Learning from Experience in Context of Climate Prediction in Pakistan using Data Mining Techniques Avidence from Computer Research n Pakistan
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the climate changes in Pakistan, identify issues related to weather disasters and to revisit weather prediction approaches. The proposed approach is based on different algorithms and their comparisons with reference to past 5years (2010 - 2015) data on 12 attributes. A flow diagram is given that identifies steps included in the process. Results are obtained using WEKA 3.7.13 (latest version 2015). The KNN algorithm and memory-based reasoning algorithm shows the accuracy of predicting weather forecasts. The BPANN algorithm is used to analyze the data set along with KNN and memory-based reasoning algorithms. Decision tree shows the accuracy of predicting weather forecasts. The KNN is used with Bayesian approach in this research. Attributes used in this research shows significant relationship while many of those work as independent variables. Since, for weather prediction these attributes are very important, we used variant factors based on time and date. The KNN algorithm using Bayesian classifier provides accurate results compare with memory-based reasoning of Decision Tree and BPANN trainlm and trainbr
Teacher Professional Education and Development: A Case Study
The case study research sought to explore whether school managers and teachers possessed knowledge of models of staff development and which models were in use in the private high school chosen for the study. Interviews of the Headmistress and teachers were conducted using semi-structured interview guides and then thematically coded. The f indings revealed that the research participants possessed no knowledge of the development models. If fact, the training model and the individually guided staff development model were used minimally without any conscious knowledge. The study highlighted the need for staff development if the quality of education was to improve
FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT (FDI) AND ITS IMPACT ON THE PRODUCTIVITY OF DOMESTIC FIRMS IN PAKISTAN
The aim of this study is to find the impact of FDI on productivityof local firms in Pakistan. Seven different sectors i.e. mining, manufacturing, utilities, construction, whole sale and retail, communication and finance sectors with 193 firms (including foreign and domestic firms) for the period 2002 to 2011 are considered. Fixed effect method of panel data regression is used to analyze the data. The results reveal that FDI and other control variables capital intensity, economies of scale, firm’s size and firm’s age have a positive and significant impact on labor productivity in Pakistan. FDI brings technology, new knowledge, highly skilled management and investments to local firms which confer a competitive advantage and economies of scale thus increasing their productivity. Pakistan has tremendous opportunity for foreign direct investment and the government must provide friendly and safe environment to foreign investors so that they gain confidence to investment here
WILLINGNESS TO PAY FOR PRIVATE SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT: INSIGHTS FROM PESHAWAR
Solid waste generation has become an importantenvironmental problem, particularly in developing nations. Solidwaste management (SWM) in Peshawar city has always been examinedfrom supply side, while the demand side i.e. willingness to pay (WTP)by residents has been ignored. This paper aims to estimate thehouseholds’ willingness to pay for private SWM in Peshawar district.A multistage sampling technique was applied for a sample size of 400households from 5 different locations of Peshawar. Logistic regressionestimation reveals that 75 percent of the respondents are willing topay, while multiple regressions reveal a mean WTP of PKR 163 permonth and a median WTP of PKR 100 over and above their existingpayments. However, this broadly depends on the income level andseverity of SWM in those areas. The findings of the study will helppolicy makers in designing a sustainable SWM strategy in Peshawardistrict
WORK FAMILY CONFLICT / FAMILY WORK CONFLICT - A STUDY OF GENDER AND FAMILY SYSTEMS
This study explores the difference in Work-Family conflictand Family Work Conflict as experienced by the genders and differentfamily systems. This is a dilemma of today when dual-earner familiesare becoming the need of the hour. The phenomenon often translatesinto a difficult effort to combine work and family and maintain abalance between these two domains. The study worked with twohypotheses. Hypothesis 1: there will be significant difference in WorkFamily Conflict or Family Work Conflict on gender base. Hypothesis2: that the Work Family Conflict or Family Work Conflict isexperienced strongly in joint families as compared to nuclear families. The sample consisted of 215 respondents enrolled in the MBA program.Netemeyer, Boles, and McMurrian’s, (1996) questionnaire thatmeasures this conflict was used. A demographic form asking about thegender and family system was also included. The data collected wasanalyzed using T-Test. Results obtained negated both the hypotheses.Culture emerged as the main determinant factor for correlating thetwo domains of adult life i.e. Work and Famil
Stylistic Analysis of Ahmed Ali’s Short Story Our Lane
