"Electron-impact excitation of carbon"
The B-spline R-matrix method was used to study electron-impact excitation of carbon from threshold to 60 eV. A multi-configuration Hartree-Fock method with non-orthogonal orbitals generated a very accurate target description. The close-coupling expansion included the bound and autoionizing states of neutral carbon derived from the (1s2)(2s2)(2p2),(1s2)(2s2)(2p)(3s),(1s2)(2s2)(2p3p),(1s2)(2s2)(2p3p),(1s2)(2s2)(2p4s),(1s2)(2s2p3), and (1s3)(2p4) configurations, plus pseudo-states to fully account for the polarizability of the ground state. Our predictions for the cross sections show significant discrepancies with those from previous calculations carried out with the standard R-matrix approach in a similar scattering model. These discrepancies are mostly due to the different target descriptions. The cross sections for excitation from the ground state (2p2)3p and the metastable (2p2)1d and (2p2)1s states also exhibit prominent resonance structures in the low-energy region. Zoning Bias II: A Study of Oregon's Zoning Commission Composition Restrictions
This article summarizes an empirical survey of Oregon planning commissions, to determine whether Oregon's occupational restrictions on commission appointments are working. An earlier survey found that zoning boards in Iowa were heavily populated with white-collar occupations, with many having a direct or indirect connection to land development work. Oregon's occupational restrictions appear to have reduced the number of appointees who are tied to development, but the commissions are still skewed toward white-collar representation. The article concludes that legal restrictions should be tightened to achieve the goal of broader occupational distribution

An examination of gender differences in elementary constructionist classrooms using Lego/Logo instruction

She can be contacted at: [email protected] disparity exists in many educational environments despite conscientious attempts to equalize opportunities and outcomes. Research studies indicate females are less likely to effectively engage in the use of technology for problem solving. However, in a two-year study of a Midwest elementary multi-age classroom, researchers studied computer-using activity of grade 1-5 students using Lego/ Logo technologies. Teachers put in practice learning strategies that encouraged both sexes to engage in computer-oriented problem solving. Through an experimental design, observation, and teacher assessment, the results suggest that, in practice, females demonstrate significant gains in self-efficacy using computer technology in this computer- rich classroom and report positive perceptions of self. Girls report more positive assessments of female technological competence and current computer use while boys do not waver from a belief in male technological superiority. Observation and teacher assessment indicate females are solving problems without asking for help. Furthermore, girls suggest that males are not more technologically savvy than they are. Girls also indicate that boys were not more likely to be adult computer users. On the other hand, boys report only a slight shift in their gendered beliefs. © 2005 by The Haworth Press, Inc. "Implementation of a genetic screen to elucidate proteins important for chromosome transmission"
The process of cell division is highly regulated in eukaryotic cells. Failure to transmit chromosomes accurately during cell division can result in cell death or abnormal growth (e.g., tumors). Proteins that associate in multisubunit complexes required for chromosome replication, structure, and segregation (e.g. histones) are typically expressed in the cell at precise levels. Alteration of these levels could lead to inappropriate stoichiometries of the complex subunits, possibly resulting in an abnormal complex structure and/or function. Students in Drake University's BIO106: Research in Genetics course designed and implemented a genetic screen to identify genes important for chromosome transmission. This screen involves a visual assay of the segregation of a yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) in cells tranformed with high copies of yeast genes. An increased copy number of a gene is expected to be correlated with increased amounts of the protein product. Transformation of a YAC-containing yeast strain with a high copy yeast genomic library resulted in 12,625 transformants. A visual screen of these transformants for YAC instability indicated that 123 display higher levels of YAC loss than the control strain; 40 were severely defective in chromosome segregation. In addition to characterization of these high copy plasmid transformants, the specific yeast genes responsible for chromosome instability when present at high copy will be identified. This genetic screen is expected to elucidate proteins that are components of multisubunit complexes that play a role in chromosome transmission.Drake University, College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Biology
Redesigning Public School Systems : A Qualitative Study Into The Potential For Utilizing Idealized Design To Create The "Next Generation" Of American Public Schools
126 leaves. Advisor: D. DarnellThe problem. To consider an alternative to traditional reform strategies and strategic
planning, the intent of this study was to inform those interested in designing school
systems capable of meeting current and future learning demands of the possibilities of
Idealized Design as a design methodology. Specifically, the problem was to analyze the
impact on participants in the process and their perceptions of the possibility of the new
design for their school districts. Participant perceptions were described and
recommendations for employing Idealized Design made.
Procedures. Qualitative methodology was employed due to the contextual nature of
Idealized Design. Twenty-nine teachers, administrators, board members, and community
members from two school districts involved in the Idealized Design process were randomly selected for interview and provided the opportunity to respond to a survey. Fifteen members participated - eight via face-to-face interviews and seven through an
open response questionnaire. Through these open-ended interviews, questionnaires, a
document review, and participation in the meetings, the impact of Idealized Design on
the designers and their perceptions of possibility for the Next Generation of schools were analyzed to develop conclusions, implications. and recommendations.
Findings. Respondents did find that their perceptions about schooling and design had
been altered through the Idealized Design experience. Respondents felt a greater sense
of commitment to the work and felt that the breadth and depth of their understanding
regarding the current set of interacting problems they faced were markedly improved.
They also indicated satisfaction with the amount of stakeholder input during the process,
leading them to feel more confident in pursuing significant changes for their schools.
Conclusions. Idealized Design appears to have the potential to impact the way in which
stakeholders view both the problems their community schools face and the solutions
afforded them.
Recommendations. Communities desiring to utilize Idealized Design need to carefully
consider their context and work to ensure that such a process can succeed. Idealized
Design has potential for districts and communities wishing to alter the conversation
around education. Idealized Design is a complex and involved process that requires
professional assistance until the methodology becomes more widely understood and practiced
