    The Challenge Within : Diversity Training In Teacher Education

Because the population of the United States continues to change, and schools must adjust to meet the challenge of educating a diverse body of students, Teacher Education Programs must look within to identify what characteristics of difference are addressed and how they are addressed to prepare pre-service teachers. Procedure. A survey was electronically emailed to 50 teacher education faculty from three Midwestern Institutions. Frequency counts and percentage data was used to analyze the faculty sample and the instructional strategies used to address characteristics of difference. A Chi Square Goodness of Fit Test was utilized to analyze what instructional methods were used for each the characteristics of difference. Qualitative analysis of data was utilized to clarify and add depth to the findings of the study. Findings. The teacher education faculty who responded to the survey are addressing many characteristics of difference. The number of faculty from individual programs would also indicate that characteristics of difference are not limited to only one diversity course in those programs. The majority of the Teacher Education Faculty when addressing characteristics of difference avoided instructional strategies that were student-focused, but reported teacher-led, "tell and talk" instructional strategies most often. Recommendation. Additional research is needed to identify specific strategies and activities for each of the characteristics of difference. Encouraging faculty to be reflective about their own worldview and how this impacts the classroom, to participate in professional development opportunities and to work as a team to establish what characteristics of difference are actually being addressed will increase diversity awareness and strengthen the teacher education program. Pre-service teachers should have more field experience that includes exposure to and interaction with diverse populations.     "Characterizing reactivity of benzyl esters in sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles"

    Purpose: To study the effect of changing structure of benzyl esters on its reactivity in sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles. Methods: Ester molecules with benzyl moiety were either purchased or synthesized. Alkyl groups of the esters were increased incrementally from one to six carbons, also, the location of the ester bond was shifted from the first carbon attached to the benzene ring as in benzyl acetate to three and six carbons awary from the benzene ring as in 3-Phenylpropylacetate and 6-Phenylhexylacetate. Hydrolysis reaction rate constants fro each compound were determined in borate buffer at pH 9 and in surfactant solutions at 40 degrees C. HPLC was used to separate reactants and products. Results: As the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain has increased, rate constant in buffer decreased according to an increase in the alkyl chain starting from methyl and ending with hexyl. In micelles, rate constants also decreased as the surfactant concentration increased, this effect can be attributed to an increase in partitioning of the ester molecules into micelles. Conclusion: Date suggests that benzyl acetate, propionate, butyrate, 3-phenylpropyl acetate and pentanoate are located inside the palisade layer of the micelles where water is present. In regard to the orientation of the ester molecules, comparing benzyl butyrate and 3-phenypropyl acetate rate constants in micelles, data suggests that hydrocarbon chains of both molecules were facing the surface of the micelle.Drake University, College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Chemistry

    Excessive exposure to sunlight can be harmful as the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays cause DNA damage. If this damage is not repaired in human cells, cancer and/or cell death can result. With the incidence of skin cancer growing at an increasing rate, there has been much research directed at finding more effective ways to protect against damage from the sun's harmful UV radiation. A number of commercially available products ranging from sunscreens to fabrics claim to protect humans from sunlight. The effects of UV radiation on cells and the mechanisms cells use to repair UV-induced DNA damage are hightlly conserved between yeast and humans. Therefore, yeast is an excellent model organism for the study of UV-induced DNA damage and DNA repair. The BIO12: General and Pre-professional Biology course includes an inquiry-based laboratory. During the genetics block of this lab, students use the model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae, common baker's yeast, to compare the abilities of substances to protect yeast cells against ultraviolet (UV) light.     "Assessing and comparing physical environments for nursing home residents: Using new tools for greater research specificity"

He can be contacted at [email protected]: We developed and tested theoretically derived procedures to observe physical environments experienced by nursing home residents at three nested levels: their rooms, the nursing unit, and the overall facility. Illustrating with selected descriptive results, in this article we discuss the development of the approach. Design and Methods: On the basis of published literature, existing instruments, and expert opinion about environmental elements that might affect quality of life, we developed separate observational checklists for the room and bath environment, unit environment, and facility environment. We trained 40 interviewers without specialized design experience to high interrater reliability with the room-level assessment. We used the three checklists to assess 1,988 resident room and bath environments, 131 nursing units, and 40 facilities in five states. From the data elements, we developed quantitative indices to describe the facilities according to environmentally relevant constructs such as function-enhancing features, life-enriching features, resident environmental controls, and personalization. Results: We reliably gathered data on a large number of environmental items at three environmental levels. Environments varied within and across facilities, and we noted many environmental deficits potentially relevant to resident quality of life. Implications: This research permits resident-specific data collection on physical environments and resident-level research using hierarchical analysis to examine the effects of specific environmental constellations.     Assessing internal bleeding from trauma is difficult. Non-invasive discriminationrs between the physiologic changes of exercise (or excitement) and injury could be useful, especially at locations with limited access to definitive medical care. In previous studies, we observed skin PCO2 parralleling or converging toward end-tidal PCO2 during exercise and diverging during blood loss.     "A Framework for agent-based computational economics in economic geography"

The name suggests that economists and geographers have been working together to build models. However, this is contrary to the fact. A dissonance has arisen between economists and geographers in the last decade. The source of the problem is methodological differences. The difference are vast enough where it is difficult to merge the methodology of economists with those of a geographer. However, recent advancement in agent--based computational economics (ACE) allows us to build a framework that meets the needs of economists and geographers.
