The Interiors of Neutron Stars
No full textNeutron stars are some of the most exotic and mysterious objects in the universe, whose structure, composition and evolution are still being uncovered. The remote nature and small size of these compact objects make direct observation a challenge, forcing physicists to rely on theoretical frameworks to build models of neutron star interiors. Nevertheless, since their discovery there has been a wealth of research put forth concerning the interplay between various forces that keep a neutron star in equilibrium. This paper presents a theory-driven tour of a neutron star\u27s interior, starting with a discussion of how the star\u27s interior is expected to organize itself to prevent collapse against gravity. After a discussion of the significant forces involved, we then go through the star layer by layer to describe finer structures predicted to emerge. Where appropriate, these theoretical predictions are compared to selected works in the growing body of observational data

No full textWhat makes an indicative conditional true if its antecedent is false? Imagine I say to you, “If you ate the last chocolate, you’re a terrible person.” Things seem fairly simple if you really did eat the chocolate: in this case, the conditional is true if you are a terrible person and false if you are not. But what if you didn’t eat the chocolate in the first place?
My paper focuses on the theory that indicative conditionals are material conditionals, and I argue that this theory deserves neither the bland acceptance nor the bitter contempt with which people so often respond to it. If indicative conditionals are material conditionals, then all indicative conditionals with false antecedents are true. This may seem absurd. However, I argue that there are at least two strong reasons to consider the theory. First, the material conditional account makes a lot of sense if we already accept the doctrine of explosion. Assume that A is not the case: explosion tells us that if A also is the case, then every possible proposition is true; so perhaps it makes sense that when A is false, the conditional ⌜A → B⌝ will be true for any B. Secondly, the material conditional account seems necessary to accommodate the highly plausible analysis of categorical statements and propositions as universally quantified conditionals. While possible-worlds semantics is a strong rival of the material conditional, it cannot accommodate this analysis of categorical statements, which may be a sign that it is not the right theory of indicative conditionals
Navigating Space on The Cultural Identity Spectrum: How Second Generation Gambians Form and Express Identity in Minnesota
No full textAs a demographic, second-generation Gambians are constantly navigating along a polarized cultural identity spectrum. Using data collected and analyzed from ten in-depth semi- structed interviews and three ethnographic observations, I explore how second generation Gambians in Minnesota navigate the cultural identity spectrum by examining how they form and express identity in the United States, and how that is influenced by different physical and social spaces (school, home, Dara, Brooklyn Park, Value Foods African Market, the Gambian Community, and friends). Through the development of six spaces of belonging to conduct my analysis (Spaces of Assimilation, Spaces of Enforcement, Spaces Connection, Spaces where they felt more American, Spaces where they felt more Gambian, and Spaces where they felt more Gambian-American), I find that different physical and social spaces have various effects on identity formation, expression, and belonging on the second generation
