    The Algebra Behind Card Shuffling

    No full text
Card shuffling is a seemingly simple process with deep mathematical implications. This presentation explores the algebraic structures behind shuffling, particularly through group theory and permutations. We investigate how shuffling techniques can be represented as elements of a symmetric group, analyze the order of specific shuffles, and discuss the mathematical principles behind randomness and mixing

The Impact of Nurse-Led Environmental Controls on Insomnia in Elderly Acute Care Inpatients Research Question: Does teaching nurses to control the patient environment (I) in acute care in-patients aged 65+ (P) reduce insomnia compared to current practice (Q1H rounding) (C) from 67.4% to less than 30% as measured by the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) (O)? Background and Significance: 67.4% of hospitalized patients report experiencing insomnia from sleep disturbances, which can significantly impact their recovery and overall health outcomes. Nurses can address these disruptions by monitoring noise, light exposure, and staff interruptions. Sample methods: The literature review search keywords were sleep hygiene, sleep hygiene therapy, improved sleep, factors affecting sleep, sleep in hospitalized patients, insomnia, delirium, sleep disorders, acute-care sleep therapy, med-surg sleep therapy, geriatric, ages 65+. The search was conducted using the databases CINAHL and PubMed, resulting in 75 research studies. After applying filters for the last 5 years, RN author or application, RCT or quasi-experimental, and English language, the sample yielded 10. Sample: Three studies on insomnia and non-pharmacological interventions for improvement in sleep hygiene. Results: The body of evidence shows that environmental control interventions are statistically significant in reducing insomnia severity in acute care inpatients aged 65+, as measured by the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Conclusion: Implementing nurse-led environmental modifications to improve sleep quality in acute inpatients aged 65+ is recommended as a change in practice. Future research should explore the long-term effects of these interventions on patient outcomes related to insomnia and hospitalization-related complications

    Improving Nurse Burnout

    Get PDF
Our proposal explores the topic of nurse burnout which directly impacts turnover rates, job satisfaction and patient care and quality. Implications to this issue include emotional and physical exhaustion, increased medical errors, poor patient satisfaction and reduced productivity. To combat nurse burnout, we recommend the implementation of a wellness program. We have taken the time to research and outline a potential timeline, budget and plan of action for this wellness program. To increase social support to nurses this program will involve structured, biweekly check-ins with charge nurses, nurse managers and directors. The goal of this program is to counteract the rising negative outcomes in today’s nursing climate. To measure the effectiveness of this program we will evaluate nurse retention rates, patient satisfaction scores, improved staff morale and decreased rates of medical errors

    Cervilite Medical Wearable Device

Brittany Baker Belmont University March 29, 2025 Abstract Cervilite is a cutting-edge medical wearable device assisting neck and back discomfort with different postures while simultaneously improving the user’s body posture and endurance. Cervilite is engineered to attend to comfort with the potential for multiple positions, as it is height adjustable with respect to body and head size. The padded headpiece with a lazy susan attachment allows total freedom of the head in all directions, keeping the user’s head free to move. Cervilite aims to improve the user’s ability to move while enhancing the ability to be upright for an extended period by minimizing discomfort and strain. This flexible design was created for users who endure chronic discomfort to be mobile recreationally, as well as improve physical endurance and toughness

Space Odyssey mobile app and board game for vaping and smoking

    Get PDF
Brittany Baker Belmont University March 29, 2025 Abstract Space Odyssey is a creative initiative designed to reduce the stigma around vaping and smoking while raising awareness of their risks and healthier alternatives. Due to negative judgment, open conversations about vaping and smoking are often avoided, leading to a lack of education and awareness. To address this, Space Odyssey combines a social mobile app and an interactive board game. The app offers a safe digital space for education and discussion, while the board game encourages social interaction and community dialogue. By blending technology with personal connection, Space Odyssey aims to empower people to make informed decisions, eliminate stigma, and promote healthier, judgment-free conversations

Preventing Loneliness and Increasing Student Engagement in First-Generation College Students

    Get PDF
As higher education institutions work to diversify and expand their student populations, one topic that requires ongoing consideration is retention rates. First-generation college students make up a significant portion of undergraduate classes (Skomsvald, 2015); however, they are also the population least likely to see their degrees to completion (Radunzel, 2021). This suggests there may be barriers keeping these students from collegiate success, which we predicted to be loneliness and a lack of student engagement (Barreto et al., 2021; Peplau & Perlman, 1982). This study investigated several predictors of student engagement via loneliness in first-generation college students. First-generation college students (N = 85; Mage = 30.64) completed an online survey measuring demographics, emotional intelligence, extraversion, neuroticism, community involvement, loneliness, social-self compassion, and higher education student engagement. Loneliness was not a significant mediator in any of the models tested. Future researchers should examine other possible predictors of loneliness and/or student engagement in first-generation students to further understand ways to increase retention rates for such students

    Three Impressions

    No full text
Three Impressions is a set of three pieces composed for various trumpets and piano. The first piece, Impressions of Solitude (written for Bb trumpet and piano), is a flowing but melancholy piece in ternary form that showcases eighth note syncopation in the piano part and moving melodic lines in the trumpet part. The piece ends with a trumpet cadenza before finally settling on an unresolved dominant chord. The second piece, Impressions of Shadows (written for mellophone/harmon muted Bb trumpet and piano), is a free-flowing jazz-like conversation between the trumpet and piano players that allows great creative liberty for the performers. Although the chords used in this piece are more traditional, the open style of the piece was heavily influenced by that of modal jazz players, especially Miles Davis. The piece is also in ternary form, built on a modified blues progression that is improvised on by the trumpet player upon the return of the A section. The third piece, Impressions of Light (written for piccolo trumpet in A and piano), is a Baroque-style, concerto-like piece in rondo form. The piece uses the full range of the piccolo trumpet and culminates with a piccolo trumpet cadenza before the return of the theme with the piano. Overall, Three Impressions is a journey through multiple different styles (and instruments) that begins dark and melancholy and finishes radiant and upbeat. This is reflected throughout the work in the instruments, keys, and styles represented
