    Initial development and validation of the healthcare professionals' implicit bias checklist

    A dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in COUNSELOR EDUCATION from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in Corpus Christi, Texas.Implicit bias refers to prejudiced attitudes towards a social group or its members based on a subconscious association of these groups with stereotypes (Hagiwara et al., 2020; Sukhera et al., 2019). It is a source of inequitable care through biased mental health diagnoses, clinical treatment, and interactions between helping professionals and clients (Gopal et al., 2021; Hall et al., 2015). In contemporary days, there are two dominant assessments, including Evaluative Priming Task (EPT; Fazio et al., 1986) and Implicit Association Test (IAT; Greenwald et al., 1998), to measure implicit bias. Scholars challenged their psychometric properties and failure to attune to current societal trends and attitudes (Meissner et al., 2019; Schimmack, 2021). To address the gap, I proposed to develop the Healthcare Professionals’ Implicit Bias Checklist (HPIBC) with empirical support and contextual attunement to assess counselors’ implicit biases. I used the online community to collect a purposeful sample targeting counseling professionals and counselor trainees in the counseling profession. I conducted an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with a sample of 362 participants and a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with a sample of 200 participants. I check for reliability using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for internal consistency (? = .84). I also conducted a bivariate correlation analysis to show convergent validity between the HPIBC and Cultural Competence Self-Assessment Checklist (r = -.43, p < .001, medium to large effect size). The EFA produced a three-factor, 25-item, that accounts for 60.36% of the total variances after rotation. The CFA validated the three-factor structure of the instrument from the EFA. To this end, the HPIBC is a 25-item scale with sound psychometric properties to assess counseling professionals’ implicit biases about lifestyle beliefs, sex positivity beliefs, and gender identity beliefs. Though the HPIBC is a reliable and valid assessment for research and clinical purposes, additional studies need to be conducted to further evaluate its psychometric properties.Counseling & Educational PsychologyCollege of Education and Human Developmen

    Comparison of hydrological platforms in assessing rainfall-runoff behavior in a Mediterranean watershed of Northern Morocco

    This research evaluates the applicability of different types of hydrological models to simulate discharge behavior scenarios in a northern Moroccan watershed, Oued Laou watershed (OLW). In this context, an improved understanding of the runoff mechanisms through hydrological modeling of the OLW can assist in the hazard risk management and facilitate the effective planning of water resources. For that end, a multitude of hydrological models were used to perform a very efficient modelling, and a comparative approach was adopted. Comparison of the models allowed the determination of potential sources of uncertainty in hydrological modelling of a subhumid watershed. Three models (ATelier Hydrologique Spatialisé (ATHYS), Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS), and Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT)) with different characteristics were employed for a continuous modelling approach. The models were calibrated and validated using observed daily rainfall and streamflow data for 4 years (2004–2008) and 3 years (2009–2011), respectively. The multi criteria model comparison (R2 , NSE, RSR, and PBIAS) showed that all three models are capable of reproducing the observed flows. The SWAT model performed well over both periods (NSE = 0.76 for calibration), with an improvement in validation (NSE = 0.84). A good agreement was also observed in the HEC-HMS model outputs, with an approximately stable NSE of 0.77 and 0.78 for calibration and validation phases, respectively. The ATHYS model showed a NSE value of 0.67 during the calibration, with a decrease of 0.06 towards the validation period. The other performance criteria confirmed these findings. Additionally, results suggest that semi-distributed and conceptual hydrological models are particularly suitable for the OLW given their physical heterogeneity.     Module 18: Imagery Perry was on his way to visit his friend Garry who lives in a large apartment complex. Perry knew Garry's apartment number was 64, meaning the fourth unit of building 6. The buildings, however, were not arranged in a way that the numbering made sense. Perry had been to the complex before, so he knew he could rely on his long-term memory to find Garry's apartment without guessing which way to go. To do this, Perry closed his eyes and imagined the last time he visited Garry. In his mind, he could see himself turning right after entering the complex, then walking on the path between buildings 2 and 5. The path is lined with short bushes and there is a large crack in the sidewalk near the other side. Building 6 is across a section of grass. After imagining the last time Perry made this trip, he wondered how he was able to so clearly experience the visual aspects of the complex. Perry used mental imagery to do this. Mental imagery is the cognitive ability to intentionally experience sensory information that is not physically available. In Perry's example, he is using visual imagery from memory to navigate a familiar place. Mental imagery can also be used to "experience" perceptions you have not directly had (i.e., imagination). You've probably never been to the Moon, but given images, videos, and description you've encountered in the past, you might be able to reasonable imagine what it would be like. Mental imagery was already discussed by the early Greek philosophers. Socrates sketched a relationship between perception and imagery by assuming that visual sensory experience creates images in the human's mind, which are representations of the real world. Later on, Aristoteles stated that "thought is impossible without an image". At the beginning of the 18th century, Bishop Berkeley proposed another role of mental images—similar to the ideas of Socrates—in his theory of idealism. He assumed that our whole perception of the external world consists only of mental images. At the end of the 19th century, Wilhelm Wundt—the generally acknowledged founder of experimental psychology and cognitive psychology—called imagery, sensations, and feelings the basic elements of consciousness. Furthermore, he had the idea that the study of imagery supports the study of cognition, because thinking is often accompanied by images. This remark was taken up by some psychologists and gave rise to the imageless-thought debate, which discussed the same question Aristoteles already had asked: Is thought possible without imagery? In the early 20th century, when Behaviorism became the mainstream of psychology, Watson argued that there is no visible evidence of images in human brains and therefore, the study of imagery is worthless. This general attitude towards the value of research on imagery did not change until the birth of cognitive psychology in the 1950s and 60s. More recently, imagery has often been believed to play a very large, even pivotal, role in both memory (Yates, 1966; Paivio, 1986) and motivation (McMahon, 1973).     The voice from users of running applications: An analysis of online reviews using Leximancer

    This study aimed to examine users’ experiences of using running applications. A total of 20,243 online reviews posted by running-application users were collected from the Google Play Store. The data were analyzed using Leximancer to conduct the qualitative content analysis. The software identified six themes of running-app users’ experiences: “app”, “use”, “track”, “free”, “ads”, and “support”. Moreover, the results showed that users were generally positive toward the usefulness of running applications’ functions. The findings of this study help designers better understand running application users’ experience and improve running applications’ features in order to optimize users’ exercise experience.This work was supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF-2021S1A5C2A02089245)
