The Branch Waitlist Project
The problem that we have found is that The Branch has a limited number of English education classes, as well as limited numbers of teachers and other opportunities for students to engage and learn. The waitlist for the English learning classes is about 150 students long, and this study will explore a way to provide students with helpful resources for everyday life while they are waiting to get into actual classes. This will be done through research about the topics that students struggle the most with in their everyday lives. Our specific objectives include providing those within the waitlist with temporary online resources and peer conversation style code-switching opportunities to better their language learning, even while not taking classes. The significance of our work is to help ease the process of language learning in marginalized communities and make it more accessible for everyone. In addition, we want to create a sense of community and sharing of cultures for all students. For our research, we will implement a mixed methods approach, including surveys/interviews and quantitative data collection
The Impact of Daily Hassles on Depression and Anxiety in College Students
Daily hassles are small events that interfere with daily life and can have a negative impact on mental health (Kanner et al.,1981; Pinquart, 2009). Anxiety is an emotional state characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts, and physical changes like increased blood pressure (Rabner et al., 2024), while depression is a mental illness associated with impaired functioning and reduced quality of life, with a range of physiological, social and mental symptoms (Greer et al., 2010). College students are at increased risk for excessive stress as well as the development of mental disorders, and daily hassles have been linked to stress, depressive symptoms, and anxious symptoms in this demographic (Lipson et al., 2019; Tajalli & Ganbaripanah, 2010). Because previous studies have found evidence that some personality traits are related to anxious and depressive states (Karsten et al., 2012; Shi et al., 2015), this study aimed to examine daily hassles as predictors of anxiety and depression after controlling for personality. Late adolescent (aged 18-22; M = 21.0; SD = 0.97) college students (N = 95) filled out a survey on Qualtrics that measured demographics, daily hassles, anxiety, depression, and personality. Results indicated that, after controlling for personality, higher daily hassles significantly predicted higher anxiety, b = 3.01, SE = 0.83, t(88) = 3.65, p \u3c .001, 95% CI [1.37, 4.66], sr2 = .08, and depression, b = 0.17, SE = 0.05, t(88) = 3.30, p \u3c .001, 95% CI [0.07, 0.28], sr2 = .07. Results suggest that daily hassles have an overall significant impact on mental health in late adolescent college students
Analyzing the Legislative Attack on the Public School Systems
This paper examines House Bill 0793 of Tennessee which specifically targets undocumented students and challenges the long-standing Supreme Court decision in Plyler v. Doe. The 1982 ruling established that school districts do not have a rational basis to deny access to public education based on a child’s immigration status. Recent legislative action in Tennessee aims to undermine this decision by proposing legislation that requires the collection of citizenship status information from students, violating the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974. This Act ensures that parents have the right to control access to their children’s educational records and prohibits unnecessary disclosures such as immigration status. Requiring this information could lead to racial profiling, create fear among immigrant families, and discourage enrollment in public schools. Furthermore, Tennessee\u27s passage of the Education Freedom Act of 2025, a statewide school voucher program, allows public funds to be redirected to private schools, while explicitly excluding students based on their immigration status. Sponsors Representative William Lamberth and Senator Bo Watson argue that educating undocumented immigrants creates a financial burden for the Tennessee Department of Education. HB0793 not only threatens the future of public education, but represents a direct challenge to the fundamental rights of undocumented students, worsening racial and socio-economic inequalities. These types of legislation pose a threat to Social Work values, specifically social justice principles and the dignity and worth of individuals
Policy Analysis of SB 1123: Sexual Assault Response Team Statewide Coordinator
Sexual Assault Response Teams (SART) were first introduced in Tennessee in 2023 through Tennessee Title 38 and were intended to be fully implemented by 2024. However, this did not happen and as a result, strengthening of SART policies has been a focus of the Tennessee General Assembly. Senate Bill 1123 advocates for creating a statewide coordinator for the Sexual Assault Response Teams in Tennessee. Sexual assault is a widespread and incredibly pertinent social welfare issue that social workers encounter across a wide spectrum. Senate Bill 1123 has an initiative towards ensuring that there are teams equipped with the proper resources to be competent in identifying, intervening, reporting, and advocating for sexual assault prevention and response within a variety of workplaces. Having a sexual assault response coordinator would help improve the efficacy of the existing SART teams and verify that proper training is in place. The addition of this position makes it more feasible for the SART teams to be properly organized so that the initiative towards advocating for sexual assault prevention, identification, and rehabilitation is enforced. The SART coordinator will be an employee of the Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence and will be obligated to work closely with the executive director to create sexual assault training programs, oversee the SART teams, ensure that laws are upheld, and provide necessary resources. To make the impact that this law seeks, there is a need for grants from the Department of Finance and Administration and the Office of Criminal Justice Programs. Currently, only 15 of the 95 counties in Tennessee comply with the SART team law, which is why implementing Senate Bill 1123 is crucial for addressing sexual assault in the state
