Identität[s]_Kritik beanspruchen – no risk no pun
Claiming Identity Critique – No Risk No PunStarting from the question how – beyond neoliberal imperatives of optimization and inflationary how-to books – precariousness could possibly be made productive, the article offers argumentative grounds for a critique of hegemonic constructions of reality as a redefinition of the parameters of intelligibility. The text focuses on the moments of tension between a claim to and a critique of identity; moments of tension which, as a considerable challenge, represent a pivotal starting point, not least for feminist-antiracist-queer representational critique to formulate critical subject positions. Based on linking a revised notion of mediality with that of the political, and analyzing the political-representational practices of current protest movements, the article develops theoretical arguments for making productive as an epistemic-political potential the moments of tension represented by the paradoxical formulation of an anti-identitarian position while at the same time maintaining this tension as an open and necessarily antagonistic space for negotiations
Common Ground. HOTEL GELEM partizipatives Kunstprojekt – kollektive Prozesse und eigene Praxen im Prekären
Common Ground. The participatory Art project HOTEL GELEM – collective processes and own practices in precarious living conditions Due to the culture capitalistic principle, artistic, creative work no longer brings a position of personal independence or a development of critical faculties. Creative capabilities are nowadays a general skill that matters for all different kinds of occupations. At the same time, the success of every creative undertaking is reduced to its commercial success. Art could do more. The project HOTEL GELEM leads us to a fundamental understanding how the given preconditions and the social expectations shape our specific opportunities for participation and expression. Many Roma families suffer from expulsion and exclusion, and try to survive in the outmost precarious living conditions on the fringes of our society. Together with these families, HOTEL GELEM attempts to break the dreadful vicious circle of stigmatization and poverty. The potential of the artistic practice lays in the possibility of overcoming predetermined views
Anti-Gone
Anti-GoneFrom a psychoanalytic perspective, the article explores the relation between precariousness and mourning – or rather, the inability to mourn, which Sigmund Freud described as melancholia. Referring to Judith Butler and Melanie Klein, it focuses on the question of how the unlamentable loss – the lost paradise – is re-performed in science fiction narratives. Our relationship with what is lost, the text argues, is based on half-knowledge, which projects the interminable past psychotically into the future, thus trying to remain connected to what is gone
Inszenierungen des Prekären. Verletzbarkeit und Geschlechtsidentität in Alain Platels Gardenia
Stagings of Precarity. Vulnerability and Gender Identity in Alain Platel’s Gardenia Departing from Judith Butler’s notion of the precarious as the general vulnerability of the human subject, the text questions the possibilities of contemporary performing arts to stage the precariousness of the other and thus insist on the singularity of each one of us. The dance performance Gardenia by Alain Platel and the Ballet C de la B from 2008 is analyzed as an example of the staging of vulnerability and otherness. The performers of Gardenia are a group of elderly transsexuals and transvestites, thus representing the precarious life relating both to their age (especially as dancers) and their gender identity.
Transnationale Projektionen des Prekären
Katharina PewnyTransnational Projections of the PrecariousPrecarious living and working conditions in the neoliberal society are also a topical issue in the performing arts. Against the background of current developments in European theatre, this contribution discusses the work of René Pollesch and of Japanese writer and directorToshiki Okada. Both perform precarity in the sense of economic uncertainty, and both stage as precarious characters connotated in particular as female.
Was ist das Andere des Prekären? Überlegungen zur Darstellung prekärer Arbeit heute
Judith SiegmundWhat is the Other of Precarity? Considerations on the Representation of Precarious Work TodayThis paper inquires into the imagined Other of precarity from the perspective of cultural philosophy. Which norms are implicitly applied when the contemporary subject is termed “precarious” or when there is mention of “precarious subjectivity.” Exploring social science and social psychology theories as regards the premises on which their respective critiques of precarity are based, this contribution shows how a traditional negative dialectics of economic security and freedom is virulent notwithstanding intentions to the contrary. The central claim of this paper, however, is that a positive dialectics needs to be developed in response to these conditions.
