No full textCenterfire Rifles are the primary tool of precision shooters. This sport involves firing projectiles at targets placed a minimum of 600 yards away with as much accuracy as possible, and thus demands extraordinary capabilities from the rifles used. Decades of engineering with an effort to increase the range, consistency, and safety of these tools has resulted in the modern era of shooting technology. We will achieve a background of a rifle’s function and the physics behind the firing process before investigating the methods of modeling and optimizing the behavior of a projectile after exit. Finally, we will discuss strides made in hearing safety through the development of suppressors

Evaluating Prosocial Behaviors: Outcomes, Measurements, & Future Directions
No full textProsocial behaviors are completed with the primary intent to aid others. Prosocial behaviors have persisted over time with benefits including increased mental health outcomes, ability to deal with stressors, higher self-esteem, and overall positive health benefits to the individual completing the behaviors (Ng & Diener, 2021; Liu et al., 2020; Hirani et al., 2022). Research has been conducted cross-culturally, with consistent findings of prosociality within different cultures showing positive benefits regarding predictors and findings (Gherghel et al., 2019). However, researchers disagree on the best methods to measure prosocial behaviors, and a variety of scales and behavioral tasks have been used in the literature to date. This paper provides a literature review on prosocial behaviors, examines the factors that enhance and deter prosocial behaviors, explores different measurement practices, and proposes future research to enhance the study of prosocial behaviors. By encouraging researchers to be transparent about how they define prosociality and their guidelines for measurement, research on prosocial behaviors can be generalizable and advanced in the future

No full textThe Boric Effect: An Analysis on the Impact of Political Events on Chilean Stock Returns
No full textElection outcomes play an important role in market expectations for countries as new leaders implement economic policies that can benefit or hurt an economy. When Chilean President Gabriel Boric won the 2021 election in Chile, he promised a new constitution giving the state more control over natural resources and increasing corporate taxes to replace a previous version created by the former leader, General Pinochet, one that boasts free market policies that has remained in power despite many attempts to overturn it. My goal is to test whether Boric’s policies and proposals of a new constitution effect stock market returns for Chile. I run an event study to predict whether Gabriel Boric’s presidency had a negative impact on the Chilean stock market. I consider two primary events, Gabriel Boric’s election to President and proposed new unfriendly market policies. From this event study I find that Boric announcing his campaign for president had statistically significant negative returns on the market. Surprisingly I find that his proposal for a $3.7 billion economic package had a positive effect on stock returns, despite containing many unfriendly market policies
The Role of Affect and Social Bias in Perception and Language Attitudes towards Chinese-accented English
No full textLanguage attitudes, or the assumptions people make about others based on language variety, and perception of speech, measured by intelligibility, comprehensibility, and accentedness, are malleable and can be affected by different listener factors. This pilot study examines how priming participants with a negatively, positively, or neutrally valenced reading passage about Chinese people, designed to induce a social bias around Chinese-accented people, affects perception and language attitudes measures. Participants reported a broad range of perceived identity of the speaker, which led to findings that were less straightforward due to the social bias from the reading passages, if present, not directly affecting the listening task for those who incorrectly identified the speaker’s L1. Another main finding was that participants who read the negative passage and reported feeling negative affect performed better on the intelligibility task than those who reported feeling more positive in the negative group
