    A Thesis Submitted In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE in Chemistry Department of Environmental Science from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.Renewable energy, such as solar and wind, helps move away from the reliance on fossil fuels, which causes the significant issue of atmospheric carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions. One of the biggest challenges of renewable energy is the lack of storage options so it can be readily available when it is inaccessible (i.e., when environmental conditions change, and solar and wind energy are not accessible). Of the potential energy storage options, electrochemical storage, specifically battery storage, has become popular because of the potential for long-term storage they provide. Some examples of battery storage include lithium-ion and redox flow. While redox flow batteries (RFBs) are an attractive option for long-term energy storage, a lack of suitable high-potential catholyte species hinders the development. Hydrolysis of the charged (oxidized) form typically occurs when the catholyte’s redox potential approaches that of water, leading to performance degradation. Here we show that hydrolysis of an oxidized (charged) organometallic catholyte, which normally leads to severe voltage losses, can be curtailed through interactions with oxidized carbon surfaces. We discovered that the addition of activated carbon cloth (ACC) to the reservoir of low-cost, high-potential iron (II/III) tris-2,2’-bipyridine ([Fe(bpy)3]2+/3+) catholyte-limited aqueous redox flow batteries extends their lifetime and boosts discharge voltage. A similar effect is observed when the cathode is electrochemically oxidized (overcharged) on the first cycle and by modifying electrolyte pH. Oxidized carbons appear to modify the structure of the charged catholyte’s hydrolysis product, the dimer µ-O-[FeIII(bpy)2(H2O)]24+, and/or change the solution pH, permitting its reduction at a more favorable redox potential than in the ACC-free catholyte. Near-neutral-pH RFBs employing 1,1?-bis(3-sulfonatopropyl)-4,4?- bipyridinium ((SPr)2V) anolyte in excess and the with the [Fe(bpy)3]2+/3+ catholyte containing ACC exhibited high-voltage discharge for 600 cycles (41 days) with no discernable capacity fade. We also demonstrate that a zero-pot, solvent-free synthetic method yields long-lived [Fe(bpy)3]2+/3+-based RFBs when employing the novel voltage-boosting methods.ChemistryCollege of Scienc

    A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Nursing Practice.Background: Chlamydia is the most reported bacterial sexually transmitted infection in the United States. The disease is mainly asymptomatic, and university aged individuals have rates of chlamydia infections higher than the general population. Despite recommendations for regular screenings in young adults, routine screenings were not performed at the university health center (UHC). Purpose: To determine if providing education to UHC staff and implementing a standardized chlamydia screening (SCSQ) process for students visiting the UHC increased chlamydia screening and testing rates across a university campus. Methods: A 45-minutes chlamydia educational in-service and pre- and post-assessments were provided to UHC staff. The SCSQ was administered to all students who presented to the UHC for provider visit. Results: There was statistically significant increase in staff chlamydia knowledge pretest to posttest t(9) = 5.35, 95% CI [ 3.29 – 8.12], p < .001, d = 1.69. There was a statistically significant difference in proportion of students screened in the pre-intervention group vs. intervention group X2 = 488, p < .001. There was also a statistically significant difference in testing from the pre-intervention group vs. intervention group X2 = 32.95, p < .001. However, there was not a statistically significant difference in those who tested positive in the pre-intervention group when compared to the intervention group X2 = .881, p = .386. Implications: The findings of this project are clinically significant as it reinforces the need to screen routinely for this asymptomatic disease particularly in the vulnerable populations to detect and treat the disease early.Nursing PracticeCollege of Nursing and Health Science

    Creating a “zero textbook cost” course to reduce the cost of education for students. Digital marketing is a fast-paced, dynamic field; most traditional books contain outdated information before they are even published. Using OER allows the instructor to quickly adjust learning resources to fit developments & advancements in the field.Before I developed the OER for this course, I researched various textbooks and interviewed several former students who had their own digital marketing agency and/or had recent work experience in digital marketing. From that research, I identified 14 topics to include in the course. This number works well with different term lengths: 1 topic per week for 15-week course (with a certification exam serving as the final exam in week 15); 2 topics per week in the 7-week term; 3 topics per week (2 in Week 1 to allow for setting up software/accounts needed for class) in 5-week summer term. I joined the HubSpot Education Partners Program to provide students with free access to an enterprise-level subscription to HubSpot’s CRM platform (used by over 150,000 businesses worldwide). This allowed me to supplement their publically-available lessons and certifications (HubSpot Academy) with access to the actual platform. I developed three “application exercises” that provide students with hands-on experience with a commercial CRM platform (designing a landing page, writing a blog post, composing & sending & evaluating a promotional email message). Content selected consists of videos, blogs, ebooks, toolkits, and interactive lessons/tools related to digital marketing. All included videos are ADA-compliant (include human-generated captions). HubSpot video lessons also include PowerPoint slides and a transcript; some even provide support for multiple languages (which may be helpful for international students). The following sections identify the title of the learning resource, URL (link), creator, type of content, date, length (if applicable) and a description that summarizes the content and explains why I selected it

    Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by impaired glucose utilization leading to chronic hyperglycemia. It is an endocrine disorder that presents severe clinical and public health problems worldwide, including in South Texas. Blood glucose levels are commonly used in the diagnosis of diabetes. Microvascular and macrovascular complications are common in patients with uncontrolled diabetes. However, HbA1c is a simple blood test that measures the average blood glucose levels over the past 2 to 3 months and is used to diagnose and effectively manage diabetes mellitus to prevent diabetic complications. In this study, we evaluated changes in red blood cell morphology with varying HbA1c levels in diabetic patients versus nondiabetic patients. Blood samples were collected from Driscoll and Shoreline Hospital labs in Corpus Christi, Texas. Sample collections are still ongoing at clinical sites. Peripheral blood smears were prepared from the unidentified patients’ blood samples and examined under the microscope for the number and kinds of cells present and other morphologic abnormalities. The collected blood samples were categorized based on HbA1c levels - group 1 (< 5.7% - nondiabetic); group 2 (5.7 - 6.4% - prediabetic); group 3 (>6.5% - diabetic) and by pediatric and adult groups. The pediatric control group indicated the highest number of ovalocytes (94%), anisocytosis (78%), and echinocytes (76%), the prediabetic group (80%, 90%, 60% respectively) and the diabetic group (83%, 83%, 67% respectively). The adult control group showed 53% ovalocytes, 58% anisocytosis, and 83% echinocytes, the prediabetic group showed 75%, 0%, 75% respectively, and the diabetic group showed 67%, 43%, 65% respectively. Surprisingly, the adults with the highest HbA1cs showed few morphological alterations. Overall, the numbers of anisocytosis, echinocytes, and ovalocytes in both pediatric and adult diabetic samples did not correlate with HbA1c levels, the observed few morphological changes may be attributable to the clinical care