Nutrition and Heart Health Measured Through Community Based Participatory Research in Girls in Mexico City Aged 13-24
The World Health Organization estimates that a third of the world, 3 billion people, do not have access to or the proper education on safe, nutritious food (WHO, 2023). The World Health Organization also found that the leading cause of death among people living in Mexico is ischemic heart disease, which causes one\u27s heart to not get an adequate blood supply (WHO, 2024). From a young age, health education on nutrition and proper exercise habits can transform individual lives and communities by promoting inclusion, decreasing noncommunicable diseases, and aiding in a sustainable lifestyle (UNESCO, 2024). In Mexico, health education is not enforced in schools, contributing to the higher than regional average rate of obesity, “35.7% of adult women and 27.0% of adult men” (Global Nutrition Report, 2020). Dale Vuelta, a sports media company in Mexico City, promotes community well-being in young, school-aged girls by providing female soccer players with connections to football leagues, advocating for female inclusion in sports, and promoting community female sporting events. Although Dale Vuelta promotes health by encouraging physical play, the company would benefit from nutritional focused resources and heart health focused resources, to encourage a holistic approach to health education. Therefore, this study, which works in collaboration with Dale Vuelta, aims to identify the educational gap in nutrition and heart health among girls and women in Mexico City. In addition, the findings of this study were used to create an educational curriculum tailored to Dale Vuelta. Feedback from Dale Vuelta’s employees and participants informed the development of the curriculum at all phases. Utilizing Community Based Participatory Research methods such as interviews and surveys with the participating players of the Dale Vuelta media company, a holistic, educational program for healthy eating and heart health promotion was created explicitly aimed at the goal of long-lasting healthy habits for girls in Mexico City
Romantic Security Within Mixed Personality Type Relationships
Previous research has revealed that personality traits play a role in attraction and romantic compatibility (Ross, 2018). However, there is limited research when it comes to observing the role that introversion-extraversion plays in correlating with relationship satisfaction. The presented study investigates the relationship between introversion-extraversion, romantic preferences, and satisfaction within a relationship. We hypothesized that individuals in romantic relationships will feel more secure with someone of the opposite personality type. Participants consisted of Belmont Psychology students who were in relationships. Participants completed two measures, Eysenck’s Personality Inventory and Relationships Attachment Scale. The study utilizes a multiple regression study design. By looking at the impact that introversion-extraversion has on romantic preferences and security, our research aims to better understand how personality traits influence relationship satisfaction and emotional security within a relationship. Implications and future directions of these initial findings are discussed
The Relationship Between the Facets of Extraversion and Exercise Habits
The majority of adults in the US do not meet recommended levels of physical activity (Wilson & Dishman 2014). Research suggests that there could be a link between these low levels of physical activity and poorer mental health. (Davis, et al 2021). Previous research has suggested that personality traits like extraversion, neuroticism, and (as defined by the Big Five Personality Traits) can have a moderating effect on the relationship of physical activity enjoyment and habit. The current study seeks to observe the relationship between the extraversion personality trait and exercise habits. Participants consisted of Belmont University students enrolled in Scientific Psychology, General Psychology, or Introduction to Psychological Science courses. Participants filled in a Qualtrics survey assessing their levels of gregariousness, assertiveness, excitement-seeking, and positive emotion (facets of extraversion), as well as their exercise habits (frequency, intensity, preference of group or individual activities, and reason for exercise motivation). We hypothesize that levels of gregariousness will positively correlate with preference of group-based activities, levels of assertiveness will positively correlate with a preference for higher intensity activities, levels of excitement-seeking will positively correlate with frequency of high intensity exercises, higher levels of positive emotion will be associated with exercising for enjoyment, and levels of extraversion overall will positively correlate with frequency of exercise. The implications of this study suggest that understanding your own personality can do more than affect your relationships, and knowing what works best for your personality may allow you to achieve greater fitness success
