    Affekt(de)regulierung durch Affizierung

Affect(de)regulation by AffectionThis article starts from the assumption that the critique of representation is fundamental for a critical conceptualization of affect. In this regard, theories discussed in the tradition of Spinoza are crucial; they connect affect with a reflexive moment and at the same time determine it as a fundamental affection preceding the subject. As a result of this perspectivism,  affect can be associated on the one hand with artistic practices, on the other hand it can be characterized as a co-evolutionary process of individuation between technique, organism, and the world. By trying to connect a critique of representation and affect theory, this contribution takes into account the current interest in affect – not in order to follow the myth of immediacy, but to render conceivable a critical attitude that includes the interrelation of reflexive-cognitive and affective-physical moments

Affect and Representation – Gaze and SensationStarting with the Fly, Yoko Ono’s video from the early 1970s, this article compares a feminist reading of the 1970s/80s with a performative, new materialist reading as developed since the 1990s. Whereas feminist art and media theories center on psychoanalytical concepts such as the gaze and the disavowal of the female/maternal body, new feminist materialism takes the body – the one represented in the image and in the viewer’s body – as concrete, material co-processors provoking and stimulating a desire in motion. Whereas the 1970s understood the image as a chain of signification (and real women not fitting the concept of the WOMAN), the new reading goes beyond any semantic-linguistic interpretation. Today, a “philosophy of feeling” (Susanne Langer) focussing on movement, materiality, touch and sensation, meets the old anxieties of the 1970s where woman, body, feelings came along with nature – and nature was the pure opposite of the male logos ruling the world, producing knowledge, and governing policy

Stein und Diagramm: Fragen der Materialität in VALIE EXPORTs Körperkonfigurationen / Stone and Diagram: Questions of Materiality in VALIE EXPORT’s Body Configurations

Through analysis of VALIE EXPORT’s series Body Configurations and its use in the film Invisible Adversaries, this article historicizes the body as material from the standpoints of mediatization, photographic reproduction, and retrospective artistic modification. The structural analyses of power in the writings of Althusser, Foucault, and Deleuze, as well as feminist theories of the 1970s and 1980s, are illuminated through EXPORT’s practice, essentially in a contemporary context of expanded performance art

Hanna(h) Höchs Ästhetik der Stickerei / Hanna(h) Höch’s Aesthetics of Embroidery

Parallel to Hanna(h) Höch’s activities with Dada Berlin, the autonomous, early feminist artist designed small-scale needlework templates for illustrated magazines from 1916-1926. Through her education in graphic and textile design, Höch could not only finance her independent living as emancipated woman, she also established a unique position within the male-dominated Berlin Dada „club“. Her background in textile techniques, particularly embroidery, enabled her to employ the newly invented technique of photomontage in an innovative way. At the same time, her avant-garde work reflected back onto her engagement with textiles. Apart from textile templates, Höch published a short story and statements (Die freie Stick-Kunst [The Free Art of Embroidery], Vom Sticken [About Embroidery] etc.). They took on the programmatic character of manifestos, and integrated ambitious needlework done at the end of the First World War within the avant-garde and its abstract formal canon

Current developments in cultural studies and queer feminist theory point towards a ‚material turn‘, which calls for addressing the material bases of media etc. as significant and potentially agential in political and cultural dynamics. This turn aims towards a deconstruction of modern binaries (mind vs. body, culture vs. matter, meaning vs. affect), which also shape hegemonic conceptions of sex, gender and desire. This paper explores the critical potential of this turn for a feminist engagement with American exploitation cinema of the later 1960s. I focus on excessive sound textures: on noise, distortion, dirt and wear in the audio track of Herschell Gordon Lewis’ She-Devils on Wheels. By tracing the affective-meaningful resonances sonic dirt may activate, I ask how material criticism provides productive perspectives in dealing with two central, yet problematic categories in feminist cultural criticism: agency and the sovereign subject
