A Victorious Victim: The Physical and Spiritual Realms of Early Christianity and Martyrdom
No full textBased on the primary source “The Passion of SS. Perpetua and Felicitas,” this paper aims to explore the relationship between the physical and spiritual realms in the early Christian mindset. The account of Perpetua—a third-century Christian martyr—offers insight into religious persecution in the Roman Empire prior to the decriminalization of Christianity by Emperor Constantine in the fourth century. Many physical and spiritual elements are included as the account describes Perpetua’s conversion, her imprisonment, and supernatural visions. Two of Perpetua’s visions are analysed in this context in an effort to more fully understand the early Christian perception of the fluidity between heaven and earth. Not only do spiritual beliefs have observable implications in the temporal world, but physical objects and experiences are present in the spiritual realm as well
Content Validation of a Recreational and Sport Risk-Taking Scale
No full textPurpose: The practice of sport and leisure has many physiological and psychological benefits. However, certain behaviours may contravene the physical integrity and well-being of participants, notably through sports injuries. Several endogenous (sensation seeking, risk perception, psycho- affective aspects, substance consumption, age) and exogenous (social influence, recreational and sporting factors, protective equipment, physical environment) dimensions make up risk-taking behaviours. Method: A qualitative study helped in developing an explanatory risk-taking model. A scale, based on the results of this work, could serve as a useful tool to better understand the determinants of leisure risk-taking among young people and, thus, propose more relevant prevention measures. The purpose of our research is to precisely design and attest to the content validity of a scale based on measuring recreational and sport risk-taking factors among young people between the ages of fourteen and twenty-four years through a Delphi survey with experts (n=7) and two focus groups (n=12). Results: Our findings show that, after these two data collections, the questionnaire displays satisfactory content validity. Continued analysis of psychometric qualities will ensure construct vali dity and fidelity
An NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision Production Function
No full textEach year pundits across the NCAA football landscape debate the validity of various NCAA football teams’ relative worthiness to play for the national championship. Given this debate seems to revolve around which team is the best in terms of total team production, I have developed and statistically estimated a complex invasion NCAA football bowl subdivision production function measuring NCAA football team productivity covering the 2008 to 2017 seasons. The model estimates both points scored and points surrendered for each team during this time period and then is combined to determine each team’s overall productivity. Finally, as an application of the complex invasion college football production function model, I have ranked the overall productivity of the NCAA football bowl subdivision teams for the 2017 season to find the most productive team. The model concludes that the University of Alabama was the most productive team for the 2017 season
‘True Champions and Incredible Patriots’: The Transformation of the Ceremonial White House Visit under President Trump
No full textn the United States, a championship-winning sports team’s ceremonial visit to the White House has become a familiar tradition. Beginning nearly a century ago when Calvin Coolidge invited the Washington Senators to celebrate their second American League Pennant in 1924, the White House visit has evolved into such a common occurrence that we tend to take it for granted as a public relations ploy for the political elites and sports darlings of the moment, ultimately bearing little consequence for either. Yet the rhetorical strategies involved in these events reveal shifting understandings of sports’ role in American culture along with interrelated anxieties about what defines the United St ates as a nation. Especially in the context of a turbulent and divisive social climate under President Trump, the ceremonial White House visit has become an unlikely stage for displaying overarching ideological tensions. The controversies surrounding Trump’s invitations and disinvitations, as well as players’ acceptances and rejections, illuminate the inherently political dimensions of sport as athletes conform to, negotiate, or in many cases subvert societal expectations. Mounting disruptions of an enduring White House ritual have initiated a dialogue about leaders hip, honor, and freedom, foundational tenets of the US and the office that represents it
Gamers Who Gamble: Examining the Relationship Between Esports Spectatorship and Event Wagering
No full textDuring recent years, while electronic sports (esports) has increasingly become a positive mainstream cultural phenomenon, it also may have several socio-economic implications, such as the growth of esports betting. Much like betting in sport, betting on esports has become a prominent form of gambling. However, there is still a paucity of knowledge on the demographic characteristics of this gambling cohort, particularly in regard to its relationship to video game play and spectatorship. In the present study, past-year video gamers (N = 1368) completed an online survey. Survey questions inquired about their esports event spectating, video game play, and esports betting behaviours, as well as general demographic questions. Video gamers who bet on esports were a distinct cohort from their counterparts: younger, more likely to be male, lower frequency of video game play, higher frequency of esports spectatorship, and more likely to watch esports in a social setting (e.g., with others). By providing a background on gamers’ behaviours this work contributes to the growing body of research into the dynamic profile of esports play, spectatorship, and gambling. Findings are reflective of the growing interrelation of gambling and gaming behaviours, a subject garnering increasing attention from governments, regulatory agencies, public health specialists and clinicians, and the related industries themselves
When Ford and Chevy Were Argentine: The Great Era of Turismo de Carretera
No full textThis article focuses on Argentine car racing, and more specifically, the car racing class that from the 1930s through the early 1970s was the country’s most popular racing event, Turismo de Carretera (touring car racing or TC). For decades, TC drew thousands of fans on paved freeways, on closed speedways, and along rough-and-tumble dirt routes through cities, towns, and the countryside. In the performance, consumption, and narratives of TC, Argentines made U.S. car brands their own. American autos became Argentine. In part, this is an analysis of a culturally constructed hybridity, the Argentine-American car. But more than that, the paper argues that in the 1950s and 1960s, TC transformed quintessential U.S. brands and cultural markers into representations of Argentine daring and mechanical know-how. The central figures in that transformation were the legions of local mechanics who made American cars Argentine through their brilliance under the hood and sometimes, behind the wheel as well

No full textL’écrivain français Georges Bernanos est parmi ces auteurs qui mettent en question les habitudes, qui déjouent les prévisions. Mais il reste fidèle à lui-même et aux valeurs auxquelles il a consacré sa vie et son écriture qui la considère comme une sorte de vocation. Il a réfléchi sur la thématique de l’exil, à laquelle il a donné une nouvelle définition. Ne pas se considérer comme exilé ou déraciné marque déjà le point de départ de toute une réflexion sur cette notion. Son sens de l’engagement a fortement alimenté son œuvre de combat. Le véritable exil, pour lui, consiste à une inadéquation dans l’être, un déséquilibre. L’éloignement géographique n’est pas un exil. Par ailleurs, perdre son enfant intérieur est vécu comme un exil. L’exil dans le temps est plus dur à supporter que celui dans l’espace.
