INTELLECTUAL CAPITAL PRACTICES AND FINANCIAL EFFICIENCY: A MEDIATING ROLE OF BANKS’ PERFORMANCE: EVIDENCE FROM THE BANKING SECTOR OF PAKISTAN
The study attempts to examine the impact of intellectual capital(IC) practices (i.e. human capital, structural capital and relationalcapital practices) on financial efficiency through mediating the roleof bank performance. We collected data for 518 banks’ professionalsthrough questionnaire and use the direct path way and multipleregression to examine the impact of IC practices on mediating variable(bank performance) and mediating variable on dependent variable(financial efficiency). The results reveal that the proposed hypothesesare statistically significant (p<0.01) and that banks’ performancepartially mediates the relationship between IC practices and banks’financial efficiency. This study provides valuable insights on theimpact of IC practices on financial efficiency of banks throughmediation of bank performance. The tested theoretical relationshipreveals that banks which are more involved in IC practices get betterresults than their competitors
FACTORS AFFECTING THE BEHAVIOR OF GOVERNMENT AUDITORS FOR THE SURVEILLANCE OF THE PUBLIC SECTOR OF PAKISTAN
This research is intended to present the important factorswhich affect the behavior of government auditors, who are responsiblefor the surveillance of the public sector of Pakistan. Governmentauditors bring accountability and transparency through financial, regulatory and compliance audits of the public sector. The behaviorof government auditors has been studied through a model whichconsists of four independent variables-human resource practices, audit facilities and external factors. A questionnaire with five pointLikert scale has been developed. Three hundred government auditorswere selected as a sample of the study. The response rate remained at83%. Simple and multiple linear regression have been applied to testthe relationship between the independent and the dependentvariables. It is concluded that HR practices, audit facilities, externalfactors and behavior of the auditee have positive and significantrelationship with the behavior of auditors. If these factors arestrengthened, the auditors can work in an effective manner
ALUATION OF MUTUAL FUNDS AND SELECTION ABILITIES OF FUND MANAGERS IN PAKISTAN
Mutual funds are decent tools to encourage savings andinvestments, especially in developing nations like Pakistan whichrely heavily on foreign aids. This study explores the mutual fundperformance in Pakistan by using seven different performancemeasures, i.e. Sharpe, Treynor, Sortino, Information, Jensen Alpha,M2/RAP, Fama decomposition measures. This study covers a periodranging from July 2005 to June 2013 and includes 27 mutual fundschemes out of which 20 funds are open ended while 07 funds areclosed ended. Results prove underperformance on the part of all themutual funds and the whole industry was found weak on the part ofthe selection abilities of the fund managers and the portfolios werefound less diversified. However, it was noticed that closed ended fundsare better performers as compared to the open ended funds. Resultswere also inconsistent for the performance of individual funds asnone of the funds had the same rankings with respect to all the measuresused
IMPACT OF MACROECONOMIC INDICATORS ON DIFFERENT CAPITAL MARKETS IN PAKISTAN
This research is about determining the relationship of macroeconomic variables with different capital market indices of Pakistan. Therefore, for this purpose ARDL (Autoregressive Distributed Lagged Model) approach to co-integration has been applied to determine the long run relationship and Toda-Yamamoto causality test to determine the uni-directional relationship. It is found that the impact of different macro-economic variables is not exactly the same on different capital market indices. According to ARDL results, Money supply (M2) and GDP has positive significant, whereas discount rate has negative significant impact on KSE100 index. In case of Lahorestock exchange, none of the macroeconomic variable has significant impact on LSE25 index. According to the results of Toda-Yamamoto causality, only inflation has causal relationship with KSE100 and LSE25 index
Teaching English as a Language not Subject by Employing Formative Assessment
English is a second language (L2) in Sindh, Pakistan. Most of the public sector schools in Sindh teach English as a subject rather than a language. Besides, they do not distinguish between generic pedagogy and distinctive approaches used for teaching English as a first language (L1) and second language (L2). In addition, the erroneous traditional assessment focuses on only writing and reading skills and the listening and speaking skills of L2 remain excluded. There is a great emphasis on summative assessments, which contribute to a qualification; however, formative assessments, which provide timely and continuous appraisal and feedback, remain ignored. Summative assessment employs only paper-and- pencil based test, while the other current means of alternative assessments like self-assessment, peer-assessment, and portfolio assessment have not been incorporated, and explored yet. Teaching English as a subject not as a language, employing summative assessment not formative, depending on paper-and-pencil based test, and not using the alternative modes of assessment are some of the questions this study will deal with. The study under discussion suggests that current approaches employed for teaching English are misplaced as these take a subject teaching approach rather than a language teaching approach. It also argues for the paradigm shift from a product to process approach to assessment by administering modern alternative assessments
