    Cosmic Inflation

    Our observable universe is incredibly flat and boring. Current observations suggest that the spatial curvature of the universe is near zero, and the cosmic microwave background points to an early universe in thermal equilibrium. To understand how this can mechanistically happen, we\u27ll explore the physics of cosmic inflation which postulates that space expanded roughly 25 orders of magnitude within the first 10-34 seconds of the universe\u27s life. Using results from field theory and general relativity, we\u27ll see how introducing a new scalar field into the universe can naturally give rise to exponential expansion during the birth of the universe. Finally, we\u27ll investigate how modifications to general relativity itself can produce an inflationary era

    Spilling the Beans on Idioms: A Syntactic Journey

    The general fixed nature of the syntax and the non-compositionality of meaning for idioms continues to pose problems for generative syntactic theory. The meaning of idioms cannot be known from putting the meaning of the parts together, but they can only have those meanings across certain syntactic structures. Additionally, different idioms have different levels and capabilities of being syntactically flexible. It’s been argued that defining the semantics of idioms is the way to account for idioms. This paper analyzes a few semantic approaches but ultimately settles on syntactic approaches. This paper will analyze two syntactic theories that stem from more recent syntactic research. Firstly, is Harley & Stone (2013) which builds on McGinnis (2002) and Marantz (1997) to attempt to account for idioms with locality constraints within Distributed Morphology. Within DM they expand the contextual information that is available post-syntax. Bruening (2020) brings counterexamples to the locality constraints and attempts to explain idioms by defining the heads of idioms and how they phase control each other. In contrast to Harley & Stone, Bruening expands the role of the lexicon within this derivation. I argue that both of these theories generate accounted patterns of non-transformed idioms but overgenerate when it comes to syntactic operations. At a higher level, I argue that neither of these theories ‘better’ solve idioms since they expand on either the encyclopedia or lexicon without explaining the constraints on those mechanisms

    Do Unto Others as You Would Have Them Do Unto You: A Systematic Review of Perceived Discrimination and Intraminority Intergroup Relations

    Intraminority intergroup relationship refers to attitudes and behaviors between members of different marginalized or disadvantaged social groups (Burson & Godfrey, 2020). This systematic review synthesizes a recent body of experimental research on how and why minority groups’ own experiences with discrimination can affect intraminority intergroup relations (e.g., Craig & Richeson 2014). This review discusses theoretical perspectives (e.g., The Common Ingroup Identity Model and Social Identity Threat) and documented how certain social groups were studied more often than others in this literature. This paper examines categories of outcome measures and analyzes the validation evidence for those measures and patterns in the construct validation and reporting practices (e.g., reliance on Cronbach’s alpha as the only psychometric information reported). This review also considers which independent variables (e.g., making ingroup’s disadvantages salient) were related to which outcome measures (e.g., intergroup emotions) and identifies inconsistent findings, such as when making the ingroup’s disadvantages salient did not affect the same outcome measures (e.g., positive emotions toward outgroups) across different studies. Finally, this paper proposes recommendations for future research with regards to conducting conceptual replications to systematically examine understudied social groups and multiple outcome measures as well as improving measurement practices

    Beyond Arrow: Revealing True Preferences

    In this paper, we examine the existence of strict strategy-proof voting mechanisms. Using Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem we prove any rational social choice function that respects Pareto optimality, independence of irrelevant alternatives, and monotonicity must be dictatorial. Next, we use the Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorem to show that strategy-proof voting mechanisms are necessarily dictatorial. Then, we use the Gibbard-Satterthwaite correspondence theorem to establish a one-to-one correspondence between social choice functions under Arrow’s construction and voting mechanisms under Gibbard and Satterthwaite’s construction. Finally, we extend these results by considering other voting mechanisms and discussing Vickrey-Clarke-Groves mechanisms

    Homogeneous Catalytic Conversion of Carbon Dioxide to Methanol

    Atmospheric accumulation of carbon dioxide due to human activities has increased significantly over recent years as a result of fossil fuel combustion. Recycling carbon dioxide, a highly oxidized one-carbon waste material, into useful deoxygenated fuels has the potential to close the loop and prevent further greenhouse gas buildup. Methanol, an important one-carbon feedstock for many industrial processes with the potential to become a sustainable and clean burning fuel, is one such deoxygenated product. Dr. Karen Goldberg has investigated the catalytic deoxygenation of carbon dioxide with hydrogen gas as a promising route towards the fossil fuel-free production of methanol. Her research on this transformation centers on the careful design of homogeneous catalysts, with an eye towards understanding their reaction mechanisms so the catalysts and conditions can be optimized. Join us to learn more about this exciting topic in organometallic chemistry
