    Get PDF
The first report of soy being administered to an infant is over 100 years old (1).  Since the 1960s the composition of soy formula has been better adapted to the nutritional needs of infants and since 2000 infant formula based on soy fulfills European Directives and legislation for infant feeding.Soy infant formula contains a soy protein isolate (95% protein), and methionine, carnitine, taurine, iron, calcium phosphor and zinc are added. Heating destroys the anti-protease activity of soy for over 90 %. In 2016, soy infant formula was still 12% of the USA market and 25 % of infants were fed soy infant formula during their first years of life (2)

Objective: Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is the predominant structural fatty acid in the brain and crucial for cognitive development in early life. Newborn DHA intake completely depends on preformed DHA in mother’s breast milk. In advancing years, globalization has been declining the fish intake of Asian countries. This study aims to determine DHA intake among lactating mothers in Jakarta and its association with breast milk’s DHA.Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Grogol Petamburan and Cilincing Public Health Centers, Jakarta. Eighty healthy lactating mothers aged 20–35 years old in 1–6 months postpartum were taken using consecutive sampling method. Characteristics data were taken by interviews and DHA intake was assessed with the semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. Breast milk specimens were collected in the morning and its DHA content was analyzed using Gas Chromatography with Mass Spectrometry. Descriptive analyses and Spearman rho test were used with a 95% confidence level.Result: This study showed the median of subjects’ DHA intake was 158.5(13.9–719.7) mg/day, i.e., 67.5% of the subjects was below Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recommendation. The median of breast milk DHA was 51.7(19–184.7) mg/day, only 42.5 % of the subjects had breast milk DHA to meet the minimal requirement of their infant. A moderate positive correlation was found between maternal DHA intake with breast milk DHA (r = 0.478, p < 0.001). Conclusion:  Maternal DHA intake has moderate positive correlation with breast milk DHA, more than half of the subject had DHA intake below FAO recommendation

Food technology to process plant-based food (soy protein isolate formula)

    Get PDF
Soy protein isolate (SPI) is obtained by extracting the soluble protein and removing non-protein material such as fat and carbohydrates. Because of this process, it has a neutral flavor and cause less flatulence than soy flours. Furthermore, SPI has higher Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS) compared to soymilk, which is 100% and 92.6% respectively

    Get PDF
As Japan has been facing an increasingly aged society ahead of the rest of the world, much interest has been focused on interventions for treating frailty and sarcopenia to extend healthy life expectancy in recent years. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a crisis in healthcare systems all over the world. It has had a huge impact on not only public health but also the global economy. Due to the lack of effective vaccination and pharmacological antiviral intervention, pandemic control is dependent on public health measures. These measures have basically aimed to decrease social activities and face-to-face communication, including the restriction of public gatherings and compulsory stay-at-home policies [1]. Even though these strategies are effective in controlling the pandemic, social and economic influences have obviously affected vulnerable groups of people, including elderly individuals. Therefore, it is important to enhance the effectiveness of pandemic control measures while minimizing secondary negative consequences. This article aimed to describe the importance of maintaining good nutritional and mental health for elderly individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a particular focus on frailty management
