Mutter_schafft – von un/sichtbarer Hausarbeit im Schöner Wohnen Magazin der 1970er-Jahre

Housework and its representations are made in/visible within the visual structure of the living magazine Schöner Wohnen. A binary gender_gap is established and reproduced between the pages and their assemblage of images and texts. This essay examines the gendered bodies of housework that appear in the Schöner Wohnen magazine, as well as in feminist art of the 1970s, and questions their embedding in discourses of gender and dwelling. The visual structures that make manual labour in/visible within the technical interior of the housework are analysed, based on two objects: The Candy, a washing machine advertisement that appears in the Schöner Wohnen, and Die Geburtenmadonna (1976), a work of the artist Valie Export that unveils visual patterns of patriarchal narratives

Körperkunst bewegter Bilder. Die feministische Ästhetik der heterogenen Medienpraxis bei Maria Lassnig und Carolee Schneemann

Maria Lassnig’s and Carolee Schneemann’s films show how they expanded their artistic practices from painting to experimental and animation film. Part of the feminist art movement of the 1970s and the filmmakers group Women/Artist/Filmmakers, Inc. their work supports the feminist approach towards an emancipation of the body and the recognition of women artists. The relation between the formal depiction of women’s bodies and their reflection in the transformation and animation in film depicts a formal approach towards a feminist aesthetic. The comparison with independent animation films and the experimental films of Carolee Schneemann as part of the Women/Artist/Filmmakers, Inc., sets Maria Lassnig’s work in the context of her time. Maria Lassnig’s and Carolee Schneemann’s wide spectrum from painting to film broadens the comprehension of body art that happened across all media and went beyond the performance and new media art

Living magazines are a medium that has developed into an independent genre since the 19th century and assumed a key role in the creation of living and perceptions on living. They are ideals narrating which sides of living are good, correct and beautiful for a permanently improvable and finally happy life. In their educational intent they present themselves in an individualising fashion that is entertaining, integrative and animating and therefore aims for an imaginative and real reaction of their readership. The magazine is a specific display, a sorted and serialised collection of images and texts, image and text types. Living magazines are no media arrangement aligned to linear reception - the combination of columns, reports, photo galleries, advertisements etc. allows non-linear reading. Power and dominance are inherent to the interdependence of the discourse-hegemonial space of living magazines with self-technical processes of the modern subject, though the need for action and agency is always included

Wohnen in der Gartenschönheit – Narrative vom Wohnen in/mit der Natur im 20. Jahrhundert

    Get PDF
In the early 20th century, the private garden as a garden of residence is set down in the German term Wohngarten – an opening of the privilege to inhabit gardens to the wider public. The journal Gartenschönheit, published by some of the most famous garden authors of the time, appropriately calls upon lay people as well as professionals, discussing a range of garden(ing) topics. There is a strong focus on actual work with plants and in the garden, but questions of residence are implicated in many contributions, including the use and layout of gardens as spaces of threshold between the private and the public as well as nature and culture, thereby negotiating aspects of health (hygiene) and ethics. The cultural subject is examined in the dichotomous situation of cultivating nature and being educated by nature in the garden – thereby developing narratives of healthy living in the outdoors. The essay at hand discusses these topics by means of several examples: The development of front page illustrations throughout the first publishing period of the journal (1920 to 1941), the way that work in the garden is omitted whilst being implicated and an analysis of the text-image-arrangements of an exemplary article, showing how the explicit discourse of living in harmony with nature always includes implicit moments of dominating nature.
