Roof typology of wooden-constructed buildings on the reliefs of Borobudur Temple : Tipologi atap bangunan berkonstruksi kayu pada relief Candi Borobudur
The function of stone tools from Gua Arca Site, Kangean Island, East Java: Fungsi alat batu dari Situs Gua Arca, Pulau Kangean, Jawa Timur
Gua Arca is a prehistoric cave site in Kangean Island, East Java. Stone tools found in this site has yet to be studied in terms of the function, merely being collected instead. This article discusses the possible function of the stone tools based on typological and microscopical use-wear analysis, compared to the results from previous experimental research. The results of the analysis show that use-wear is related to the tools’ function and the material they worked on. The similarity between use-wear traces on stone tools from Gua Arca and the result from previous experimental research indicates the stone tools’ function as wood-working tools and food-processing tools
SERPENT SCULPTURE ON TELAGA BATU INSCRIPTION: AN INTERPRETATION BASED ON PEIRCE'S SEMIOTIC APPROACH: FIGUR ULAR PADA PRASASTI TELAGA BATU: UPAYA PEMAKNAAN BERDASARKAN PENDEKATAN SEMIOTIKA PEIRCE
Abstract
Sriwijaya is a kingdom that developed between the 7th and 11th centuries AD. The inscriptions become archaeological remains as well as written sources that can reconstruct Sriwijaya's cultural history. The Telaga Batu inscription as one of Sriwijaya inscriptions is different from other inscriptions because it has the only ornament in living creature shape and it is the longest inscription among the others. The ornaments found on the Telaga Batu Inscription are in the form of a seven-headed snake. This study attempts to answer the meaning of the seven-headed snake figure with Peirce's triadic semiotic method. In answering these questions, a series of stages of archaeological research are used, including data collection, data analysis and interpretation. The snake figure in the Telaga Batu inscription can eventually be interpreted as a manifestation of the Datu's protector and the form of the Datu as a Buddha.

TRACKING THE LOCATIONS OF HINDU - BUDDHIST ARCHAEOLOGICAL REMAINS IN MAGELANG REGION BASED ON ROD 1914 AND GIS APPROACH: PELACAKAN LOKASI TINGGALAN HINDU - BUDDHA BERDASARKAN ROD 1914 DAN PENDEKATAN SIG DI WILAYAH MAGELANG
Abstract
Java was once the center of Hindu and Buddhist culture around the 4th until the 15th century AD. The number of archaeological remains from this period is infinite, both monumental remains such as temples and petirtaan (water shrines/ temple), and other remains such as yoni, linga, and statues. These remains are registered systematically by the Dutch East Indies government through its Archaeological Service (Oudheidkundig Dienst). unfortunately, most of them cannot be identified for their exact present locations. Some of the remains were later discovered unexpectedly at the time of construction or agricultural work activities. Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the locations of archaeological remains as reported by the Dutch Archaeological Service in the region of Magelang using the Geographic Information System (GIS) approach. This study suggests that, during the period of the Dutch East Indies, Magelang region has a very high density of Hindu-Buddhist archaeological remains. The result of this study can be used for further surveys, re-inventory, as well as protection and preservation efforts.
