The era of reformation in Indonesia was supposedly articulated with the pluralism of the society. Sadly, many cases regarding religious and ethnic conflicts pronounced the opposite, whereas pluralism and religious tolerance were two of the main characters of the nation since the days of the ancestors. The legacy of those two characters is actually able to be observed through cultural heritage, as a messenger from the past. This study examines one aspect of the practice of religious tolerance, which recorded in the ancient inscriptions from 8th to 11th AD., which selected through purposive sampling procedure. The aforementioned aspect was regarding the important role of ancient vihÄra as a symbol of religious tolerance in society. Such role was the impact of its functions, which are different with today’s modern function. This information on the function and role of the vihÄra in ancient Java is provided to support modern Indonesian society to understand their material cultural heritage

Economic calculations as cost-benefit ratios are used by prehistoric people in exploiting their natural resources. This paper will discuss about landscape and natural resources to reconstruct the site catchment area which explored by Neolithic people at South Banyuwangi in prehistoric times. In the Site Catchment Analysis for traditional farmer, a preliminary of 1-km radius site catchment zone is the most basic or regular subsistence resources, and 5-km radii is largely the maximum limits of radius distance. Based on hypotheses of catchment zone, we analyzed its natural resource inside each catchment zone. This analysis conducted on landscape conditions (hills, plains, steep cliffs), water sources (springs, rivers and water basins). Comparison between environmental conditions inside the catchment zone and artifact findings (from survey and excavation work) is obtained to predict the site catchment pattern of Neolithic settlement sites at South Banyuwangi

The environment affects someone’s life, since the environment in the womb to the environment in which he was born and lives first. A-biotic, biotic and socio-cultural environment always have a role in modifying their physic and culture. Role in the care and nurture the baby in the form of the socialization, internalization, and growth-development bring health consequences in the following period. This research aimed to identify a pathological skull from the first half of the 20th century, and discuss the results in a historical bioanthropology and bioarchaeological perspective. The researchers observed and examined the pathological evidences, and determined the diagnosis. Furthermore, the researchers discussed the results with reference to the historical and socio-cultural data associated with the atmosphere and events in the life of the individual. The history of the Indonesian Archipelago has demonstrated the glorious ages of large maritime kingdoms which governed this vast area, e.g Sriwijaya, Mataram Hindu, Singasari and Majapahit. During that age the maritime transportation must have been well developed and varieties of watercrafts might have been created to support interisland communication. Unfortunately, the hard evidence for this maritime technology are hardly recovered, so that our knowledge on watercraft construction technigue used at that time is very limited. In order to bridge that gap, ethnographic data may provide invaluable information to reconstruct the ancient maritime technology. One of the important information to reconstruct ancient watercraft building technigue are terms and names used for referring parts and components of the watercraft. Such information is still available among the traditional boat builder community in the village of Campurejo, near Gresik, East Java. Situated in the north coast of Java, Gresik had played a great role in the ancient maritime trade linking the eastem and western parts of the archipelago. Presumably, the traditional boat building technigue used here, as reflected in terminology for boat components, still represents the ancient Javanese boat technology. This paper describes the terms and construction method to build the unigue “pincuk†boat in Gresik area. These data will hopefully provide useful information to reconstruct ancient knowlegde on some aspects of maritime technology of Ancient Jav

The Honor of our Nation is often tested by our neighbouring countries with some provocative actions. Since the ancient period of Majapahit Kingdom which was also well-known as a maritime kingdom, Gajah Mada had succeeded in uniting the Nusantara (the Nation) through his strong military navy. It’s neither a myth nor a slogan because it has been proven archaeologically by the ships reliefs sculptured on the wall of the Borobudur Temple dated back to 200 years ago. Other evidence is on the inscriptions of Kediri and Majapahit which mentioned about ships, fishermen, captain and the process of building a ship. The spirit as well as the intelligence of our ancestors must be appreciated and honored as a real breath and spirit of our own, presenting an identity and dignity of one Nation. This pride will be the most precious base maintain the unition of Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia

Research documents in the form of audio-visual as a form of research documentation have not received much serious attention until now. Even though these sources are very potential materials for publishing archaeology to the wider community. This paper will specifically discuss audio-visual documents and their output in the form of digital video documentaries of archaeology. At the Balai Arkeologi Yogyakarta, this form of publication is a product whose output is routinely attempted at the end of each research as well as at other important events relating to archaeological resources. &nbsp
