand independently of one another, focusing on particular, discreet components of learning or motivation. However, there are many similarities between invitational educational theory, which examines motivation and education, and self-determination theory, a theory of motivation and personality. Both theories, when applied to educational settings, value respectful relationships between teachers and students. They encourage practitioners to incorporate choice into their plans and recognize the importance of a person’s perception to that person’s related behavior. Invitational education theory and selfdetermination theory were developed separately by different researchers. However, the two theories emerged during the early 1970s, at a time when educators and psychologists were rejecting behaviorism and, instead, beginning to value a humancentered approach. This paper aims to introduce invitational education and selfdetermination theory, describe their origins from a similar place and time via humanistic psychology, and highlight key similarities in their beliefs with the ultimate goal of enhancing knowledge in order to continue to improve classrooms world-wide
