Inventing a “Self”: An Exploration of the Self-Portraiture of Nicolas Poussin and Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio
No full textIn this project, I aim to display the ways Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio and Nicolas Poussin, two artists often positioned as direct opposites to one another, are more similar than they are given credit for. I do this by examining the self-portraiture of each artist, a genre not often considered by art historians. I look at the way they represent themselves, the methods of representation, the context of the portraits, and the biographical and primary source information available for each artist. I conclude that both artists are different in style but share the urge to represent themselves in some sort of truthful manner and do so using the same technique, painting themselves from life in the mirror. I hope to uncover a more neutral view of both artists in relation to one another, beyond the mythologizing and amplification of their histories and differences
Measuring Multidimensional Meaning in Life
No full textMeaning in life is the feeling that one’s life is meaningful and is an important factor in psychological well-being (King & Hicks, 2021). Recently, scholars in the field proposed a tripartite model of meaning in life (Comprehension, Purpose, and Mattering) and developed the Multidimensional Existential Meaning Scale (MEMS) to measure the construct three-dimensionally (George & Park, 2017). Since no methodological review has been conducted for this new scale, this paper seeks to examine how this new scale has been used in the meaning in life research and to evaluate its psychometric evidence across populations. The review found general support for the three-factor structure and internal consistency of the scale across cultures, but some psychometric and theoretical issues were identified in the Mattering subscale. An examination of the studies that used the three-dimensional scale also showed that MEMS seems to have benefited the field of research by providing better conceptual clarity and specificity. However, more research is needed to evaluate whether MEMS can be used to measure the general, overarching meaning in life and whether newer trifactor meaning in life scales are better alternatives compared to MEMS

No full textBaby (Not Quite) Sign Language: A Comparative Analysis of ASL and Baby Sign Language Complexity and Ideologies
No full textAmerican Sign Language (ASL) users have long struggled for language accessibility and legitimacy in a hearing world. Meanwhile, Baby Sign Language (BSL) has entered the dominant mainstream in the last forty years as an “easy language” for parents to ease communication with prelingual infants and promote English acquisition. This study attempts to answer three main questions of structural and sociolinguistic nature: 1) What properties of human language does ASL possess that BSL lacks, and why? and 2) How do hearing parents characterize ASL and BSL, both individually and comparatively? How do these characterizations align with the linguistic legitimacy of both systems? Using Charles Hockett’s 16 design features of language (1960) as parameters, I argue for the former that 9 of the 16 features are either conditionally or not fulfilled by BSL, proving its non-language nature. I test the latter two questions through a forced-choice questionnaire experiment of 18 hearing parents, 10 of whom are users of BSL Despite the structural results suggesting the opposite, I find that hearing parents are more likely to overestimate BSL’s and correctly estimate ASL’s complexity and legitimacy
