    Should Medication-Assisted Treatment Be Integrated into Criminal Justice Systems for Opioid Use Disorder?

    Opioid use disorders (OUD) are highly prevalent among criminal justice populations. Individuals reporting opioid use are significantly more likely to be involved with the criminal justice system compared to people with no opioid use, with the level of justice involvement increasing with one’s level of opioid use. The impact of opioid overdose deaths has led to a reduced life expectancy for justice-involved individuals in the United States, partly due to the challenges associated with community re-entry following incarceration. Three medications have been approved—methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone—by the FDA for pharmacotherapy treatment of OUD. Despite the accumulating evidence of medication-assisted treatment’s (MAT) medical value in treating OUD, current uses of MAT appear to be highly underutilized across correctional institutions. Opioid addiction, along with its withdrawal symptoms and recovery, represents a serious medical condition that demands attention and management from criminal justice agencies. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the impacts of MAT for treating opioid addiction and offers recommendations for expanding the implementation of MAT among incarcerated populations

    Our Senior Integrative Exercise (or more colloquially, “Comps”) was a two term course that focused on mathematical modeling with the ultimate goal being to compete in the 2024 Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM). In the fall, we learned different techniques in mathematical modeling; we briefly touched on a wide variety of math that could be useful in the competition. In the winter, we worked on a larger modeling project, where we tried to identify the location(s) of the most spoken languages in 2053. Though we weren’t able to get very far with this practice problem, we were able to learn a lot about each other’s working habits. This allowed us to devise a really nice task breakdown, so that each and everyone of us could play to our strengths while complementing each others’ during the MCM. The math practice was also incredibly helpful, as this unfinished model provided a lot of scaffolding for the actual competition. The MCM is a 100-hour (Feb 1-5), international competition in math modeling for teams of three undergraduates. Each year, there is a choice of three problems: one discrete, one continuous, and one heavily data driven. We selected the discrete problem, “Searching for Lost Submersibles”, which required us to analyze the safety of submersible tours of shipwrecks off the Greek coast and build models to locate lost submersibles in case of an emergency. We wrote up our results in a 25 page paper, including a short, non-technical letter to the Greek government arguing for the safety of the tours. It was an incredibly arduous weekend, but we ultimately came out of the competition feeling really good about ourselves. The paper, good or bad, was entirely ours and ours alone; and there’s beauty in that.\ Competing in the MCM was one of the most intense and rewarding experiences of our college careers. This taught us a lot about ourselves in high stress, low sleep environments. There were throw-ups, heartbreaks, code bugs, writer’s block and math stresses, but at the end of the day, we were incredibly proud of ourselves for pushing through until the end. We were silly, we danced, we helped Thien with new earrings for Winter Ball, and we turned into literal submersibles in Cowling Gym because it felt good to just...submerge. We were stressed out of our minds, but oh it felt so good to rise to the challenge like that

    “Even the Loudest Black Girls are Silenced in Schools”: Black Girlhood, The School-to-Confinement Pathway, & Reimagining Education

    Academic research has consistently highlighted the pervasive educational inequities endured by Black children in the United States. However, much of the prevailing dialogue concerning the school-to-prison pipeline (STPP) has centered on the conditions and experiences of Black boys. As an alternative concept to the STPP, the school-to-confinement pathway (STCP) scrutinizes the complex interplay of racial, gender, and class disparities that marginalize Black girls within their learning environments (Morris, 2016). Advocates for equitable education have emphasized the stigmatization and marginalization of Black femininity as a pivotal factor contributing to the disproportionate mistreatment of Black girls in schools, leading to various forms of confinement. While recent studies have shown that exclusionary disciplinary measures have analogous repercussions on both Black girls and boys, there is a paucity of narrative-based research centered specifically on the experiences of Black girls. This study employs a Black feminist framework with a narrative- and phenomenological-inquiry approach to conduct interviews with key stakeholders, including students, educators, non-profit employees, and policymakers. The findings from 18 interviews, participant observations, and digital ethnographic analysis—based in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area—reveal that many individuals adopt key principles aligned with those of Black feminism in their efforts to disrupt the STCP, emphasizing lived experience-based wisdom, a critical evaluation of conventional pedagogical practices, and the implementation of emancipatory learning environments. This research fills a significant gap in the literature by shedding light on the diverse experiences of Black girls along this path and suggesting strategies for reimagining a more equitable educational environment from the perspective of Black feminism

    Generational Bridges: Exploring the influence of age at adoption on adopted parents’ intergenerational transmission of education

    The current paper looks at the effect of age of a child at adoption on the educational outcomes of the adoptees. Traditional studies tend to focus solely on the education of the adoptive parents as a predictor of the highest grade completed for the adopted child. The assumption is made that the child is adopted at birth. Previous research has shown that certain children spend extended amounts of time in the foster care system. This study found a significant effect and interaction with age at adoption. This study suggests that age at adoption is an important factor that should be incorporated into future analysis on the intergenerational transmission of educational outcomes for adoptees. Additional possible explanations for these results and suggestions for future research are also discussed

    The Hot Dog Play

    The script of The Hot Dog Play was the first part of a two-part comps project. For this English comps, I wrote a ninety-minute play that would later be produced and performed by myself and my colleague, Tosh Le. It tells the story of a pair of former childhood best friends reuniting. One is Louis, a lucratively successful author. The other is Cruncher, the manager of a hot dog joint (where there meeting takes place). It is all fun and games until it gets out that Louis is not just there to catch up, but to use Cruncher as inspiration for his next book. The script aims to combine the realism of characters from plays like August Wilson\u27s Two Trains Running and Sam Shepard\u27s True West with elements of theatrical absurdism seen in Samuel Beckett\u27s Waiting for Godot. The language-based American Absurd of Edward Albee was a key inspiration for a middle ground of these two genres

    Avian Magnetoreception: The Radical Pair Mechanism

    Birds have long fascinated scientists with their ability to accurately navigate vast distances with few physical markers. One probable explanation is that birds are able use information about the direction and inclination of the global magnetic field (GMF) like compass markers. The radical pair theory proposes that the interaction of a radical pair with the GMF allows for weak field detection in a protein found in the retina of migratory birds called cryptochrome. In this analysis we will show that, due to the lifting of degenerate energy levels, the cryptochrome radical pair coherently evolves between spin states at a rate dependent on the incident angle and inclination of the external GMF. This magnetic field dependent spin evolution gives rise to distinct products that could interact with sensory cells in the retina and impact avian visual stimuli allowing birds to “see” the GMF and gain the directional cues necessary for their precise navigation
