Long Average Unemployment Duration Implies Better Job Market
Long-term unemployment was one of the biggest problems during the Great Recession. Nearly half of all unemployed persons were out of work for six months or more. Since then, the average duration of unemployment has gradually diminished along with the unemployment rate, but it has nevertheless remained relatively long. In fact, the average duration is still longer than every prior post-WWII recession. Along average duration of unemployment has traditionally indicated structural impediments in the labor market, such as skills mismatches. Therefore, the current long average duration is naturally seen as a sign of continued weakness. In contrast, this paper posits that the elevated duration of unemployment actually indicates an unusually well-functioning labor market. The long duration of unemployment is the result of very short job searches for newly unemployed workers and is unrelated to long-term unemployment. Consequently, policies designed to solve this problem may b unnecessary and misguided
Predictive Sports Analytics Using an Exponential Power Function
This paper introduces a predictive sports analytics model that can be used to i) rank teams, ii) estimate win probability, and iii) calculate the expected winning margin (spread) of a game. The model is based on an exponential distribution function and is solved using a log-loss function and maximum likelihood estimates (MLE). The most appealing aspect of this quantitative approach is that the model is objective, transparent, and testable. Readers can verify all calculations and results as the model does not employ any black box method. We apply this model to the 2018-2019 NFL season to rank teams, estimate scores, and make predictions across all pairs of teams. The model predicted more than 70% of the NFL games correct, and has 2 = 26% when comparing estimated spreads to actual spreads. This model can also serve as an objective approach to assist committees determine which teams should be selected for college post season tournaments such as the NCAA basketball tournament and the College Football Playoffs

In 2013 I had the distinct pleasure to be offered the opportunity to become a part of the Molloy College family. President Dr. Drew Bogner believed that CERCOM would be an important part of building an exciting program for students in Earth and Environmental Science at Molloy. Dr. Bogner was able to envision how the CERCOM Field Station, would enrich Molloy College science students, given its decades of earth, environmental, and marine sciences research. He had the foresight to understand that the experiences at CERCOM would help foster a vast array of international academic collaborations which now include 14 countries. CERCOM has since arranged for a wide variety of internships for Molloy College students through 28 collaborative groups, (Federal, State, local, and non-government organizations) that offer science experiences. CERCOM has served over 80 students who have graduated and who have all gone on to employment or graduate studies in earth and environmental science. Students have participated in the production of 8 peer-reviewed scientific publications and assisted in conducting over 48 conference’s, workshops, symposiums, colloquiums and lecture series. Due to the extensive Earth & Environmental Science collaborations for field study experiences at CERCOM, Molloy College has been successful in obtaining a major grant of $2.4 million from the NSF for Scholarships; the ASPIRE and NOYCE Ambassador Awards. Dr. Bogner gave the inspirational Opening Key Note remarks at the International Conference on Horseshoe Crab Conservation and Biology, held in Sasebo, Japan in 2015. All this and more would not have happened without Dr. Bogner’s insight and support of CERCOM in the conservation of these seminal organisms on a global scale, and through the enhancement of the Earth & Environmental Sciences BS degree program at Molloy College. Exploring the Use of Marimba in Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy with Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
This study explored the use of the marimba in Nordoff Robbins music therapy with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Three clients each received two individual 30 to 45-minute music therapy sessions over the course of three weeks. After reviewing the sessions an inductive thematic analysis was competed in order to determine themes that occurred throughout the study. Five themes were discussed using clinical examples and musical transcriptions. These themes included: (a) sharing the marimba to strengthen the therapeutic relationship, (b) the use of marimba as an accompanying instrument, (c) rhythmic structuring, (d) the use of Nordoff Robbins repertoire on marimba, and (e) the use of mallet techniques to reflect emotional qualities of the music. The use of mallet techniques in addition to the timbre and range of the instrument allowed for the marimba to be used clinically to engage clients in musical interactions. The examples included in the study indicated that the musical qualities of the marimba can be used to engage clients with ASD. Using Improvisational Music Therapy to Explore the Therapeutic Relationship in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Case Study
The importance of developing a therapeutic relationship has been emphasized in the field of music therapy. In order to examine the process of building between a music therapist and a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder during an improvisational music therapy session, this study utilized the microanalysis method to explore both musical and non-musical responses of the therapist and the child in a five-minute excerpt of a music therapy session at the Rebecca Center for Music Therapy. The results indicated that specific qualities of improvisational music, such as repetition and changes provide opportunities for the therapist and the client to connect and build therapeutic relationship
