Generating Some Buzz: Pollinator Gardens and Enrichment
In this presentation, we discuss our ongoing project concerning pollinator gardens and schools as part of the Honors Scholars\u27 Collaborative. Pollinator gardens are gardens created to facilitate and protect the symbiotic relationship between native pollinators and pollen-producing plants. Pollinator gardens are often used to combat the threats posed by invasive species and urban sprawl. In this project, our group collaborated with the Tennessee Environmental Council to install a pollinator garden at a local elementary school. We also helped to design a pollinator-themed board game as part of an ongoing initiative to teach kids about the importance of pollinators and native plants
Sport for Inclusion: Advocating for Adaptive Sports and People with Disabilities
Sports are often undervalued in India, with many families prioritizing careers in fields like engineering and medicine over athletics (Tewari, 2021). This cultural sentiment extends to people with disabilities, where adaptive sports receive little attention despite 4.3% (around 61 million) of India\u27s population living with a disability (MOSPI, 2021). Adaptive sports, however, play a crucial role in promoting physical health, mental well-being, and socialization, particularly in rural areas (Chen et al., 2024). The Sittruli Foundation, a non-governmental organization in India, offers wheelchair basketball, swimming, and running programs for people with disabilities. The foundation faced several challenges in its mission to empower para-athletes in India, including limited transportation, funding, resources, and advertising. As an independent organization, the foundation\u27s resources were constrained, making it difficult to expand its services. Key needs included developing mobile and internet platforms for athletes and coaches, such as profile management tools, sports interest applications, online training for coaches, and a donor connection platform. Additionally, the foundation required a database for wheelchair-accessible accommodations and tools to support grant applications and explore global para-athletic opportunities. To address these needs, we assisted them with back-end/website operations, using Salesforce for Nonprofits to enhance their engagement, streamline analytics, and personalize relationships with donors. Our project also aimed to educate Belmont University students about the powerful impact of adaptive sports. In April, we hosted a Physical Well Core event with special guest Liza Corso, a local Paralympic athlete, medalist, and student at Lipscomb University. By showcasing her story, students learned more about adaptive sports locally and globally, contributing to the Sittruli Foundation’s mission of fostering inclusion and reducing stigma
What Is GDPR? How It Protects Your Personal Information
This presentation is about the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a privacy law from the European Union that protects people’s personal information. Even though it’s a European law, it affects people and businesses all over the world. You’ll learn what kind of data is protected, what rights you have over your personal information, and what companies and governments are required to do to keep it safe. This talk is helpful for students, parents, staff, business owners, and anyone who wants to understand how their data is used and how they can protect it
Solving the Cube: A Group Theoretical Approach to Understanding the Rubik’s Cube
Understanding how to solve a rubik’s cube usually often involves finding an algorithm that consistently works. But, how many algorithms are there and can they be mathematically defined? Group Theory allows us to understand the properties of a rubik’s cube and how these properties operate.By recognizing the rubik’s cube as a Permutation Group, we can define certain properties of the cube and understand how rotating the cube’s faces changes the groups elements.
This presentation will explore the mathematical concepts of the Rubik’s Cube. This includes its group structure, how it follows permutation group properties, and the fundamental elements of the Rubik’s Cube. The fundamental elements of 8 corner cubes, 12 edges, and 6 center cubes, offer insight into how this group is going to act with specific elements. We will discuss the permutation constraints, the cube’s limitations, and how these factors affect the group’s structure. Additionally, we will be calculating the group size for the actual group and then analyze how applying certain restrictions affects its size. Ultimately, this presentation will highlight the importance of the rubik’s cube in group theory and the implications of mathematical analysis with this structure. Through the analysis, we will see how a classic puzzle can serve as an example of abstract algebra in the real world
ILC Psalm Projects
Each group will present an exegesis of their chosen psalm, a historical background of the musical setting of the psalm, a biography of the composer, a discussion of the musical elements in the setting, and a performance of their own arrangement
ACUITY-BASED NURSE STAFFING
As future RNs preparing to enter the workforce in a few short months, we chose to explore the effects of nurse-to-patient ratios, specifically acuity-based staffing assignments. The Summit Medical Center’s 4th and 5th floor medical-surgical units currently utilize a fixed numerical assignment system, not considering the complexity of individual patients when assigning patients to nurses. This form of assignment-making poses potential problems with unequal workloads, contributes to an increase in nurse burnout, and potentially compromised care. Shifting to an acuity-based staffing ratio by utilizing a validated acuity assessment tool will work to improve patient outcomes and nurses’ job satisfaction. Such a change would require the combined efforts of nurse leaders, hospital management, and administrative and IT support, but the long-term benefits are undeniable. The effectiveness of the acuity-based staffing ratios would be measured using a combination of qualitative and quantitative data, such as patient outcomes, complication rates, medication errors, and surveys to assess nurse satisfaction with the change. Our goal is to improve the culture of care on these units by enhancing patient safety and supporting nurses in their ability to provide the highest quality of care to each of their patients
Importance of Nursing Hourly Rounding on a Step-Down Unit to Decrease Falls and Call Bell Usage
Previous research shows that not performing hourly rounding is associated with increased patient falls, worse patient outcomes, decreased patient satisfaction with their hospital stay, and more frequent call bell usage. We chose to focus on implementing hourly rounds on the step-down unit at St. Thomas West in Nashville. The implementation plan includes hosting an educational seminar for staff nurses in which the process and importance of hourly rounding will be discussed. At this time, the charge nurse will also review the incentives and new charting system. We also allocated finances to the IT department to implement a section for hourly rounding in the chart that is mandatory for all nurses to complete each shift. The total budget for our plan is $5350. The implementation timeline is six months, during which time the IT department will add the new section to the chart, and the staff meeting will be planned and attended. Our sustainability plan includes a monthly chart audit, educational seminars every six months, incentive free lunches for nurses who complete their hourly rounds, and an hourly rounding section on the whiteboard in the patients’ room that the nurse is to check off
GDPR Uncovered: What U.S. Businesses and Professionals Need to Know
As businesses become increasingly global, understanding the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is essential for professionals across all industries. This presentation will explore how GDPR affects U.S. businesses looking to expand into the European market, as well as companies handling European consumer data. Attendees will learn about key GDPR compliance requirements and why business professionals, regardless of their industry, should be aware of these regulations. This session will provide valuable insights into one of the world\u27s most influential privacy laws