Review on Use of Wireless Sensor Network To Overcome Agricultural Problems of Pakistan
Wireless sensor networks are the communication of small sensing el- ements which collaborate with each other to collect process and communicate over wireless channel information about some physical phenomena. These self- managing, highly robust and energy efficient networks can be excellent means for monitoring underground mining, wildlife and various physical infrastruc- tures such as bridges, pipelines, and buildings. This paper introduces wireless sensor networks to address specific problems in agriculture system of agricul- tural countries like Pakistan and discusses WSN’s usefulness to overcome those problems
Extending the Stochastic Approach to Paasches Price Index Numbers
In recent times, the stochastic approach has received enormous attention to estimate the rate of inflation. The attraction of this approach is to provide not only the estimate of inflation rate, but also its standard error. In this paper, we extend the stochastic approach to derive the Paasches price index number and its standard error. We present an illustration to Laspeyres index number using consumer price data of Pakistan covering the period from July 2002 to June 201
Role of Contact Center for Smart Cities
Smart city is a strategic entity that comprises of modern urban production factors in a common framework and highlights the growing importance of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Telecommunications service providers have strengths and assets that can be utilized to bring the dream of a smart city environment into reality. This leads to a strong move that serves the needs of society by ensuring E-Governance rather than conventional setup of Governance. Establishing a customer contact centre is just the first part of the process of optimal digitalization of municipal operations and interactions with citizens. This research highlights how a contact center helps to achieve few goals of a by providing significant facilities to citizens
SELF-REGULATION AND CAREER DECISION MAKING AMONG UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
The present research conducted to study the relationshipbetween self-regulation and career decision making amongundergraduate students. The sample (N = 300) of study comprisedof undergraduate students ages ranging from 16 to 21 years (M =18.86, SD = 1.54) from government colleges (n = 152) and privatecolleges (n = 148). Short forms of Self-Regulation Questionnaire(Carey & Neal, 2005) and Career Decision Scale (Jones, 1989)were used to study the variables. Results reveal a positive relationshipbetween low self-regulation and career indecisiveness while anegative correlation between age and career decision making. Girlshave high self-regulation as compared to boys. There was no genderdifferences found on career decision making. Age and self-regulationpredict career decision making among the sample and as ageincreases career decision making becomes poor. Furtherimplications were also discussed
IMPACT OF FAMILY OWNERSHIP ON FINANCING DECISIONS: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF COMPANIES LISTED AT THE KSE
The current study attempts to investigate debt and dividendpolicies under the umbrella of capital structure’s theories in bothorganizational types i.e. family owned business (FOB) and non-familyowned business (NFOB). Two threshold points of ownership structure(25% & 50%) were used to distinguishing FOB from NFOB. A sampleof 280 listed firms at the KSE was collected for the period 2002-13.Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) was applied on paneldata to estimate the coefficients of variables. The empirical resultsindicated the weak application of pecking order theory and higherpayout ratio in family firms comparatively. The study providedexplanation regarding speedier rebalancing the target capitalstructure of family firms due to easier access to debt and long termpresence of the family in the firm. However, FOBs smooth dividends tolesser extent than their counterpart NFOBs indicate lower agencyand information asymmetry problems in them. SECP as well as stockexchanges are advised to bring required changes in corporate lawsto ensure lucid and verifiable disclosure regarding dividend policyin their reports, prospectus and websites et
