Cryptocurrency trading and downside risk
Since the debut of cryptocurrencies, particularly Bitcoin, in 2009, cryptocurrency trading has grown in popularity among investors. Relative to other conventional asset classes, cryptocurrencies exhibit high volatility and, consequently, downside risk. While the prospects of high returns are alluring for investors and speculators, the downside risks are important to consider and model. As a result, the profitability of crypto market operations depends on the predictability of price volatility. Predictive models that can successfully explain volatility help to reduce downside risk. In this paper, we investigate the value-at-risk (VaR) forecasts using a variety of volatility models, including conditional autoregressive VaR (CAViaR) and dynamic quantile range (DQR) models, as well as GARCH-type and generalized autoregressive score (GAS) models. We apply these models to five of some of the largest market capitalization cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Litecoin, and Steller, respectively). The forecasts are evaluated using various backtesting and model confidence set (MCS) techniques. To create the best VaR forecast model, a weighted aggregative technique is used.
The findings demonstrate that the quantile-based models using a weighted average method have the best ability to anticipate the negative risks of cryptocurrencies.This research received no external funding

SERS of human red blood cells in non-resonant conditions: Benefits, limitations, and complementary tools (CytoViva and GFAAS)
Herein, Raman and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopies (SERS) were successfully employed to establish the chemical interactions of citrate-capped silver nanoparticles (AgNPs, 10–15 nm) with human red blood cells (RBCs). The Raman/SERS spectra offered spectral evidence for the cellular uptake of AgNPs and the subsequent change in the conformation of the most abundant component, hemoglobin (Hb), from oxyhemoglobin to deoxyhemoglobin. The spectral characterization of AgNPs’ interactions with other RBC biomarkers (membrane proteins and lipids) was impeded by the dominant Hb bands, even for non resonant Hb conditions. CytoViva hyperspectral imaging and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (GFAAS) served as complementary tools to effectively address the challenges related to a single excitation line (632.8 nm) and the resolution of the confocal Raman microscope (0.5–1.0 µm). CytoViva confirmed the RBC-AgNP interactions through hyperspectral signatures and facilitated the label-free localization of AgNPs extracellularly and intracellularly. Irreversible agglutination of RBCs was noted after 24 h of exposure, raising concerns about the toxicity of AgNPs of biocompatible citrate coatings. GFAAS validated the Raman/SERS results by quantifying the proportion of AgNPs absorbed by RBCs, which was significant (~48% AgNPs by mass), mostly at the membrane (60% RBCs), and size dependent (no large AgNPs or AgNP-aggregates in RBCs, after 12–24 h).The USA National Science Foundation Awards #1438340 and #1726095 are highly acknowledged. Interventions to improve breastfeeding attitudes among college students
A Thesis Submitted In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS in CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY Department of Psychology from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.Breastfeeding is the optimal choice of nutrition for infants as there are numerous health, immunological, and psychological benefits that breastfeeding provides for both mothers and infants. The benefits of breastfeeding are known, however, there are individual and social factors that contribute to mothers feeling worried or nervous about breastfeeding in public; therefore, social support is a key component to mothers achieving their breastfeeding goals. Improving attitudes toward breastfeeding in general, and public breastfeeding in particular, may indirectly provide such social support, which would hopefully create a more welcoming society for breastfeeding mothers. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of brief interventions in improving attitudes toward breastfeeding among college students. Participants received an information-based, image-based, or information plus image-based breastfeeding intervention (or a control non-breastfeeding intervention). They then completed measures of their attitudes towards breastfeeding in general, attitudes toward breastfeeding in public, and breastfeeding knowledge. Results from this study show that the participants did not differ in their breastfeeding attitudes or knowledge following the interventions.PsychologyCollege of Liberal Art
