Incentivizing Self-Care Activities with Students in the TAMU-CC Nursing Program to Impact Self-Care Habits: A Quality Improvement Project

and mental health. With the fast-paced and demanding nature of the medical field, it can be incredibly
difficult for nurses to implement self-care tools that would help them deal with the challenges of their
jobs (Green & Kinchen, 2021; Lin et al., 2019; Sarazine et al., 2021). Despite a relationship between
fatigue and safety being recognized by The American Nurses Association (ANA) and The Joint
Commission, there is still a disconnect between the research and policies, workplace cultures, and nurse
preferences (Brown et al., 2020). Nursing is a caring profession which is taxing and requires that the
patient remain the priority. However, after the shift, the nurse needs to ensure that their own health needs
are met. After experiencing the intense and serious nature of the medical field, the nurse will often find
themselves drained and overwhelmed. This concept is called burnout and it is a serious issue that is the
result of overwork, stress, and generally the sapping of energy from the nurse (Green & Kinchen, 2021).
The World Health Organization (WHO) classified burnout as an occupational phenomenon that is the
result of unmanaged chronic workplace stress (2019). The WHO continues to expand upon burnout as
feelings of exhaustion, increased feelings of negativism or mental detachment from one’s job, and
reduced professional efficacy. Burnout can lead to a multitude of poor outcomes for the nurse and their
work like reduced job satisfaction, performance, quality of patient care, and increase things like sickness
rates and nurse turnover (Ameli et al., 2020; Anderson, 2020; Blackburn et al., 2020; Brown, 2020;
Ghawadra et al., 2019, 2020; Green & Kinchen, 2021; Kelly et al., 2021; Lin et al., 2019; Monroe et al.,
2021; Sarazine et al., 2021; Tolouian et al., 2022; Yilmazer et al., 2020). However, implementation of
concepts to increase well-being and reduce stressors that lead to burnout has been shown to be closely
associated with greater patient outcomes and reduced nurse turnover (Bogue, 2019; Parchment, 2022).
Nurses have an ever-expanding need for physical and mental support that should be addressed to prevent
burnout.The ethics of self-care and the discussion about how it relates to nurses has stretched far through
the history of nurses. The ANA made a notable addition to the Nursing Code of Ethics with the addition
of Provision 5 that states, “The nurse owes the same duties to self as to others, including the responsibility
to promote health and safety, preserve wholeness of character and integrity, maintain competence, and
continue personal and professional growth” (2015, Provision 5). The ANA related this provision to the
COVID-19 pandemic because it highlighted how important it is to take care of those that are providing
care during such an unprecedented event (2020). Fowler (2018) explored the discussion of ethics in
nursing that stretched through literature from the 1880’s up to the 2010’s. It was found that even in the
1880’s, nursing was thought to be encompassed by three core tenants of duty, being to the nurse themself,
the physician they work under, and the patient. Zolinerek (2022) continued this discussion through an
expert tip that punctuates the importance of self-care being a key aspect of the responsibility of the nurse.
An evidence table (see Appendix A), using current research and expert’s observations, was
constructed to address the PICO question: In nursing students from the Texas A&M University – Corpus
Christi (TAMU-CC) nursing program, will the implementation of incentivized self-care activities have an
impact on the frequency of self-care over the course of four weeks? The data from the table were
analyzed and synthesized, then the findings were used to inform the proposed quality improvement
project

This Microsoft® Excel® 365 text is developed to provide students with the basic skills on working with Excel 365. This book covers six chapters. Each chapter will be provided with the “Start File” and “Complete File”. The “Start File” will contain the data learners need to work with such chapter. Then, the learner will follow the demonstration in the slides/screenshot to learn the concepts covered in such chapter. Once the learner finish such chapter, the “Start File” will resemble the “Complete File.”
It is highly recommended that the learner practice with the project in each chapter 2-3 times. During the last practice, the learner should not need to consult the demonstration anymore. If the learner still need to look at the demonstration as a reference, it is an indication that additional practices are needed.

Fluorescent molecular rotors based on hinged anthracene carboxyimides
Temperature and viscosity are essential parameters in medicine, environmental science, smart materials, and biology. However, few fluorescent sensor publications mention the direct relationship between temperature and viscosity. Three anthracene carboxyimide-based fluorescent molecular rotors, 1DiAC·Cl, 2DiAC·Cl, and 9DiAC·Cl, were designed and synthesized. Their photophysical properties were studied in various solvents, such as N, N-dimethylacetamide, N, N-dimethylformamide, 1-propanol, ethanol, dimethyl sulfoxide, methanol, and water. Solvent polarizability resulted in a solvatochromism effect for all three rotors and their absorption and emission spectra were analyzed via the Lippert–Mataga equation and multilinear analysis using Kamlet–Taft and Catalán parameters. The rotors exhibited red-shifted absorption and emission bands in solution on account of differences in their torsion angle. The three rotors demonstrated strong fluorescence in a high-viscosity environment due to restricted intramolecular rotation. Investigations carried out under varying ratios of water to glycerol were explored to probe the viscosity-based changes in their optical properties. A good linear correlation between the logarithms of fluorescence intensity and solution viscosity for two rotors, namely 2DiAC·Cl and 9DiAC·Cl, was observed as the percentage of glycerol increased. Excellent exponential regression between the viscosity-related temperature and emission intensity was observed for all three investigated rotors.This research was funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC, No. 22050410272)

A Thesis Submitted In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE in Biology Department of Life Sciences from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.Due to climate change, mild winters and fewer extreme freeze events at the temperate-tropical transition zone are allowing some species to migrate poleward, causing shifts in species dominance. In coastal Texas and some other sections of the GOM, woody encroachment by mangrove shrubs and trees into low latitude salt marsh leads to reduced salt marsh dominance likely through competition for light. A recent catastrophic (i.e., mangrove-killing) freeze event in Texas influenced the present regime shift by causing extensive mortality of mature, sapling, and seedling mangroves, alleviating salt marsh vegetation from competition for light. A key topic for study is assessing rate and extent of mangrove recovery following the freeze as a crucial factor impacting the direction, timing, and extent of the regime shift. Additionally, anthropogenic fertilization is predicted to increase and enrich estuaries and bays, resulting in various consequences, such as increased mangrove colonization and dominance, adding another potential impetus to the regime shift. To better understand how nutrient enrichment affects recovery following a catastrophic freeze, fertilization plots were used in a field experiment to ascertain how nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) affect black mangrove survival and growth, as well as, changes in the salt marsh vegetation. Other observational sites, with different high and low nutrient conditions, were employed to identify how the findings from the fertilization experiment translate to a larger scale and expand the inference space of the study. Results indicate that nutrient enrichment increased above-ground growth and reproductive output of mangroves, thus enhancing population recovery. Salt marsh species (mainly Batis maritima) reduced growth of mangrove seedlings via inferred competition, although marsh plants did not respond to fertilizer treatments with enhanced above-ground growth. Rather salt marsh was influenced by elevation and shading by mangrove canopy. The findings suggest that nutrient enrichment alters wetland plant dynamics and accelerates a regime shift from a salt marsh to a mangrove-dominated ecosystem, depending on the frequency and magnitude of future freeze events that can reset succession.BiologyCollege of Scienc