The undertaken study is based on stylistic analysis of Ahmed Ali’s short story Our Lane. The study analyzes how the author has used linguistic features like noun, adjective, conjunction, sentence complexity to portray the social, political, economic, religious, psychological and cultural conditions of the colonized natives of the Indian subcontinent in the wake of the British colonial rule. The story portrays how the colonial rule has deteriorated the people socially, economically, politically and psychologically. Ahmed Ali’s use of adjective is in consonant with the established norm of using 7 to 8% of the total text (Hofland & Johansson, 1987:6). Whereas, the median of 343 sentences is 13, which is shorter than the length of an average modern sentence, which according to Ellegard is 17.8 words. While rebutting colonial narrative, he deviates from the standards of English language: excessive use of coordinating conjunction ‘and’ is evidence to it. Most adjectives of positive characteristics qualify to the past, whereas the adjectives referring to present are either of negative or of neutral characteristics, and thus the writer recognizes the glory of the past and condemns the disintegrating present and uncertain future in the colonized land
Awareness and Practices of Oral Hygiene among Female Undergraduates in a Malaysian University
The aim of this study is to evaluate the extent of awareness and practices of oral hygiene among undergraduate female students in a residential college of a university at Malaysia and to assess the need for awareness programs about oral hygiene. The study was carried out using a self-administered questionnaire. Hundred undergraduate female Malay students were selected as sample through convenience sampling. The results indicated that a majority of the respondents used toothpaste and toothbrush as primary tools for cleaning their teeth twice a day and was found that they had never used Miswak (a wooden teeth-cleaning stick made from tree twigs). They had adequate knowledge about periodontal and gingival health and were aware of the importance of visiting dentist regularly; however, most of them visited dentists when having a toothache. They had also reported need for organizing oral hygiene awareness programs by college administration and showed adequate oral hygiene knowledge and practices. Nevertheless, few inadequate practices were also identified which were being considered under oral hygiene along with lack of awareness programs being organized in college for which recommendations are suggested
Attitude of Business Students towards E-Commerce: A Case Study
This case study assesses the attitude of business students towards e-commerce subject offered in business schools comparing it with different other business subjects such as marketing, human resource, f inance, and supply chain etc. It discusses the emerging trends of e-commerce globally and its impact on Pakistan exploring the trends of e-commerce in Pakistan as well as the role of business schools in capitalising the industry of e-commerce by introducing e-commerce as a subject in their curriculum. The present case study identif ied the inclination of business students towards business studies and their ignorance of the emerging f ield of e-commerce as a subject study. It utilised survey questionnaire technique to gather data from 100 MBA students from f ive different business schools having basic knowledge about e-commerce. The f indings of the study, tabulated through the graphical presentation, highlighted the unawareness of the business students regarding the benefits of the emerging industry of e-commerce

Managing English Teaching Outcomes in Universities: An Experiential Learning Case Study of ESL/EFL Interventions
In countries where English is a foreign language, universities are expected to enhance the communication skills of their students after overcoming the deficiencies that they typically carry over from their schooling years, and the challenge for universities is to achieve this through the few mandated courses. This paper describes an auto-enthnographic case study of a series of interventions for improving the English teaching outcomes over a decade by the dean of a private university of Karachi. Each intervention was ref ined over a number of semesters through several execution cycles consisting of design, implementation and evaluation. Interventions were tried and tested until the outcomes could no longer be improved with the given resources. Issues identif ied through the evaluation of a particular intervention led to the design of subsequent interventions. The interventions consisted of changes made to the number of courses, grading criteria, selection of learning methodology, assessment strategy, hiring qualif ications, teacher development, medium of instruction for technical courses, design of environmental culture, quality control across multiple sections, level of student engagement, intensity of instruction doze, lab and instruction credit hours, assistance from senior students, and out of the box designs of course interactions. Experiential learning and analysis of these interventions demonstrated that traditional classroom based interventions centered on a teacher do not work unless they are accompanied by immersion experiences in innovative, collaborative and flexible learning environments. Experiential Learning and Project Based Learning (PBL) techniques which can stimulate and inspire the students were found to be more effective. The study proposes an innovative structure for conducting English courses that would provide an immersion experience to students which would be concentrated in time and space to help overcome many of the identified issues
