Labors of the Heart: Experiences of Refugee Resettlement Organization Workers
Refugee resettlement organizations (RROs) within the United States are a necessary resource for individuals relocating with refugee status as they provide services to support long-term financial stability and independence. This thesis explores the impact that resettlement work has on RRO staff, focusing on how they continually navigate organizational realities, work culture, emotional management, and boundary setting. Semi-structured interviews with four direct care workers, participant observation of a resettlement agency’s education department, and online worker resources and testimonies, offer insight into how their personal and professional lives become entangled. I argue that with the volatility of refugee policies and the expectation for passion and flexibility within the field of resettlement, RROs rely heavily on the abilities of workers to be resilient, knowledgeable, and emotionally equipped. At the intersection of the sociology of work and occupations, medical anthropology, and international refugee law, this qualitative research offers an analysis of the sustainability of working for refugee resettlement organizations

Sharing Our Roots: A Radical Economy of Community Carework
Ecologies of care are communities of practice that build themselves through commoning the responsibility and practice of transnational, multispecies, place-based survival in the face of capitalist exploitation, alienation, and ruin. Commoning describes processes and projects founded upon sharing the natural wealth, tools, knowledge, and visions for care, drawing on Silvia Federici’s articulation of a Commons. Ecologies of care queer binaries of capitalist versus anticapitalist economic bodies, expanding possibilities for resistance. Sharing Our Roots is one such organization founded as an Agrarian Commons and working towards land and food access for marginalized groups in the local ecology of Northfield, Minnesota, United States. As a case study considered through the lenses of feminist and queer critiques of capitalism, Sharing Our Roots reveals the nuances of practicing shared economy in capitalism and celebrates possibilities for care across communities
The Impact of Landlord Type on Housing Insecurity: Evidence from Corporate and Individual Owners in the New York City Rental Housing Market
This paper investigates the relationship between the corporatization of the United States rental housing market and housing insecurity, examining whether large corporate landlords are more likely to evict tenants from New York City rental units as compared to their small-scale, “mom and pop” counterparts. Using a unique dataset that merges 2022 New York City eviction and property owner data, I construct a binary logistic regression model that allows me to predict eviction probability by landlord type, while controlling for other predictors of eviction. I find that corporate owners were 3.68 times more likely in 2022 to evict New York rental tenants than individual owners. This finding is statistically significant and validated by several robustness checks. Corporate evictors further exhibit greater levels of racial bias against Black tenants, with the gap in eviction probability between corporate and individual owners widening as a zip code’s Black population increases. This paper contributes to the growing literature examining housing insecurity in the context of ongoing institutional change in the U.S. housing market
Remote Sensing and Isotopic Analysis of Potential Zones of Groundwater Discharge in the Carleton College Arboretum
This paper utilizes remote sensing data analysis to identify potential zones of groundwater discharge in the Carleton College Arboretum, Northfield, MN. After zones had been identified, water samples were collected from each zone, where possible, for �� 18O testing, to be referenced against samples of local groundwater and rainwater in an attempt to validate the results of the remote sensing analysis. The remote sensing analysis resulted in the identification of six zones of interest in the Carleton College Arboretum. �� 18O testing of these zones returned inconclusive results
Investigating Environmental Effects on Sediment Trapping and Binding by Microbial Mats
Polygonal microbial mats are found in in the intertidal zone of Little Ambergris Cay (LAC) in the Turks and Caicos Islands, a \u3c2000-yr-old island composed mainly of ooid sand. They occur in locations both with and without mangroves. Mangroves play an important role in stabilizing and accumulating fine sediments, which contributes to protecting islands and coastlines as sea levels rise. Microbial mats can stabilize coarser, sand-sized sediment through trapping and binding, though it is not known how this contributes to island formation. We hypothesized that trapping and binding of sediment by microbial mats on LAC has contributed to the island’s formation during a period of net sea-level rise. We designed lab experiments to determine how quickly polygonal mats can trap and bind sediment in different experimental conditions: subtidal (fully subaqueous) without wave agitation and subtidal with wave agitation. Conditions were simulated in two different aquaria; mats were exposed to a 12-hour light cycle and submerged in artificial seawater. Ooid sand was added to the surface of replicate mat samples; mats were then incubated undisturbed for 8 hours. Ooid trapping and binding was characterized by imaging each mat hourly with a stereoscope for the next twelve hours, and thrice more in coming days. Each mat image was point counted to quantify how the proportion of ooids bound by cyanobacterial filaments increased over time. We found that in both environments, ooid loss occurred most rapidly in the first 5 hours of the experiment, and that filament growth occurred throughout the experiment. By the end of the experiment, there was more filament growth in the wave-agitated condition than the non-agitated condition. As the consequences of climate change continue to drive sea- level rise, microbial mat communities like those on LAC may be able to help protect islands by accumulating and stabilizing sediment rapidly
