Progress in Building the Relationship between PFI Prisons and Local Residents : A Comparative Study of 2013 and 2021 Resident Surveys at the Shimane Asahi Rehabilitation Program Center
Get PDFThis study focuses on the “Shimane Asahi Rehabilitation Program Center,” the Privately Financed Initiative （PFI） prison. We have re-analyzed the data of the survey of residents living in the neighboring community surrounding the facility conducted in 2013 and 2021 （Yano et al., 2014; Kamise, in the process of publishing） to examine the progress of collaborative and corrective efforts of partnership between the PFI prisons and the local community. We found out that over time, the levelof residents feeling unsafe and insecure was reduced, an increase in the understanding of the social significance of the PFI prison, and a growing tendency to consider the facility indispensable to the community. There was a small change in receptive attitudes towards formerly incarcerated individuals. This necessitates the further need to explore the strategies that are effective to change the public attitudes against the formerly incarcerated individuals which necessitate the partnership ofthe correctional facilities and the local community.departmental bulletin pape
